This is a futuristic novel with a very strong female lead, and a very surprising ending (which actually is the beginning). Chapel Ward is a ward of the state, and goes through less than legal channels to leave an overcrowded Earth as a mail order bride to a colonist. She's discovers she's a widow as soon as she arrives, and is held prisoner by a character reminiscent of an Irish gangster in early chicago. This was an incredibly unique read! I could not put it down. The author had me hooked right from the beginning. Chapel is a mail order bride except in this case she is sent to another planet. Once she is on the planet she finds that her husband has died and she is basically kept in hiding from the native population. There is a mystery here that she is determined to find out what it is.
