Genre: New Adult, College-age
Steam: Mild

Riley Middleton has given up a percussion scholarship out of state, made the choice to attend the local college while living at home, and pretty much singlehandedly runs the household. Riley's parents are filing for divorce. While her father is already engaged to another woman, her mother is an emotional mess. Missing the beat of the drums, as it has always provided her escape, Riley tries out for a local college band...more

"Love doesn’t always make sense. To the person in it or to the people around them. The falling can be an emotional, chaotic whirlwind. The landing jarring and eye opening. But if two people are really in love, there’s nothing in this world that can overcome it. Even if they can’t be together, love doesn’t cease.”

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? (~ ̄▽ ̄)ノ

'In The Band' is like a great mash-up of other books that I love: 'Easy' by Tammara Webber, Gayle Forman's 'Where She Went'. Finally, there's 'Five Flavors of Dumb' by Antony John. There's college dorms, hot and angsty guys, dysfunctional band dynamics, family and school financial problems, and a feisty female MC whose musical passion and talent drives the men who adore them into tortured despair. Lol!

So yes, while the plot is all too familiar, I still enjoyed this book. A LOT. It's a great YAR...more

I don't typically like super young adult novels. I prefer my books to have at least some sex. But, I was pleasantly surprised by loving this one, even with the lack of physical intimately. Instead there was more of a mental intimacy between the h and H. I'm a sucker for college setting romance, so that was also a huge plus. And, as much as I crave the drama and angst it was done in a way that didn't make me doubt the H, which is usually the case with romance angst. Once Romeo stopped being a jer...more

Loved loved loved this book!
It's no secret that I tend to gravitate to the books that have kick ass women and hot guys... Band members at that!
Riley is a great drummer, skate boards, dresses, acts, and shows no fear. She makes no apologizes to anyone. It's refreshing to have an author write a story about a strong woman and not have her be this homely lookin girl. And on the flip side she is forever loyal to her family and does anything to help them out.
Romeo Oh Romeo. And doing another 180, the...more

I expected this to be good, but really not that good. I simply loved it.

Riley and Romeo are fantastic together, so much chemistry and sexual tension around those two. Yeah, there are a few things about their personalities that annoyed me, but guess that just made them human and real. They're also young, especially Riley, so I can understand some of their ways even if I don't share them (Romeo's at the beginning, Riley's during the last quarter).

The rest of the characters are really good and fe...more

In the Band by Jean Haus

This is the first time I have read anything by Jean Haus and she is an amazing author, this book In the Band was fantastic. Jean writing is easy to read, the characters are great, and this is one of those books you don’t put down till you’re at the end.

In The Band is about a young woman named Riley Middleton who has to give up her dreams of going to college and playing in the school’s marching band. Her mother is struggling, her father has left for a much younger woman...more

GAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! In The Band was such an awesome, tear jerking, and humorous read. I laughed, I teared up, I even became fustrated with certain characters for their actions. This book is like Beautiful Disaster meets Love Evolution!!!

I loved the character development not to mention the character depth within the book. I mean the character weren't just outlined vaguely, the way they were written it was like you had a sense of their past and explanation as to why they were the way they were. Es...more

I love music, so I gravitate to stories about music and musicians. I think it's cool that Riley is a kick-ass drummer, instead of the typical singer or tambourine player. She loves her family enough to sacrifice her own dreams, but Riley also learns that giving up her identity isn't necessarily Going to help anyone. Justin Romeo aka Romeo, is contradictory to what his status as part of a successful band usually implies. His past experiences have molded this gorgeous , extremely bright, talented...more

Oh Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?
I just couldnt help myself. (snicker) But seriously, Romeo you are the man.
Love it when character does some self-reflection, grows in the process and in the end does the logic thing. Way to go Riley.
And Chloe rocked as a best friend. Ive really felt for her and her situation aka (view spoiler)[ unrequited love. Marcus, you idiot. (hide spoiler)] I think I can safely say many of us have been there and its not fun.
The heavy issues werent taken lightly. The...more

I began this book with mediocre expectations - "Good Girl" falls for the "Bad Boy."

That wasn't the case though.

ROMEO. OMG. I sound like one of his obsessive fans! I really hated him at first, because I really thought he was this horrible "Bad Boy." But then Romeo surprised me. It truly shocked me how things were the exact opposite of what the reader was led to believe.

Romeo and Riley are so effing adorable, so I strongly caution whoever reads this to be prepared. My heart melted along with bo...more

When I read the synopsis for this book, I just knew I had to read it. First off, I am the mother of a female drummer who is quickly learning the downside of being female in a male world. I so totally connected with the book through that aspect and loved it, however, that was not all that was great about this book.

My favorite character, even though I really connected with the female drummer Riley, was Romeo the guitar player from the band. What a complex c...more

This was an ok read for me. A couple things bothered me. While I really liked all the characters, I found it really hard to connect with Romeo and Riley as a couple. I just couldn't feel the sizzle between them. It had great potential but something just felt a little off to me. Romeo was an outstanding male lead character. He had all things female readers look for in a swoon-worthy book boyfriend! Riley was also a strong female lead, I liked her tomboyish behavior and spunky personality. She was...more

What can I say? This book was great; it turned supposedly simple family dilemma into a black hole sucking Riley in, controlling everything in her life: her character, her academics and her relationships. I myself can say quite honestly I am not sure whether I would have been as sacrificial as Riley. I would have found it extremely hard to give up an amazing university and a scholarship for a state university due to family problems. But then, I love my family to bits, so I would under extreme con...more

Drummer extraordinaire, Riley has just turned down a wonderful drumming scholarship in order to look after her family. Between her parents' nasty divorce and not being able to play the drums, Riley is lost and sad. Not to mention her mother's depression and how she has to pick up the slack at home with her little sister Jamie.

When her friend, Marcus, takes her to try out for a band, she fully expects to hate it. Instead she's impressed with their talent and she finds herself joining it. There's...more

Angry and resentful, she takes classes at the local university and agrees to try out for the local band, Luminescent Juliet. In the Band was a really great read that tackles a few hard issues as well as having a really lovely romance.

One thing I sometimes have a problem with when reading books that use some of life's most difficult issues as a storyline complication is how realistic they are portrayed (at least those I can say I have some experience with). In the Band, was really good at addressing issues like divorce/emotional adultery and depression in a real life, realistic way while showing the long-term light at...more

This book was freaking fantastic. I drew me in, kept me engaged, and left me thinking about it when I had to walk away from my kindle and engage in other activities (like work and feeding my children).

Riley was an amazingly developed character. She was a strong, take charge, confident, average girl. She didn't have amazing beauty and wasn't an unpopular freak. She was a band girl (I heart marching band girls having been one myself) who knew who she was and what she loved. Her relationship with h...more

Why is love such a cluster fuck?

This was an impulse buy. Amazon suggested it in an email, I clicked the link, read the blurb that included the words dark, sexy rock god and was sold. Those are dangerous words you know. Its so sad how easily persuaded I am. Seriously. I have issues. lol. Anyhow, I was very impressed with this book and enjoyed it very much. I initially thought this book was going to full of angst and drama, but I was wrong, well…at least on the angst part. The story turn...more

I just read a good book, In the Band by Jean Haus. How do I know? There are tell tell signs that all good books have and this book had it:
1. The book stays on your mind long after you have read the last page.
2. The characters are so well written that you find yourself sucked in to their lives. You feel what they feel.
3. The story moves along smoothly and when you get to the last page you are wishing that there were more pages because you don’t want to leave it just yet.
4. The problems that the c...more

I was so excited when Jean contacted me about reviewing this book! I had read Sleeping Handsome and Happily Ever After? and enjoyed both very much! This book did not disappoint either!

Best part of the book: Riley and Romeo are amazing characters! Riley is 18, just graduated high school and is ready to head to Virginia with her scholarship for marching band. She plays in the drumline and has amazing talent! However, it did not work out that way. Her parents end up breaking up and she has to go to...more

It's a huge honor to me when an author asks me to read their book before it's released to the public. So I have to say thanks to Jean Haus for sharing IN THE BAND. My friends know that I have a huge passion for music. One of my favorite things is going to concerts. So when a book tells a story about muscians I am instantly invested. Add the fact that Jean Haus tells the story of a female drummer and I'm seventeen again wishing I was that bad ass Watts from Some Kind of Wonderful.

Oh my, where do I begain?
This was one of those book that I couldn't put down and just have to keep reading it. By the time I finished it was close to 4AM in the morning. And when the book ended I felt like I need more! (If only there is another book of Remeo and Riley huh, one can only hope...)

In the Band a really sweet read. During her senior year, Riley's world collapsed. Her Dad left her Mom for someone else, her Mom is lost to depression, and her boyfriend broke up with her because he dihdn't want to do the long distance thing. To top it all off she gives up the percussion scholarship she earned to stay and take care of her family.

I like Riley. She feels betrayed by her father, she's angry at him and her mom. Her mom has checked out and Riley has to run the house and take care of...more

“Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you” (Gayle Forman, If I Stay)

This is a story about make choices. Riley chose to play drum when she bored with her piano lesson. It brought her to Virginia with percussion scholarship. But there is another choice that she has to choose, her mother and her sister need her. So she gave up her scholarship to choose her other choices.

Actually I chose this book just because its cover, it’s suitable for my reading challenge and I didn’t ex...more

When Jean Haus isn't writing, she's usually reading. Anything from young adult to historical fiction as long as there’s at least a bit of romance, she'll load it on her kindle. She also loves to cook. And someday she will create the world’s best potsticker.
