Hunger is wider than the world and more powerful than heaven. What would man not do in service to its terrifying glory?
Famished: The Farm is a world of horrific appetites, not far removed from our own. Men and women go about their days half-aware of an empty dissatisfaction with their lives, their world-a void of empty consumption-and a gnawing sense that there must be mo

My favorite quotes from the book:

"Scavengers. That's what we become in the end."

"The places you love do something to you, man. They make you big or small, but they make you, no way around it."

"The world would not see or did not care - he had nothing left to give but that crystalline liquid of emptiness."

"When he woke the darkness was once more on the world, but the full moon had taken the place of the weak winter sun, long and lean and dangerous as bone."

"There was pain, then, but not the pain o

Famished: The Farm isn't your normal book about flesh eaters. Enter the world of Gordon Velander, scion of a strong bloodline that escaped an unimaginable horror. Gordon has no idea this world even exists until he's tricked and kidnapped. He must then dig deeply within himself in order to not only escape but destroy the ghouls from expanding beyond the Farm.

It's become more difficult to find unique takes on monsters and myths. Many authors simply recycle old tropes and plug in a few newer

Ivan Ewert knows food, and knows how to write about it. The question is, however, what qualifies as food? "Famished: The Farm" leaves the reader anxious throughout the entire book. The feeling of uneasiness as each character unfolds and becomes familiar grows as the book progresses. But this "unease" is good - "Famished" is a horror book. Anything less than an anxious, uneasy, wrongly anticipatory feeling would be boring. Ewert somehow manages to leave his reader disgusted and horrified in the ...more

Great horror story. I enjoyed the pull between the characters. There is the ghoul who is just waking up to who/what he is. And the friction between the ghouls who live the old ways and the ghouls who want something more. There was a bit of misdirection in the plot and the ending was an action-packed blood bath.

My only negative comment is that it followed many vampire narratives that I have read before, so once the ending started I wasn't surprised. Still it was a great fast-paced read. People wh

I'm pretty squeamish about medical things but am no stranger to horror fiction. Still, I didn't expect to be so freaked out by this book that I fainted while reading it. On an airplane. Yeah, that was fun. Also a tribute to the visceral imagery Ewert brings the pages. Don't get me wrong; it wasn't needlessly gory or violent - but it was horrifying and very effective. I only made it to page 93 and decided to not go any further. At least for now. Some day when I'm feeling good and am in the ...more

My friend Ivan wrote this book. There is obviously something very wrong with Ivan that is not immediately evident.

The Farm is a wonderful piece of American Horror.

Gordon Verlander, the protagonist, is unknowingly descended from a group with very dark proclivities. Falling into the hands of the group, the Farm, his is faced with the past his ancestors fled from, and given terrible choices.

Tightly written and fast moving, it was a tense tale and very well-told.

At first I didn't think I would like this as much as I did, it's just not my preferred genre.
But once I got into the meat of the story, I couldn't put it down.

Still, I'll think twice about going to dinner at Ivan's house.

I was a bit disgusted, but found myself coming back to it and wondering how I was going to get to the end. It took some turns that surprised me and I find myself wanting the next book.
