"I've known Paul personally for many years and have faithfully followed his training advice with wonderful results. I can't recommend him highly enough." -Jeff Probst, host of Survivor

"This is basically a 'perfect book'....with this knowledge there should be many more well-adjusted canine companions and far fewer dogs being relinquished to shelters. This boo

This book has been so useful in the training of my siberian husky pup!! I've been trying to follow the training advice in here, especially the section on crate and potty training... and the methods are actually effective!! My pup is adjusting well to his crate and slowly learning to pee in the right places. The book emphasizes positive reinforcement and rewards to condition your puppy. The book is also structured well and they lead you through certain exercises step by step. An excellent gu...more

This is, in my experience, the best puppy training book available. It teaches people to be dog parents and not dog owners. There is an important difference.

Another best-selling author of dog training methods, who is aptly named after the dictators of ancient Rome, teaches people to dominate their dogs, to instill fear as a method of control. The history of animal-human relationships (and human-human relationships, for that matter) proves that control by dominance and fear is never e...more

A word to the wise: if you are planning on getting a puppy and want to invest in some research material, make sure you've completed your reading BEFORE the puppy arrives.

I made it through the first chapter of this book, which posed the question: "Are you ready for a puppy?" My answer was "yes", then 2 days later I had a 4 month old border collie mix pooping on the bathroom floor and eating my coffee table. The leisurely days of perusing a good book while sippin...more

I found this book very helpful. I have only browsed through one other puppy training book so I don't have much to compare this with, but I did like it better than the other one I browsed. All the information I've utilized in this book has been effective. I like the non-violent approach. The writing is clear and the instructions easy to follow. The book is well organized for easy referencing.

This method may work for some dogs, but not all. By characterizing people who ever punish their dogs for misbehaviour as uncivilized, Owens has encouraged lots of people to prefer to have completely untrained dogs.

what i learned from this book:
1. people that write these books are a tad crazy
2. puppies are pretty stupid.

overall this book was full of helpful information on raising a puppy and introducing him to the world.
