What do you do when the ex turns up unannounced after two years of silence? Well, this is exactly what Paul Vanderwall finds out the hard way. This book takes the reader on a journey of love lost and found again, of joy in finding the perfect partner but scared of history repeating itself.

Paul is a teacher and is called for jury service on a case of indecent exposure. There he meets the eyes of the defending attorney and to say that one look can speak a thousand words would be an understatement.

This was not a bad story, if you can get over the frustrating relationship that Paul and Javier experience, its hard to swallow and annoying. There are a lot of problems that need to be worked out between them. Not what I was expecting at all.

This novel is well written and moves right along keeping one enthralled. It is a story of love and the bonding of two people as they move into a deeper relationship. Paul Vanderwell is a teacher of gifted children in Los Angeles who had been abandoned by his former lover without a clue as to why. Javier Villalobo is an attorney who has no serious love interests. They are two men who desire a strong, loving, and lasting relationship. They are drawn to each other and move very slowly while getting ...more

Thank you Jeff for a wonderful story. I won't post spoilers so as not to ruin this for anyone else. I do want to tell you that if you enjoy a story that lets you get to know the characters (and sometimes relate to them), then this is a good read you will enjoy. Jeff introduces you to the principle players, then continues to reveal more and more about them. I truly liked the characters and was invested in turning the pages to find out what would happen next. This novel is about the relationship ...more

Mr. Ballam's debut novel may be considered part reality for those that read interviews on the author, but it is a romantic reality that readers can get lost in. From the way he introduces his two main characters to how Paul deals with the return of his ex Eric, Ballam keeps his readers grossly engaged in this freshman endeavor. Great job, Jeff!

Just couldn't connect with any of the characters or get used to the stiff writing.

I guess what they say about finding love when you least expect it is true.

Paul Vanderwall has spent the past two years picking up the pieces of his heart that was shattered when his then boyfriend, Eric, left him for no apparent reason. He has his friends and his work as a teacher in LA to keep him busy. No one is more surprised than Paul himself when he is called for jury duty and is instantly attracted to the tall, dark and handsome defense attorney. Paul is even more shocked when the trial

With his debut novel Out of the Past, Jeffrey Ballam successfully pulls his reader into the wreckage of his protagonist’s life and his slow assent to a chance at love. A teaching career spanning twenty-nine years and presently a teacher of language arts to sixth grade students, Ballam uses his experiences as a basis for this novel which proves to be a touching read.

For the past two years Paul Vanderwall has been slowly picking up the pieces of his broken heart after his lover left him with no

When love goes wrong, sometimes things get even more complicated. Such is the case when Paul loses his lover, Eric, and then falls for a dashing lawyer named Javier while on jury duty. Paul is reeling from Eric’s departure, something he can’t find closure from since Eric won’t speak to him. So it is with reluctance that he pursues a new relationship with Javier. But the works get gummed up with the trial on which Paul has been chosen for the jury and also by the sudden and unpleasant ...more

If you like romance, you'll love this novel. Ballam's forte is his attention to detail and description of his characters. I found his characters likable and almost perfect. I enjoyed the love scenes (another forte of Ballam) and felt like I was reading two different sides of a budding love story, like how most relationships are: romantic...and full of drama. There is a hint of intrigue and mystery, but I won't spoil it for you. If you want to sit down and cuddle with a book that is easy to read, ...more

This book was not what I was expecting, I did not like it half as much as I thought I would. It was not horrible but not my favourite either so I'm giving it 2.75. :)
