I am from Mt. Vernon, IL and this was/is a really big thing that happened in our community. Of course there were always rumors about everything you never really knew who was embelishing the truth. I really was very interested in knowing what happened or what drove hime to do this. I was just 6 years old when this happened but still it happened 6 blocks from my childhood home. Not only that but there was another brutal murder of a young nurse that happened I believe in 1987 not to far from the ...more

This book is fascinating. Mass murder is happening daily in America, and Family Mass Murders are also becoming commonplace. We all want to know why and more importantly, how to try to stop these horrible crimes before they occur. They've become part of our culture, sadly. I live in Mt. Vernon, not very far from where the Odle house used to be. It was a VERY interesting read, especially considering the fact that I come from here. I found some of the legalese difficult to understand in the book, and some of it was hard to understand because it was repetitive and kind of oddly worded at times. It was so weird though to read this book - I recognized some of the names mentioned...for instance, Sid Milliner has mowed my family's yard for years! I real

Repetitive and poorly written, it was interesting to have the contributions from the murderer but hard to know how much to believe from his story. He continued to blame things on his mother which demonstrates that he hasn't been able to accept his culpability, he very much comes across as a clever psychopath who has managed to seduce his psychiatrist by playing on the human longing for redemption. This projection from the author speaks more of his good moral standing than of the murderers change ...more

Shelves: true-crime, memoirs
Part psychology text, part true crime book and part memoir, this is a very interesting account of the murder of a family by one of the sons, the events leading up to the crime and its aftermath.
