I read this entire series all in one go and in a few hours so there's little distinction in my mind between one volume and the next. As such my individual ratings are more or less just approximations of the rise and fall of my affection for the series.

It started off entertaining if fairly typical and for the first few volumes it began to build very interesting relationship dynamics between Riiko and Soshi and Riiko and Night. But in the second half it descended into wishy-washiness w...moreI read this entire series all in one go and in a few hours so there's little distinction in my mind between one volume and the next. As such my individual ratings are more or less just approximations of the rise and fall of my affection for the series.

It started off entertaining if fairly typical and for the first few volumes it began to build very interesting relationship dynamics between Riiko and Soshi and Riiko and Night. But in the second half it descended into wishy-washiness when it seemed that not only could Riiko not make up her mind, but the writer (and thus the narrative) could not either.

The final decision is disappointing and a little disturbing given that the author doesn't do a good enough job at developing Night as an independent being. I mean, his free will is developed sort of, but only in the sense that he adheres slavishly to his programmed devotion to Riiko even when that's no longer what his company wants from him. All the same, he has no character or personality outside of her and being the perfect-in-every-way boyfriend that she ordered up. As such, her choosing him can't help but come off as her unwillingness to give up her easy, simplistic lover who literally can't do anything but be absolutely devoted to her for something prickly and real with Soshi. Especially since earlier Riiko even examines and considers her attachment to Night honestly and thinks about how she was so lonely and just wanted to feel special after always being rejected by boys, neglected by her parents, and generally having self-esteem issues. She apparently forgets that when she decides that she is in troo luv with him, but I don't know why the reader should be expected to do so.

Making the final choice even worse is the fact that the finality is completely removed from it. While there is a certain amount of verisimilitude in the idea that someone does not stay with their first boyfriend forever, after spending multiple chapters endlessly going on and on about their true, deep, eternal love, having Night "die" and Soshi come back to Riiko just feels like trying to have it both ways.

If Riiko and Night's "love" hadn't been so overplayed in the lead up to the end, it might have been less terrible. If Riiko had realized and acknowledged that she chose a simulacrum incapable of doing anything but loving her to the exclusion of all other things in its life because that appealed to her self-worth issues, it could even have been good. But as it is I like Soshi far too much to want him relegated to consolation prize.(less)

This is a review for the overall series. I give the overall series 5 stars! You know why? Because it was awesome!

The first thing I want to talk about is the ending. Oh, how tragic it was. Oh, how it made my sad. Oh, how it made me cry. Night is "dead". I wish he weren't dead. He just didn't deserve to die. So Riiko is a girl. She loved Night very much. He sadly died in the end and she kept kissing him to bring him back, but sadly, he didn't wake up... She was clumsy and very dense but is very kind and sweet and smart. Soushi is taking care of her now... She still loves Night though, even though he's dead. Riiko is a good character. I love her face and who cares if she is flat-chested.

Soushi was always in love with Riiko. But never had the guts to say it to her until she was taken. He still loves her and accepts that she loves Night. I felt sad when he was leaving for Spain but then he came back because Night asked him to take care of Riiko. AND THE NOTE! THE NOTE! That note he recieved from Night. T.T

There were many events in the story that made me laugh because they were so darn funny; like all those times when Night gets naked. There were many events that made me sad; like when Night died T.T . There were many events that made me go "Awwwwww! <3"; like all those times when Night said I love you to Riiko. There were many amazing events in the book. I still remember most of them in my head now.

The series was funny and witty and romantic and sweet and actiony and thirlling and just simply amazing. I don't think it coukd be any better than it already is. I had a great time reading it and hope that many other people will read it an enjoy it too. I recommend this manga to everyone, including boys. Who cares if it's a shojo manga?It was freaking great! So go out there and read this manga called "Absolute boyfriend".(less)

What a disturbing ending. I mean, really? She picks the robot? The ROBOT. Are we seriously not going to talk about the fact that he is a MACHINE? Meaning of course that he 1) Can't grow old with her 2) Can't ever have a normal relationship with her or her friends or her family (do they really think no one is going to notice that he can't age/eat/sleep?) and 3) HE CAN'T LOVE. Goodness, I am so in love with this cliche manga. :O
It's like everything seems good, but sheezus, Soushi moved to Spain.
I can't explain it in many words, but the way it ends is so pretty, and quite different than most of Yuu Watase's mangas. :)

Perfection can never really be attained, especially when it comes to love. Like Riiko finding her perfect boyfriend with a bit of a catch--he's not human! This is an enjoyable rom-com tale with a teeny touch of sci-fi plus an array of characters with interesting quirks--I am a Gaku Namikiri fangirl *waves flag*. It’s series finale time! While it wasn’t my favorite, I’m kind of bummed to see this series end. All that eye candy has come to a close. Nobody draws half naked pretty boys as well as Yuu Watase, and Absolute Boyfriend showcased her ability to render drool-worthy hunks. So what if the plot was ridiculous – it spoke to me! There are so many times that I wish I had a fantasy boyfriend, too. Real ones don’t do dishes or clean toilets.

ive read all the volumes but this one was the best even though it was bitter sweet. It made me cry and love it even more. Night finally loved Riiko in all ways possible but noblily sacreficed himself. Riiko now knows what it means to love and can finally love Soshi. And Soshi can finally get what he deserves.....I just loved this volume.....it still makes me want to cry*sob*

Great setup/premise, but she gives away too much early on, and it just sort of plods along the predictable path from there. Disappointing.

Aromatic.
Cute. About the right length. Sort of predictable, but not in so bothersome a way.

This review will be applicable to all the entire series. I loved this series so much. It was funny, romantic, and every girl's fantasy! Amazing artistry and storytelling. I didn't expect this series to have much plot behind it, but I must say it came along nicely. The ending is bittersweet and definitely reminiscent of Ayashi no Ceres. Wonderful!

I was rather surprised that the final episode of Absolute Boyfiend is actually only half a volume long, the rest being taken up with some rather interesting short stories based around the theme of love that unfortunately, are rather more enjoyable in my opinion than the conclusion to Watase's series. Despite the kick in the stomach the ultimate volume is, the pain that should have been felt was somewhat diminished by the rather fluffy two volumes proceeding that seemed to merely provide padding...more

This is one very good manga! The plot is extraordinary and has magnificent detail. Riiko is probably the best manga chracter I've ever read about, next to Usagi from Sailor Moon.

The strife between Night and Soshi is very intriguing.

What a rushed, unspectacular ending. If you're expecting any satisfying feeling of resolution, you're in for a major disappointment.

I also couldn't get over my dislike of Riiko, the main female character. I see little reason why any self-respecting bishonen would ever love her. Then again, I dislike most of Watase's main female characters in the majority of her works. Apparently, being annoying is a standard character trait for Watase's female protagonists.
