3.5 I love romance wrapped in suspense, danger and mystery. I was intrigued by the synopsis for Stacy Green’s novel Into the Dark and agreed to review it. Set in Las Vegas, we interact with the LA police, FBI and get inside the mind and lives of victim Emilie Davis and her serial stalker dubbed the “Taker”. From the streets to the tunnels of Las Vegas this tale kept me turning the pages.

The tale begins when branch manger Emilie Davis gets flowers without a card, as she takes them to the front lo...more

There is an attempted robbery at the bank and Joe, one of the robbers, is the mouthpiece. Emilie, the bank manager, is kept separate from the others by who will later be dubbed "the Taker". Nathan is the hostage negotiator. The Taker eventually escapes into the tunnels that were built under the bank years ago and continues to stalk Emilie.

Emilie doesn't feel safe and she doesn't have a lot of confidence that the police will be able to catch the Taker. She has not family for support and Nathan ar...more

They say you should start your novels with a bang, but author Stacy Green lulls her readers with quiet mystery for just the right number of heartbeats first, before setting a powerfully unsettling mix of human reverie and fast action racing across the pages. Emilie has flowers. Emilie has a secret admirer. Emilie has a gunman watching her… At which point, how can anyone resist reading on?

The dialog’s pitch perfect and the writing’s quick and smooth, drawing the reader into the heart of each char...more

Ok, I have to start by saying that I previously read the fic, so I had a few things to compare it to.

In general, the main plot is the same as the fic, however the book is a much cleaner version of it.

In terms of the suspense/mystery thing, it was good. Not too complicated and nothing jaw-dropping, but it was well done and entertaining. The book cleaned this topic from the fic version, so this was much better than that one.

However, I think two things could've been better in the book.

One was chara...more

Into the Dark was a phenomenal story of struggles that people incur in their lives and how they change as a result. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. The major characters are Nathan, Emilie and Julian. The characters are very well developed and the story line is amazing. It is amazing how Julian goes through life and becomes the person he has become. Quite sad. The way their characters become intertwined adds such dimension to the story making the experience quite memorable. Julian remi...more

Beware of Spoilers!

Into the Dark starts with Emilie receiving flowers and a special poem at work. She is unsure of what to do with them. The author gives it a sinister feel from the first page. Soon there is a bank robbery with hostages, but not all is as it seems. A negotiator is called in to help with the hostage situation. Emilie handles herself fairly well for the circumstances and gets a sense that one “robber” is more than he seems because of the way he...more

I'm a long-time reader of Stacy's Thriller Thursdays on her blog, where she shares true crime stories. This led me to expect good things from her first book, and I wasn't disappointed. Her enjoyment of true crime shows through in the realistic way she portrayed what it's like to live through a traumatic experience, as well as how a stalker might act and escalate. She clearly did her research when writing this book.

I don't want to give away the ending, but I thought she also did a good job of ho...more

Well written and skillfully crafted, Into the Dark centers around three main characters: a victim who can't accept her role, a killer pining over his lost love, and a hostage negotiator troubled by past failure.

These characters quickly come alive and keep gaining depth throughout the book. There are plenty of vivid minor players, as well. Stacy Green breathes life into her creations with only a few light strokes.

One might call Las Vegas the forth main character. We only get a few glimpses of the...more

What starts out as a bank robbery of the WestOne Bank quickly becomes one obsessed psychopath's attempt to kidnap thirty-four year old bank branch manager Emilie Davis, and take her down into the dark seedy underground tunnels of Las Vegas' storm drain system that lies beneath the city. With the SWAT team closing in, the "Taker" aborts the attempted abduction and escapes into the 200 mile labyrinth to regroup. I enjoyed this book from start to finish. The characters were well developed. Emilie is a strong female character who needs someone to lean on but when she doesn't the answers she wants she goes looking for them herself. She's had a lot of obstacles in her life but she keep fighting through them. Nathan, the hostage negotiator, is a good guy trying to deal to deal with the guilt brought on by the death of his uncle. The two are perfectly paired for each other and things begin to heat up as the...more

Let me start of by saying I know this story was once a FanFiction fic called The Hostage.
I was a huge fan of that story but sadly it was never completed before the author removed it.
When I heard the other day that it was now a book I could not log into Amazon quick enough to buy it as I LOVED that story.

For those that don't read story's that were once a fic this story has been edited, a lot.

Into The Dark still has the same plot, a bank robbery that has one of the robbers singling out th...more

Emilie is a bank manager of the local bank when it's robbed and everybody inside is held hostage. If that isn't bad enough she realizes its not the money the robber is interested in but her. Her fate rests in the hands of negotiator Nathan to get Emilie out safe and away from a crazed stalker.

I enjoyed this read very much, it's realistic feel had me drawn into the story from the 1st page. You can tell when an author does a lot of research into a topic and this was the case with 'into the dark' t...more

A good angler lures a fish in and captures its attention, then hooks it and the battle begins.
An excellent angler lures a fish in, captures its attention, and doesn't even let the poor fish know it's been hooked.

Stacy Green's first novel, Into the Dark, reminded me of that excellent angler. I didn't realize I'd been hooked by the writer until long after she'd won the battle! Let's run down the list of what I like to see in a novel ... engaging and likable characters? CHECK An appropriate balance...more

Talk about an edge of your seat thrill ride! This book was FUN and at points legit TENSE! I loved how everything seems random at the start, it's just a normal bank robbery right? WRONG! You quickly begin to realize that nothing is as it seems, and Emilie is probably in more danger than first expected.

I definitely am glad that the romance wasn't super heavy. I think that overdoing it on the LURVE would have killed what suspense and tension Stacy Green had built up. Don't get me wrong I liked this...more

This book goes into the category of "couldn't put it down". I found myself carrying my Kindle around while I was getting ready in the mornings, and that always means I'm loving a book. I liked the characters a lot. Emilie did something I thought was stupid, but isn't that what we do in real life sometimes? It made her seem more real to me. The characters had good traits and bad traits just like people in real life. I found myself caring about what happened to them, so the author did a good job w...more

What a brilliant well written book. The plot left me wanting more and on the end I couldn't put this down. Such a suspenseful book and a thriller of a journey. There were enough characters and were well descripted that it didn't get confusing. I would love to see more novels written by this author. Well done!

I won this won in a contest or a giveaway somewhere- it's driving me but that I can't figure out where I got it!

I thought that the policework demonstrated here was inaccurate and very slipshod. I found the actions of the police and FBI to be so unbelievable that it ruined my enjoyment of the book.

I was also annoyed that after Emilie went home after the original kidnapping attempt, and after the police warned her that The Taker might be coming after he again, she blithely went home and went righ...more

Into the Dark is a book that is scary for any woman...to be stalked. What starts out as a bank robbery in progress turns out to be a story about Emilie, a bank manager, who happens to be working the day the bank is robbed and ends up being the victim of a deranged man. This is no ordinary robbery as one of the men robbing the bank has a fixation for Emilie. Unknown to her this person who becomes known as The Taker" knows everything about her and leaves her flowers and notes. A botched kidnapping...more

I love a good psychological thriller and this was one that kept me wanting to read more! "The Taker" is after his prize which happens to be Bank Manager, Emilie Davis. He has come to claim her and gets his chance when he is a participant in a bank robbery. It doesn't take Emilie long to figure out he is more interested in her than in getting money. Something goes wrong and he escapes without her...this time. What follows is a frightening tale of stalking, kidnapping, and more.

This is a book I c...more

This suspense novel deserves all 5 stars - - Stacy Green did a superb job of building the apprehension. I was very impressed by how smoothly the story flowed. The author did a remarkable job of resolving the conflict to my satisfaction. Every character is well developed with astonishingly in-depth backgrounds. The authors writing style was remarkable; variety of pace, realistic dialogue, but most notable was the very vivid descriptions.

If you like suspense, this is great novel to spend a weeken...more

I was really impressed by how well written this mystery was, I felt like I was reading one of the real crime novels I love to read. The author described Las Vegas so adeptly that I almost felt like I was right there, smells and all. You can tell that the author truly enjoys writing this genre and really does her research to give it that real feel. The story builds at a great pace starting with a bank robbery that quickly escalates in a psychopath named The Taker becoming obsessed with the storie...more

Okay - I'm editing my pre-review of this book.
Jami Gold, an author who has previously spoken out publicly against P2P, has interviewed Stacy Green on her blog (http://jamigold.com/2012/12/fan-ficti...) and brought up a few interesting points.

Turnitin apparently declares that the former fanfic The Hostage is 99% different from the published novel Into The Dark. I tend to believe Turnitin.

The author claims that she took the premise from the fanfic and wrote an entirely new story, with different...more

I loved this! First, it's set in a place that doesn't get featured often and one that happens to be where I was born: Las Vegas. Second, it features the tunnels, where people who have nowhere else to go make their homes with cast offs inside the drains. They live like rats down there. It's fascinating to me that 1. they choose to do this, and 2. it's allowed to continue. So just having a look inside those tunnels was fascinating, not to mention the story itself. Emilie has a stalker. He's in del...more

The concept was sound. However, despite its promising premise, I felt the execution was lacking.

Into the Dark is described as a suspense novel with a dash of romance. Unfortunately, the dull—albeit somewhat forbidden—romance didn’t work for me. It didn’t make sense. There was no build-up and the lack of chemistry didn’t exactly help either. Honestly, I couldn’t have cared less about Emilie and Nathan as a couple.

Also, there were a few inconsistencies. Emilie’s ex-husband’s name is Evan Randall....more

I had to lower my grade because at the time had no idea this was former twilight fan fiction.

This used to be a Twilight fanfic called The Hostage by EBAlways.

I hate being fooled this way.

For her debut novel, Stacy did a great job of keeping the suspense rolling. Most of the books I have read lately have been more drama with maybe a bit of romance thrown in. I do love suspense because if it's done correctly I can't put the book down. In this case, Stacy succeeded with me.

Stacy had done her research for the setting which made it very believable. Her characters seem realistic as well. While I didn't have as much time to sit down and read every night as I would have liked, I manage...more
