Bias alert - Ms. Owens-Lalude has just walked in the door here at North Sarasota Library in preparation for speaking tomorrow afternoon with our young people. She'll be addressing a meeting of the local chapter of ASALAH here at the library in the morning.

She's an extremely charming storyteller and mom and friend of my friends. I love the story of this book and the use of actual family names from the author's history. I love that she decided to write after years of telling stories to her sons.

Moving story based on the author's great-grandfather who escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad. George Henry was a young boy when he and his mother, Clarisa, were brought to Louisville, KY, and sold to a plantation owner who lived in Spencer County.

A very personal, compelling story of slavery and the desire to be free at any cost. Set in Kentucky - illustrating KY's role as a borderline slave state and major artery along the Underground Railroad. Judith join the Zora's on the nite we discussed the book. She added many details that made the story even more interesting and important.

Uplifting and rich story of American slavery. Violence is modest ad kindness of fellow slaves is highlighted. Might work for older children.

Liked the quilt/map motif and the pictures of slave life Cruelty of owners is clear but not too violently drawn.
