I purchased this book as soon as it was released and was excited to read it. Great story line but....what a letdown. First, totally unrealistic start - I understand that fiction is just that - not real - but for me a story needs to be at least a little believable. Second, the writing felt odd. Some parts were just so descriptive (how she is getting ready to go out for a date) and then others that were more significant to the book were too fast. It felt that if the characters were in their teens, it may have been more realistic.... The main character, Marcus, is about 29 and has never, ever dated. Really? Come on......and he meets Mia at a bar (she is very drunk) and immediately knows that she is the one that he wants to finally "date". He asks her to date him after telling her he has never dated. Just odd. Marcus tells Mia a few days into the relationship "Thank you for coming and giving me a chance. You don’t know how much it means to me that you were willing to do this." Do what!!!! Date a devastatingly handsome, rich, well known attorney that was warm and kind...... The book also went way to fast - if the author would have spent some time building the relationship and or attraction between the two characters, among other things, I probably could have enjoyed the book more. Again, the premise of the story is good - romance, drama, some mystery - etc. but again, the way the characters get together is just so unbelievable. You can easily figure out in the very first part of the book what the big secret is. I am pretty sure the author did not intentionally put it out there - it was just very simple to figure it out based upon the writing. Would have been nice to build that up a little more too vs. letting it all out in the open right away. Finally, to reiterate, I felt this book was very rushed - if the author would have taken a little more time to develop the characters and the story, I think I could have really enjoyed it because the storyline had potential.(less)

I have a serious love/hate relationship with Disastrous. I saw that a lot of my friends enjoyed this one, so I decided to give it a go and it just was not working for me... at first.

The beginning of this book was a struggle for me. The writing felt a bit choppy, the dialogue didn't flow for me and the relationship just seemed so unrealistic. Marcus meets Mia while she's totally wasted and somehow, based upon that one sloppy drunken interaction, he decides that she is the one girl that he wants to try dating (he's 29 but has never dated before) because she deserves to be treated like a woman. They go out on one date, they've probably only spent a handful of hours together, and in no time they're jetting off to his house in the Bahamas... I just didn't feel a connection to their relationship. I have no problem with love at first sight or where two characters just have an instant connection, but I just didn't feel it between these two.

I felt like I didn't have the opportunity to become invested in the relationship. I wasn't connected to the characters at all. I felt indifferent about whether they were together or not. I was actually more interested in Mia's friendship with her roommate. There were in depth descriptions of Mia's shower and her nightly routine but every opportunity that the reader would have to get to know these characters and become invested in their relationship felt a bit rushed. I just really wanted more. I wanted to feel that feeling when you are dying for these two characters to be together because you are just so connected to them and invested in their story. I just wasn't feeling it :(

BUT, I don't give up easily. I figured it was probably my mood and I just needed to give it a day. The book has a killer prologue though and as much as I wanted to take a break, as soon as I put it down I couldn't stop thinking about it and what was going to happen.

I wound up picking it back up within a few hours and then I couldn't stop! Once I got almost halfway through, it really picked up and then I didn't want to put it down! I can't say I really grew to like Mia, but I somehow got completely attached to Marcus. I LOVED him.

I really did have a hard time getting through the beginning of Disastrous, but I think if you can get past the beginning (and it might've just been my mood) it's definitely a great read and really enjoyable. I'm really glad I pushed through it because I wound up really enjoying it! I will definitely be reading the next book! I had to throw that extra half a star up there because even though I felt really frustrated with the beginning, I wound up really enjoying the rest of the story and couldn't put it down! I'm excited for more Marcus DeLuca ;)

This book has totally manipulated me into giving it another star...

That is how you do a prologue my friends! A hook? Try thousands of tiny hands shooting out from between the pages and grabbing every single part of my body. I was vibrating with anticipation! However, what came next is why I almost...I did...but then I didn't...I did again...but changed my mind...and almost gave it 3-stars.

Disastrous is one of those books that was a good, decent read but not anything amazing, blow my socks off book. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the book a lot. Disastrous is one of those books that was a good, decent read but not anything amazing, blow my socks off book. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the book a lot. I am glad I read it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys an easy, romance novel. The book reminded me a lot of the series Untouchable by Lindsay Delagair; a hot romance with a lot of passion and the male lead being involved with the mob.

The storyline is simple, a pretty young girl falling in love VERY quickly with a rich, young, attractive attorney who also happens to be in the mob. The characters fall so quickly, they go away to the Bahamas’ days after meeting each other and are boyfriend/girlfriend within two weeks and saying I love you before you even know it. I don’t tend to like reading novels with characters falling so quickly in love with each other because I find it unrealistic. I felt this way between the characters Marcus and Mia. I just couldn’t feel their passion besides sex between the two.

Marcus kind of gave me the creeps being so into Mia so quickly and wanting his first “relationship” with her after just meeting her. Mia bugged me even more… she was supposed to be a super smart Harvard Law student but her personality and dialogue seemed more like a co-ed. I couldn’t get into either of them very much. The character I did enjoy was pushed to the side about 50% into the book. Jeremy was Mia’s best friend and also her friends with benefits “friend”. I thought he was hilarious and I really wanted some type of love triangle to happen between Mia, Marcus, and Jeremy. I was disappointed Jeremy just kind of was taken out of the picture.

I still enjoyed the book and the writing. Though I could not get into the romance or characters of the book I was still interested in what will happen and wanted to know the ending. This will be a series and I will read the second book, I think there are a lot of loose ends that will hopefully be addressed in the next book. I hope the characters develop more and mature into a healthy adult relationship. I hope Jeremy comes back into the book as well.

I give Disastrous 3 stars.(less)

Being a debut novel, I was skeptical at first when I picked up Disastrous by E.L. Montes. I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that as a first attempt, it could either be good or very bad. I would probably recommend this book to those who may have just finished Fifty Shades or Bared to You and are suffering from withdrawal symptoms. I understand that many people enjoyed Disastrous and I can see why but for some reason this one did not do anything for me.

I would probably recommend this book to those who may have just finished Fifty Shades or Bared to You and are suffering from withdrawal symptoms. I understand that many people enjoyed Disastrous and I can see why but for some reason this one did not do anything for me.

First, I may have some major issues with how this story started. To me it all seemed to happen way too fast. (view spoiler) Maybe this is just me growing out of this type of bad boy meets good girl and immediately falls in love right then and there, type of book. Or maybe it would have been fine if it just took them a tad bit longer to get to that level.

Mia’s relationship with Jeremy was another feature I could not get over. I don’t want to get into it, but again, it just seemed like another very unrealistic rapport they had going on.

On the writing, it felt so descriptive at times that I kept skipping over the details time and time again. I’m usually one to appreciate this kind of writing, but I honestly did not need to know that Marcus was cooking the chicken at a medium fire instead of at a higher setting. But maybe that’s just me.

The story got interesting towards the end and it grabbed my attention for a few pages but unfortunately I don’t think the cliffhanger was enough to make me want to read the next installment.

I hope I’m not offending anyone who enjoyed this story. I understand why people would. I guess it’s just a matter of personal taste. I tried to love it. I really did. But I was completely disconnected with the characters and found it hard to care for them even towards the end when I was starting to understand them a little better.

2 stars for a story that had potential but failed to keep my interest for most of it.(less)

Don't get me wrong - I did like it. I liked Mia even though she turns from this strong female character into a sad pathetic girl and generally contradicts everything she tells us about herself.
My main problem with her was - I know she's in love (as unreasonable as it may be) but (view spoiler)

Marcus is the weakest, saddest hero I have read in quite a while. For the duration of ~320 pages he is constantly whining, crying, self-pitying, apologizing, wallowing, and just generally being pathetic. Wasn't he supposed to be a capable, strong man? Certainly, with his way of life I expected a lot more backbone from him, a little more control of his feelings - and temper! Again, don't get me wrong, I understood his "situation". I ended up warming up to him but in the end I still wasn't fully convinced. While I don't mind a little bit of man-crying, after a while whenever he would cry or do the whole self-pitying thing I was rolling my eyes.

There is a plot twist you wouldn't expect. I didn't see it coming and I thought it was great and it actually made sense.

Writing wise, I'd say it was okay. Of course, it could have used some more editing, but I didn't mind so much. What I did mind was the way author just sort of told us what happened - like a recap every once in a while, instead of showing us. There was a part where Mia says that they got to know each other better (something about talking about movies, foods, hobbies, making fun of each other, sneaking a pizza into her room, etc) and I felt cheated because we didn't get to see it, she just told us about it.
Another thing I really disliked was the "mmmmh" - it's used 11 times in both dialogue and narrative, and from all three characters' POV.

I just wish the majority of the book was as the last quarter, (view spoiler). I will read the sequel, because I want to know what happens next, though.(less)

I love this indie author already and this is only her first book! Not only is she amazingly talented and has written an extraordinary book, she is also so kind to all of her fans! Disastrous was a definite page turner and it leaves you satisfied in the end but wanting oh so much more. Mia Sullivan is in her first year of Harvard Law School and maintains a 4.0 G.P.A. During the last class of the year, she is surprised by one of her professors who submitted her name for a extern position at one the most prestigious law firms in Boston. These positions are highly coveted and only for incoming 3rd year law students, so Mia is very lucky to have this opportunity to interview.

Her roommate, Jeremy is also selected to apply for an interview and decides that they should go out and celebrate their good fortune. While there Jeremy is on the prowl and leaves Mia sitting and drinking alone at a table. However, Mia has caught the eye of Marcus DeLuca owner of the club and just so happens to be the owner of the law firm that she will be interviewing for.

From there starts a starcrossed love story that will at times have you shouting for joy and pulling the hair out of your head. It's a whirlwind romance with Mia throwing basic dating conventions out the window and hightailing it out of town to Marcus' home in the Bahamas. He's already promised her the job, so the interview process is one that would give the casting couch in Hollywood a blush.

However, Marcus' deep dark secrets start coming through and Mia wonders just who did she get involved with. She sees Marcus with seedy people, she's researched him and found out that his law firm happens to represent the top mafia person in Boston and she's afraid that he might be more involved in that business then he originally lets on.

Montes keeps the reader engaged with a fast-paced story that keeps you guessing where she could be going with this. Mia is vulnerable, no mother, her father and brother killed in action (both were cops), so her psychological relationship with Marcus is tormented. The physical need between the two them is fully explored, but Mia knows that before she gets in deeper, she needs to get out. Soon.

The story manages to weave in Mia's past and her present with Marcus' life and the two are intertwined in a way that Mia may never forgive him ever.

A solid debut and I'm looking forward to the sequel in 2013!

Mia Sullivan and Marcus Deluca are two starcrossed lovers. It's up and down. When it's up, it's very very up, when it's not it's disastrous. What a wonderful story and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book.

I know, I know I bet you thinking “huh, you only rated it two stars?” Yeh, my rating sucks! Even after all the good ratings you’ve all seen about this book but for me, Disastrous was a disastrous read and no matter how much I tried, I just didn’t enjoy it.

As Mia and Marcus takes steps towards a relationship, Mia realises that Marcus is hiding secrets that could destroy their relationship and could also destroy Marcus’s professional life as a top lawyer. Can they overcome Marcus’s problems or will it destroy their love?

I can see I’m in not with the minority who enjoyed this book – which surprises me because most of my Goodreads buddies loved it and generally, we usually have the same taste but again, this just proves that not every book is for everyone. Now I have to admit, I did really started to like the book to start with, but the more I read, the more I lost interest, and the more I lost interest, the more I started to pick apart the characters and then started to hate them. I kept reading though hoping they would redeem themselves or change but if anything, I felt things just spiralled more out of control and they never did really redeem themselves.

Mia, I found was a hard character to like. I felt for her situation losing the people that she loved but she’s a very rash person – one that overreacts to the smallest thing and I found myself rolling my eyes at her more than once. Not only that but she changes her mind far too quickly for my liking. One minute she was happy and glad she’d found Marcus, and within a few pages, she was sad and wishing she could forget about him. Now, I know that’s Mia’s prerogative to change her mind but where I thought the author was trying to show us Mia was indecisive because of how Marcus’s presence affects her, then if I’m right, I think the author failed to deliver it because, if anything, Mia just came across annoying in my opinion. I just wanted her to stick with one feeling or thought and follow through on it.

Now Marcus, as a male lead, didn’t appeal to me the more I got to know him. He came across as a broody, alpha male guy but the more the story went on, the weaker he became. I’ve lost count how many times he said the words “Sorry” or “Please” – I felt as though he was just begging Mia all the way through the book. He has two sides of him, the professional lawyer by day and the mafia helper by night. Both which did not fit his character and he was too weak to be either of them. His feelings for Mia just seemed over the top – he fell head over heels in love with her and I just don’t think it worked well within the story.

The story itself was too overdone. I didn’t believe the characters reactions to things nor did I believe the general story line. The relationship between Mia and Marcus went far too fast and the author told us several times what the characters did rather than showing us. One of the most important scenes for me was when Mia and Marcus went away at the start of the book, but we only see a glimpse into the start of their relationship, and I felt if the author had showed us how their love developed rather than told it, it would have been more believable.

All in all, I was hoping Disastrous was going to be fantastic but in all, I was disappointed. However because of how many people loved this book, I’d still recommend you read it and try it for yourself. (less)

4.5 Stars for E.L. Montes debut novel

I absolutely devoured Disastrous.... I want this book to be a movie one day... such a fantastic read which has all my favorite elements in a book.... drama, angst, love, steaminess, twists and turns ...all around a great story.. truly felt like a rollercoaster of a ride whilst reading this one.

Disastrous is about the story of Mia and Marcus.

What I really liked about Disastrous was its mix of romance and mystery. This story went beyond a rich man falling for a woman and sweeping her off her feet; it added complexity with two damaged characters, the ever-present mob and secrets that, if they came out, could have serious repercussions. Shelves: favorites, will-read-again

Disastrous was a roller coaster ride for me. And I LOVED every minute of it! The prologue had me hooked for the minute I started reading. Who was this girl? Why were her emotions so high? I had to find out!

I stayed up all night reading Disastrous. I would say to myself, just one more chapter and I will go to bed. But then I would get the end of the chapter and HAD to know what would happen next! The beginning was a little ehh for me. The writing just felt a little forced (like convos between the characters). Who the heck asks a girl they just met to go to the Bahamas the second time they meet?
More importantly, what woman in their right mind would say yes?! Sure, Mr. DeLuca is one fine piece of eye candy but who's to say his charming smile isn't just a tool to lure in women so he can chop them up into little pieces.

Wow! I could not put this book down! Every single page from beginning to end is captivating! The characters are perfect especially Marcus! He is so Sexy Sexy Sexy in every way possible! Thank you to the author for giving us a Bonus at the end of the book with Marcus's point of view! That was the icing on the cake! Can't wait for the next book! I miss Marcus already!! Wish I hadn't finished it so quick :( Awesome Book!!

It will never be disastrous for me. Nothing is perfect but for me it is! I definitely enjoyed riding with the emotional roller coaster and all. It..it was...intense! So, yeah, I truly recommend this and why can't I freaking wait for the sequel! Am gonna go crazy-crazy waiting! Waaaa!

An interesting story, but something seemed off about it. Not sure if it was the writing style that I maybe was a little different? Lots of love, sex and drama and you couldn't help but love the characters, but I hated the way Mia and Marcus fought like teenagers, when clearly their problems were a lot bigger. Drama, break up, sex, make up, drama, break up, sex, make up...that got redundant. This was a great story and if the writing could be tweaked, the next story could be awesome!

I hadn't read this because I'd heard there was a cliffhanger ending, then I heard there wasn't. I decided to read it and find out for myself, and it doesn't end in a cliff, but oh, it sure does leave you wanting more!!

I really really enjoyed this book. It has everything that I love. I cannot wait for book 2! I'm pretty sure you'll be adding Marcus to your list of BBFs! ;)
