Czech Mate

Tom Immins

Czech Mate, by author, Tim Immins, starts out with a hook that immediately grabs the reader. It's impossible not to move forward in this incredible book after reading the opening prologue. The story takes place in Gideon; two pubs, a post office and a shop that sells everything the villagers could possibly need. Yet, the idyllic village of Gideon, like many small towns, holds its secrets . . . until the murders.

I picked this up on a free day from one of the daily kindle deals. I'm not really sure what attracted me to it in the first place. After re-reading the synopsis, it is not the type of book I usually read, but I thought I would give it a try.

I was not hooked by the opening. It read as pretty formulaic - here's a town, there are some murders, find the killer. It almost reads as a regurgitation of events similar to a crime serial tv show. I wanted to know more about the characters and their feeling

Long, rambling tale to nowhere

Immins feels the need to give a full backstory on every character you meet. It got so bad, I forgot what the original story was about. There's also a story within the story that has nothing to do with the title story. I'm really not sure what Immins was trying to accomplish here. I won't be reading more.

I am an avid sports fan and life long supporter of Arsenal Football club. When I have the time to keep fit, I like to swim and do the occasional run. I also, when the mood takes me like to try and play the guitar, four ...more
