What's the market price on a decent guy these days?

Maggie Beaumont's luck is about to change. Sure, she's known for her bad romantic choices—her former boyfriend broke up with her by bringing his new girlfriend home for a visit. And then there was the crush she had on a gorgeous young Irishman, who turned out to be Father Tim, the parish's new priest.

But romantic salvation...more

I read this book via Audio, by Xe Sands. A true gift of the writer is being able to take me away from the world I am and plant me smack in the center of the written one. By the time I finished--I wanted to visit this fictional town in Maine and go the Diner the Heroine owned.

Maggie is owner and operator of Joe's Diner in a small fishing town in Maine. In her thirties she is still not married and it doesn't look like she has any future when there is very little to choose from. To make matters wor...more

Originally reviewed here.

Quite honestly, life is abundantly busy these days. And while my reading hasn't slowed down, I tend to hibernate with an old favorite when real life gets real. So I may have been forgoing some of the new stuff in favor of doing a little re-reading a la Megan Whalen Turner these days. I also made time to re-read one of my favorite Kristan Higgins books on account of it being repackaged and re-released this week in a glossy new edition to match her others. CATCH OF THE DAY...more

Good, but I just couldn't connect with the first person narrator, who was alternately annoyingly doormat/saint-like and annoyingly neurotic/overanalytical. Also, Malone is too much of a strong-but-silent type for the first person POV to work here in that, for the romance-factor and the "how does he feel about her" way, we were left totally blind. We really have almost no clue how he feels because we're so cemented into the first person POV and all of the (mis)interpretations that accompany that...more

Catch of the Day is a sweet story that really tugged at the old heart strings. I felt for this woman. Maggie is in her early thirties, and she owns a very small town diner in Maine that has been in her family since her grandfather opened it. She is very proud of it, and pours her soul into it. She’s been single for about ten years, since her boyfriend dumped her publicly by showing up with a new woman when she didn’t even know they’d broken up. Her twin sister has the life she envies—a doctor hu...more

This is the seconds book by Kristan Higgins that I’ve have read, and it was recommended to me by my friend Nikki. I am very thankful that it was. In this book you meet Maggie a heroine with a heart of gold. I loved Maggie for all her quirks and found it so refreshing that instead of shying away from or becoming bitter about her love life being kind of a town joke and she could face it head on and laugh at herself. I loved her sister Christie and thought the bond between then was great. I loved t...more

So I am reading the Smart Bitches website a week ago and they had posted the winners of the various RITA awards that were handed out during the RWA conference.

This book won the 2008 Rita for Best Contemporary single title. I am always on the lookout for a good contemporary book and the blurb for this sounded hysterical. So I ran over to my local library and picked it up.

I devoured this book in one sitting. It was sweet, funny as hell and totally romantic. I am a total Kristan Higgins convert.

Three stars for Malone.

My disclaimer - I really don't like this genre at all, so take my review with a grain of salt. But it was done really well, in that the characters were nicely fleshed out, and some of the comic scenes were actually very funny.

But, I cannot stand this kind of hapless heroine in ANY genre, the nervous babbling and gossiping and running off her mouth like a teenager. She was petty, passive aggressive, inappropriate, and just all around totally immature. It was hard to pictu...more

Kristan Higgins amazes me yet again: I read this cover to cover in one sitting. Maggie and Malone make a very...interesting match. Sometimes I kinda felt sorry for Malone, Maggie has one big personality! I really love the way he handled her.

And really, its about time Maggie falls for him instead of being a lovesick idiot over a priest! The dude was a major flirt though, he should probably tone that down.

Between Maggie tripping all over herself around a man of God, then her crazy interactions wit...more

A lighthearted story that was fun to read - I laughed out loud and really enjoyed it.

Narrated by Xe Sands - Narration 5*s

The story itself 3*s

The excellent narration of this one kept me going with the storyline and bumped up my overall rating for the audiobook version.

While I really enjoyed listening to the quality of the voices given the book its self was sweet chick lit and that's not a genre I'm fond of.

It took me awhile to get into the book, but it turned around for me toward the end. I would give it 3.5 stars.

This is a really sweet romance. Maggie Beaumont is the owner of Joe's Diner in Gideon's Cove, a fishing town near Maine. She has been very unlucky in love and is waiting for Mr Right to come along and sweep her off her feet. Maggie tries the dating game (with help from the community and her family) with often hilarious results. But as often happens, Mr Right is right in front of her and it's not the new parish priest, the young and handsome Father Tim.

As with any small town where everyone knows...more

I generally enjoy Kristan Higgins. Quirky characters, fun, bouncy plots, realistic dialogue: It's not deep literature, but her books are often the perfect lazy afternoon read.

This one, though, just didn't quite do it for me. Our heroine, Maggie, is the sort I normally like. She's a little older (about 35, I think) and the owner/manager/main employee in a small diner. She's generally kind-hearted, helping out in the church and community. She has a lovely dog that follows her around. She's a littl...more

Catch of the Day is another good read from Kristan Higgins. Unbeknownst to me beforehand but Catch of the Day involves characters that will pop up again in a secondary role in Somebody To Love. Then other secondary character from Somebody to Love also appear in the main role in The Next Best Thing. I like that these three books are intertwined. Catch was released first, followed by Next Best, then by Somebody. I would recommend reading them in that order if possible.

Catch of the Day follows Mag...more

Maggie, in Catch of the Day, is the unmarried half of identical twins. Her sister Christy has a great husband, a beautiful baby, and a very nice house. Maggie is happy for her sister, but doesn't see why she can't have the same thing for herself. Then Tim O'Halloran comes into the diner: light brown hair, green eyes, broad shoulders, beautiful hands, and an Irish brogue. She falls in instant crush, and the only thing missing is what the man does for a living, because as he was telling her, there...more

As charming and funny as this little book was, there seemed to be some things lacking. The main character and diner owner who is just too saintly and accommodating in my opinion of course; Maggie rambles on endlessly whenever she was in a strained situation; while endearing at first it quickly became annoying along with her uncanny ability to jump to conclusions and embarrass herself. Father Tim, the Irish man of the cloth has his own thing going on while Maggie lusts after him in the beginning....more

Die Schauplätze, C...more

Maggie is in love with a priest, Father Tim. She Lives in Gideon Cove, Maine, just over 400 residents a year.
Owns and works at Jo's Diner and meets everybody that comes in so maybe she can get a date. Volunteer a lot also.
After going off the road and diving off her bike cut leg and it started to rain. Malone is the one who picked her up, he's her brothers friend, a lobster man
Maybe if she dates other it'll take her mind off the priest...

I have started this, and so far I am not liking the lead character AT ALL. She is an idiot. And way too desperate. The scenes are kind of funny, but I don't like when I'm laughing at something just because it's embarrassing. We'll see...
Okay, I finished, and I'm glad I kept reading, because it did get better. It was pretty good overall. I spent most of the book totally turned off by Maggie though, because she is just so desperate. Once Malone came into the picture, the book definitely improved....more

A sweet, slight book that actually did better on developing secondary relationships than it did on writing the main couple. I was invested in the heroine's diner, her parents' faltering marriage, her own romantic mishaps, her brother's unexpected roimance-- all of it. I liked the town, I loved her dog. Maggie was maybe two shades too saintly for me to love to my bones-- helping out so many people all the time just didn't feel real to me-- but I liked her and I liked her love interest, Malone, al...more

I stepped out of my usual historical romance reading, and ordered this as a Barns & Noble price match. After all, who can resist the cute puppy on the cover? I was disappointed on several levels of this book. First, the main character was in love with a priest for much of the book. There was even a reference to "The Thornbirds". I know the set up was so that the main character could have something to move on with, but well, that plot didn't work for me. Second, the hero was angsty. While I l...more

I'm pretty sure I have established that I adore Kristan Higgins. I've read four of her books and have several more on my TBR pile. I probably pay her rent.

But I think she and I might have words over Catch of the Day. Dare I say it? I did not love this one.

Maggie Beaumont owns and operates her grandfather's diner and pines away for Father Tim. Yes, that's right. She's in love with a priest, or at least she thinks she is. Her affections are due more to the fact that she lives in a small town with...more

Maggie is the owner of Joe's diner and is quite happy with her quaint life - except her love life. It seems she has a crush on the priest who is trying to match her up with the fine young men of her community. She tries to date, but it is destined to end in disaster every time. She envies her sister who has a loving husband and a cute baby, but almost gives up hope completely on having a love life.
Malone is a man of few words and the words he uses involves nodding and grunting. He's a a lobster...more

When I first finished the book, I was prepared to give 4 stars but after giving it some thought, I'm so annoyed with certain aspects that I was tempted to knock it all the way down to 2. I settled up at 3 stars and a need to explain what didn't work for me.

First person present tense is not my favorite. However, it worked for most of the story. At times, Maggie came off as a little too much but I chalked it up to the tense and moved on. Present tense has a way of making every little detail sound...more

The story is about a chatty & friendly small-town Maine diner owner/waitress who has a crush on the new priest & tries to get over it by dating other people recommended by the priest & others but nothing works out. She unexplicably finds herself suddenly attracted to loner & very silent lobsterman who she has quick affair with. But she's uncertain about their relationship since she doesn't know much about him because of his reluctance to talk about himself or their relationship....more

4.5 stars. I’ve graded this up a bit, because it’s so unusual for me to enjoy this type of book so very much. Sometimes cliches are the simple truth: I laughed, I cried, I couldn’t put it down.

The story is a pretty familiar one (especially if you’ve ever read a Higgans book.) Our narrator Maggie is a small-town Maine girl in love with a man she can’t have -- in this case, a Catholic priest. Maggie tries valiantly to move on with her life, embarking on a series of truly terrible blind dates. This...more

What a wonderful romance story that had me gripping to the edges of my seat in anticipation and staying up all night just to finish it.

Maggie was a very real type of girl and I think the author conveyed Maggie's feelings in a way that everyone can relate to. The story had me rooting for Maggie and squealing whenever something good happens to her. The dog in the book tugged at my heartstrings and made me quite emotional as well but overall the flow of the book and the consistency certainly was t...more
