“You’d never see the ghosts, not properly. You’d only catch a glimpse of their shapes out of the corner of your eye and you’d hear their stolen, vengeful scream; an ear-piercing shriek to steal the lives of anyone who heard it.”

Thanks to his pushy publisher, accomplished author Craig decides a weekend at his fathers cabin is the perfect retreat to finish his next best seller. Unfortunately Craig's wife Susan decides to turn his work getaway into a family getaway.

After a NOT so fun filled rode trip the family finally arrives at the cabin and to their surprise, it's been vandalized. Fully aware his family cannot stay there in its current condition, Craig decides to go pick up some cleaning s

The Cabin is another gripping horror novella by Matt Shaw in which he scares the shit out of you in the old fashioned way, there’s no gore, no extreme violence this is pure atmosphere and psychological horror that prays on some of your inner most fears.

Craig, his wife Susan and their two daughters set out for a weekend away at his Cabin, once his Fathers, he’s not been there for a long time and they’re hoping for a peaceful break.

Craig is entertaining with a dry, sarcastic humour, his daughters

I'm trying something completely different! A short horror story Buddy Read with my (IRL) friend Doodlepanda.

Have you seen the cover on this thing?? *shivers*

***3 very creepy stars***

Very good build-up, lots of tension, very very creepy. I literally got the chills.

The ending was like I said in my last status update:
"What the hell did I just read? Just, whaaaat? I... I what... how... WHY?"

Mmm-hmm *nods knowingly*

Book #2, please... The Cabin II: Asylum

This will be short and sweet, kind of like this short story... well, except for the sweet part, because holy shit balls - what happens is NOT sweet by any means.

The Cabin was a fun, quick, and terrifying read! This book reminds me of what would be the book version of the game Slenderman, it's deep-rooted in darkness and what we all fear, the unknown. Shaw balances light and darkness beautifully. The books simple prose leads the reader into Craig's mental unbalance so well. By the end of the sto

When Craig was a child, he used to travel to the cabin with his father, a writer, to get away from everything for a bit. These are some of his favorite memories. Now, all grown up and an author himself, he thinks that some time at the cabin is just what he needs to finish his newest book. Unfortunately, his wife, Susan, thinks some time at the cabin with the kids sounds like a perfect family vacation. Not much quiet time for writing now. With his publisher already pushing him about his deadline, ...more

A lot can happen in the woods at night... ;)

I enjoyed (is that the right word?) reading this short story! It starts off nice and slow, about half way through it picks up. And it is actually quite spooky! I rarely get spooked by books, but this one managed to do it :)
The ending took me by surprise, I did not see what was coming! It wasn't a great ending (in my opinion), but the rest of the story makes up for it :)

I will definitely consider reading the second book to see what happens ne

***spoiler alert***
The characters in this book seem to ever wildly between rational and irrational behaviour. And I'm not even sure what happened part way through the book, because logic and continuity seemed to jump ship briefly. Oh, I love a good nowhere everything is messed up and confusing as long as it makes some sort of sense on some level. Now, the father, in trying to prevent a shooting, indirectly/accidentally causes the clerk to be shot while wrestling with a yo

Having previously read Buried, I was aware that Shaw wrote fairly dark books and was looking forward to stepping away from my usual fluffy reads. I was not disappointed.

I thought I’d set the tone and begun The Cabin fairly late in the evening, with the curtains closed and the room in virtual darkness. I shouldn’t have bothered because from the first few pages I was unaware of my surroundings and totally immersed within the story. The foundation of the book is set quickly and the characters estab

This is the story of Craig. Hoping for a quiet weekend at his father's old cabin to begin writing his new novel, his wife suggests the whole family go down for a break. After a fairly fraught journey, they arrive to find the cabin has been vandalised. Thinking it was no wonder as no-one has been to the cabin since Craigs fathers death many years before, he and his younger daughter go to the local shop to get cleaning supplies - that's when Craigs troubles really begin...

For the vast majority of the story (and by this I mean, maybe, 50 of the 88 pages) it was a 2 star read for me. Don't get me wrong, I loved Craig's sarcasm, I just thought that a wonderful idea wasn't executed as well as it could have been. There were certain details that just irked me. Like his constant repetition of the words "whilst" and "lad". Simple, mindless complaints on my end, really. But still, they happened so often that it just distracted me from the story itself. A horror writer decided to go to a small, cabin in the middle of backwoods of America. What could possibly go wrong? Well, what do you think?

Anyway, that's what happens in this short book. Yet even though it is short, there appear to be three sections to it.

The first is a road trip, complete with annoying little kid, stroppy teenager and long suffering, if rather sarcastic father. Then we move into move into somewhat standard small town America weirdness, with dodgy locals, and then we get the
I hate giving low ratings to Matt's books as on the whole I find them excellent. This fell short for me though for a few reasons. Firstly the actual ghost story appeared to be a combination of several horror films I could name. Nothing really that original in its concept. Secondly, the main character's actions (Craig?) did not react in a realistic manner to the events unfolding around him. I can live with it in films, but in books I need to believe more in how people respond. The fact that he ...more

This was only a short eBook, but that’s no problem I love short stories. It just means there’s no waiting around for the action to start and that was the case here. Only a short way in and we’re trapped alone in one spooky cabin.

I have to say I really didn’t like the main character; he was so negative about his family and seemed like a bit of a jerk. But I guess it didn’t matter if you like him or not for this kind book. I can’t say I was scared reading this but I sure got spooked a couple time

After reading over 1100 books of a different genre I stumbled over to Mr. Shaw (don't know why or how).
This man is truly talented. So far I have read the Peter Chronicles now Cabin. When I tell you I am afraid to approach my Kindle when I read his books it is not an understatement. But like a train wreck I can not look away. Looking forward to the rest of his catalogue.

The cabin is a clever tale about an author who wants to finish his latest novel and decides to go to the cabin of his boyhood to finish writing. Unfortunately, his family is with him. All of you who are writers will know what I mean. Things go from bad to worse, as they should in a horror tale, but the clever part is how they go bad and what the worst is.

Definitely a different take on the psychological factor you would take into account for people dealing with a haunting. This could happen to anyone in the blink of an eye. The ending gave me the chills. A must read for people that like ghost stories.

Wow Matt has done it again, by that I mean he was able to suck me into a story so much that I was jumping during some parts. This book was an awesome read, I'm really surprised the ending was the way it was cause the whole time I thought I knew the way it would end and then BANG a huge twist!!!!!

MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life a
