What a clever concept. G.M. Barlean tells the story of four women, each through the "course" of a meal, and weaves them all together in the end. And with chapter names like "Second Course: Septic Salad," they are hard to resist. The story is about four women--each mistreated in one way or another by a man--who cook up a little culinary revenge. The tales are well-plotted and the characters well-drawn. Each woman has her own style and voice, and despite humorous moments, the underlying meaning ca ...more
I didn't know what to expect from this book. It didn't seem like my normal genre, but I really enjoyed it. There are four stories of different women: Gloria and her Jalapeno poppers (she's stuck in a dead-end job with an ungrateful boss who brings out her inner demon); Roberta and her yummy potato salad (she wants to rid herself of childhood scars and save future girls from a despicable uncle); Chicky and her killer chili (she falls for a hot cowboy who ends up having violent tendencies); and Te ...more
Read this book on kindle, it was really good! Nice collection of short stories, all with a new character and a recipe, a a wonderful tale of someone so deserving of revenge you almost shiver with glee thinking about it! But these ladies are good hearted and lucky, and I'll leave it at that. They allude to a third party, perhaps the Devil, trying to collect some stray souls so in the final story, he brings all these ladies together, with their recipes, in a cooking contest! I'm not even going to ...more

Great stories of people dealing with the darker sides of their desire and psyche. Their souls are on the precipice of peril and the tales leave openings for their fates to fall to either side. Intriguing and clever at many points and overall a great read.

I like the recipes and I liked the stories, but it seemed that the author was running out of steam at the end. That's why it lost a star. But a very nice, light read for a surprise free hour :)
Dessert , like always, was my favorite !

My life is full, my friends are many. I write, I read and I read about writing. When I'm not doing that, I'm quite probably cooking.

I have a wonderful husband, two grown children busy living their own lives, a silver Schnauzer and a shedding white cat.
