The Gleaning is about a witch and warlock who are supposed to be enemies instead of lovers. Lily and Logan have been raised to fight each other to keep a balance between their light and dark magic. So disappointed in this specific book, but not overall; this will be a challenging review to write. The first book was so good and this second book left me feeling frustrated. I now have soo many more questions and seriously only one answer from all my questions in the first book. I know who the doppleganger is and that is it. The first book was still wonderful enough that I will wish to continue reading the series, so obviously the author knows what she is doing and has done something correct to evoke those feelings. This book just feels like a filler book, necessary but not your favorite. But seriously, I can handle one book like this, but the rest of the series must be on the top of its game from here on out to keep driving the plot and characters (which I honestly believe can be done).

My major complaint is that this book is not nearly as interactive as the frist book and it is so very short in length (I read the entire book, including all versions, in less that 3 hours). I started reading it, I got one option to chose from and then it was over. I was really expecting and looking forward to more twists and bends and options. Being the nerd that I am, I like toread all of the versions of the book; I like the multiple version because it allows you to learn a lot of things about the characters what are not included in every version. It makes things clear and you can actually see an almost full picture.This book just seems to feel like it was lacking that aspect. I felts like The Gleaning was good, but not great. The length of the book was really a major downfall, it was just so short and I just feel like nothing was able to build-up and actually happen. It is almost like this book should have been part of the first book or part of the third book, but not its own entity. The ending is not nearly as surprising nor as climatic as the first book.

I also didn't feel like any of the characters progressed as much as they should have. There is still so much mystery about all the major players (old and now new) and even the story of Lilly's distant grandmother, Rose, and her diary left much to be desired for. Although Rose's memories prove to be useful, they don't leave you feeling complete and I am not sure if there is more use from the diaries or not. It wasn't made clear. I understand wanting to keep the mystery going to drive the story and keeping the reading intrigued, however, I have learned very very little and I have no point of reference to try and use what I have learned.

I still love the magic aspect of the story. It is intense and fascinating. Also, the love story between Lilly and Logan becomes steamier and you can feel that they actually have a bond; now if only people would stop trying to interfere with them :). I personally enjoy love stories that do not involve a love triangle so I am not sure what Jude is going for and if I will end up enjoying his character or not. Power obviously, but I need to see what Jude does with his further actions and what he is trying to get out of everything. Still don't know what is going on with Jacob and his private company. I have no idea why every one is seems so obsessed with the charm necklaces at the end of the book. To sum it up, I still don't know what is going with anything.... So we will see. I am excited to see what will happen next and how the story will progress.

There is this quote by Andre Gide that says:

“A straight path never leads anywhere except to the objective.”

Now, I know that this particular quote is a big ball of hidden meanings and Yoda-esq wisdom, but it is literally the only thing I could think about when reading “The Gleaning.”

I read and reviewed the first book of this series called Witch's Brew and LOVED it! You can read it here. These books are a little different from an original book meaning where you able to choose you're own "destiny." Let me explain.. As you're reading the reader gets an interactive experience and is able to chose which way they want the story to go. The ending is still the same but you get to take different ways to get there. I read both ways just so I could be able to review it better.

Witch’s Brew (Spellspinner’s 1) left us with a steamy and heart-wrenching cliffhanger. Well, The Gleaning picks up right where we left off. And thank goodness for that because things are getting SERIOUSLY questionable in Melas County. I read The Gleaning on the heels of Witch's Brew because I could not get enough of the story. I love tales of magic and strong women coming into their own or being charged with a higher cause. In the Gleaning, Lily has both and she takes on the challenge like a true leader. Her connection with Logan is electric, a yin and yang dynamic that makes the reader believe in soul-mates. Well started off literally where book one came to a halt. It was a very fast paced and short. It didn't take me that long to read. It was good though. We find out who is the other 'Lily'. You find out some answers, only to be left with more questions.

{my thoughts} - I really enjoyed the interactive parts of the first book. This second book being a non-interactive one. I wasn't as impressed with. I went to Amazon to purchase it but because I only have the kindle app and not a kindle that wasn't an option. This was however, a nice addition to the story. I absolutely loved Witch's Brew, the first installment of the Spellspinners of Melas County, so I was extremely excited to get the chance to read The Gleaning, and I was not disappointed!

Witch's Brew left off at a crazy cliffhanger...so I was definitely looking forward to jumping right into The Gleaning, and it takes off right where the first part left off. The reviewers copy I received wasn't interactive yet, so I got to read both of the main paths for the book, and I have to say that they were...more I absolutely loved Witch's Brew, the first installment of the Spellspinners of Melas County, so I was extremely excited to get the chance to read The Gleaning, and I was not disappointed!

Witch's Brew left off at a crazy cliffhanger...so I was definitely looking forward to jumping right into The Gleaning, and it takes off right where the first part left off. The reviewers copy I received wasn't interactive yet, so I got to read both of the main paths for the book, and I have to say that they were both pretty great...although I definitely had one that I preferred. I won't tell you which though because that might influence your decision...but no matter what decision you make for Lily and Logan...you won't be disappointed! I do suggest that you try them both out though...just to see what you might have missed. ;)

As for the story itself, it was awesome! In this one we finally get the the Gleaning itself where the Daughters of the Light and the Sons of Darkness face off...and boy is it intense! We see what finally happens during the Gleaning, and before that we get some moments between Logan and Lily! :D I could definitely do with more of those, but I was satisfied with the ones I got...especially in my preferred version of the story. ;D

We get to learn more about Logan's past in this one, and we get to read some more of Lily's great-great grandmother Rose's Diary. Slowly, the mysteries of the Rognaithe prophecy are coming into place, and we're starting to get to see how Logan and Lily fit into it all. I love how Heidi R. Kling has started to reveal everything while also maintaining a lot of mystery for us...we know as much as Logan and Lily do, so we have to slowly piece it all together as they do. I've also definitely enjoyed getting to see Lily and Logan together...I just love them. I'm a total sucker for forbidden romances, and these two definitely have one.

I just have to mention interactive stories themselves in this review, and I have to say that I love them! I'm so glad that Coliloquy and their fabulous authors are putting these together for us. I don't think I ever read any Choose Your Path books, but I remember playing games that had it...mostly Oregon Trail. I always loved the whole decision part, and I think it's fantastic that we get to experience it through these books. :D We get to help choose how Lily and Logan's story turns out, and if you want, you get to see how things could've been different. I just think it's a fantastic idea, and I like that it gives us readers a little bit of power in the story. :D

I absolutely loved this book, and I can't wait to see what will happen with Lily and Logan next! I recommend The Gleaning and this series to anyone who loves magic, and to anyone who loves a forbidden romance. I'd also definitely suggest it to anyone who wants to try out an interactive story, and you can always check out each option and see how the story differs with the choice you make. :D(less)

I mean the world was so memorable that once I started reading, it all came back to me very quickly. Lily and Logan have such great chemistry that I find myself hurrying to get to more pages just to see them together. And of course, I am totally intrigued with the notion of witches and warlocks and the idea of this ceremony that could tear everyone apart or bring them back together.

While I love the story and find myself rooting for Lily and Logan the entire time, I love the choice pages. Usually, I read it these books through once, make my choice and continue on. Sometimes, I go back to the choice pages and choose differently just to see what the next few pages bring. I have to admit, I actually read this book more than once because every time I went back and made a new choice, the story went in so many different directions, it was like reading a new book! I absolutely loved it. While the basic plot stays the same, the way things happen and the timing of important plot points could change. It is not just that a few of the pages change, it really does change the story until the end. I also think it really shows an author’s ability to be able to change a story in so many ways yet still have it be the same. Heidi is VERY good at this! I will be counting down the minutes until the third installment is released.

I definitely recommend this book/series to everyone who loves books about witches or the paranormal. It is also a great way for the skeptics to try out an ebook! Make sure you check it out and enter our contest to win a copy of the ebook!(less)

THE GLEANING by Heidi R. Kling is the second book in the Spellspinners of Melas County, a pretty awesome e-book series that is choose-you-own-adventure. Yeah, I KNOW. It’s full of witchy goodness, with witches and warlocks basically hating on each other and a prophecy about a chosen one who is supposed to bring the two groups back from the depths of their fear and loathing of each other. THE GLEANING is literally about the Gleaning, a gathering/event whereby a witch and a warlock battle each other to steal the other’s magic and life force. (Read book number 1, WITCH’S BREW, to get the full picture, friends!) And wouldn’t you know it: our two main characters–the star-crossed lovahs, Lily and Logan–are chosen to do battle against one another. But wouldn’t you know it TWICE that all is not as it seems.

Maybe I’ll give you guys a little background first: Lily is a witch. Logan is a warlock. They aren’t supposed to associate with each other. Warlocks in Heidi R. Kling‘s series think that witches are evil, conniving vixens bent on stealing the warlocks’ magic. The witches think the warlocks are…well, basically ditto. Lily and Logan are kind of exceptional in their own ways, and the witches believe that Logan might be this chosen one everyone is all gaga over. There’s all kinds of witchy shenanigans going on, power plays by both the ladies and gents, and hanging over the whole thing is the relationship between Lily and Logan. Fraught, sexy, dangerous, and full of secrets. Woot!

THE GLEANING picks up with Lily and Logan a little bit at odds over some pot-stirring that took place at the end of WITCH’S BREW courtesy of Lily’s doppleganger. (Yeah. She has one of those, and she likes to cause trouble.) This doesn’t do anyone any favors, because the Gleaning itself is just around the corner, and both the witches and warlocks look at is as a display of power, of one group being better and stronger than the other. The action in THE GLEANING is pretty good, although I thought the stuff that went down in WITCH’S BREW was a bit more…MORE. That’s not to say that big things don’t happen, because they do. But something about book 1 seemed a little more gripping.

Further complicating things is the beginnings of a triangle. Jude, another warlock who is basically a big jerkface (so far), starts playing mind games with Lily and trying to worm his way into her thoughts, not only causing her to be confused about her feelings for Logan, but also question Logan’s being the chosen one. I’m interested in him for sure, and I’m feeling a little bit like I could get burnt out by Logan and Lily’s meant-to-be-ness, and Jude certainly brings the smoldery, douchey, danger.

Overall, I felt like THE GLEANING was good, but not great. The biggest problem for me? It was…short. I felt like there was hardly much time for things to happen. Part of me wishes that this series, instead of being 10 books long was something more like 3 or 4, cramming more juicy stuff into fewer books. It would be a little easier for me to keep track of what’s going on and would keep things from being so spread out. Sometimes things seem a little too stretched out or something. And choosing the different paths in this book wasn’t as satisfying in terms of plot. It’s still fun, but wasn’t as obviously different paths.

All that being said, I’m still invested in the story, and intrigued by the prophecy and the mythology and Lily and Logan. There’s 8 books left! The only way things can go from here is straight to crazytown, which I LIVE there, so I like the sound of that very much.(less)

Heidi R Kling really stirs the pot with this spellbinding sequel to Witch's Brew. All the stops have been pulled out and while I was not as crazy as to the drama that went down for part of the book, all in all, it was a pretty fine sequel.

I enjoyed Witch's Brew and was excited for The Gleaning. It surpassed my expectations. Without giving too much away, there's a dark and a light version of The Gleaning both well-written. I especially love the scenes between Lily & Logan, not to mention the battle at the Stones. The interactive elements do not disappoint, and neither does some of the neat things that Heidi does with text.

As with the first book, I attempted to read through all the possible scenarios in the story although I feel that this time I may have gotten lost once or twice. Though it is cliche' I shall say what I thought at many points in this second volume of the tale, "and the plot, she thickens!" Lies and truth, trust and betrayal, and so many secrets make this an addicting read. I will most certainly be keeping an eye out for the next book in this series... I am hooked!

good 2nd part to the series. full thoughts to come about logan/lily

This is the 2nd adventure where you choose what happens with Lily and Logan. Its starts off with Logan and Lily having their star crossed romance tested in different ways . Lily learns more family history. Logan learns more about the school and his uncle.

This was a good adventure , and learning about the witches in Melas. Logan & Lily is tested by outside help. Someone has gleaned both Logan and Lily. We also met Jude , and...more
