A major modern conundrum is how the Arab/Israel conflict remains unresolved and, seemingly, unresolvable. In this inspirational book, Rabbi Michael Lerner suggests that a change in consciousness is crucial. With clarity and honesty, he examines how the mutual demonization and discounting of each sides’ legitimate needs drive the debate, and he points to new ways of thinkin ...more

I have been interested in reading Embracing Israel/Palestine for quite a while, but was also intimidated by its hefty length. Unfortunately, overall I found the intimidation to be justified -- the book was not easy to read and it really felt like a project to get through it. While he has some interesting ideas that I will be thinking about some more, they are not presented with the clarity and crispness I was hoping for. Only 2 chapters in, but already I'm humbled by the complexities of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Lerner skillfully walks a narrow path of presenting both sides of this reality. Dipping into plenty of historical reference along the way, he refrains from getting mired in minutiae, while managing to paint what feels like a fair and complete picture of this bitter, long-running conflict. My western cultural upbringing, or perhaps it's simply my humanity, wants a side to be chosen already. Lerner ...more

Lerner presents a history of the establishment and conduct of the State of Israel from Zionism as an idea to the present day, with perspectives from the Israeli-Jewish and Palestinian views. His premise is that both populations suffer from societal PTSD that fogs decision making and subverts reconciliation. The last chapters suggest an "evolved" spiritual approach toward understanding and healing the mid-east struggles and the planet. He calls upon the Israeli peace movement to stand strong. The ...more

A well-documented book, going back to history and personal experiences with Israelis and Palestinians. It is presenting both contentions and gives answers and solutions
