I have a dream (intermediate)
Audience: Although this is a simple book about a speech we have all heard I feel this would best fit grades 4-6. I believe it best fits those grades because it can lead to so many different things for the students. The pictures will be helpful for those students reading and these students will best understand the speech itself.

Appeal: This will appeal to the students because the pictures help us see what MLK wanted while he was talking. The speech itself is not extr...more

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of it’s creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, 28th August 1963.

Do you have a dream? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr did. He was an American clergyman, activist, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He had a dream for freedom and equality of all people, no matter the colour of their skin. On August 28th 1963, he stood before the n...more

Nelson took on an ambitious project, and made some fine choices. The cinematic techniques are what strikes me most. As I read I moved back and forth between establishing wide shots, medium range shots, and close-ups. Some of the close ups and wide shots are extreme. The cover and the pages with the line "From every mountainside, let freedom ring!" are extreme close ups. Extreme close up has two effects visually. 1. It magnifies the value and intensity of the person being represented (obvous), an...more

This is the 2012 picture book that I chose as deserving the Caldecott award for 2013. I don't even know where to begin? This book sends such a powerful message from such an influential leader. The entire book unfolds page by page breaking down Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous speech, "I have a dream." The words made famous by such an ispiring individual have been brought to life for today's young children to see. The illustrations are so vivid that they look real. The illustrator has done a remar...more

*This review was written on January 21, 2013, which is both MLK Day and Inauguration Day*

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr Day in the United States and what better way to pay tribute to him than to remember his life and his words. And in Kadir Nelson's stunning book I Have A Dream, you can do that.

I got chills down my back when I first read this beautiful book, the same kind of chills I get whenever I hear Dr. King's moving speech. Now, highlighting the last part of the speech, the dream excerpt,...more

There could be no better pairing than the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the illustrations of Kadir Nelson. The forty page picture book comes with a CD of King's famous "I have a dream" speech from 1963, allowing the reader to hear the prosody with which he spoke, that drew in so many listeners from that point forward.

The illustrations equal the intensity of the speech/text, with dramatic angles and lighting of realistic paintings that place you into that moment in 1963. Some pages il...more

I pretty much love everything that Kadir Nelson does. He's one of my favorite illustrators out there. I just love how emotional and powerful his art is. The text of I Have a Dream is the speech of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous speech. There's even a CD that comes with it with a recording of the speech, and the full speech is printed on the back. Each line or phrase of the speech is accompanied by an image. For example, "my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will...more

The power of Martin Luther King’s words meet the beauty of Nelson’s art in this luminous picture book. Using lines pulled directly from the latter part of King’s famous I Have a Dream speech, Nelson shows young readers how history was made that day. From King himself standing before the Lincoln Memorial to the seas of people listening, people of all colors standing side-by-side. Kadir moves back and forth between capturing the magnificence of King and his speech to images of what the world being...more

Any books that have to do with civil rights really interest me. I love teaching children about that time period and what people had to go through so that they know how the world has been in the past. I think this book is great because it doesnt have TOO MUCH information and the illustrations are AWESOME. I have so many different ways to incorporate this into my 1st or 2nd grade classroom because there are so many different things to do. I would also talk to the children about real life stories m...more

This beautifully illustrated book of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous speech from 1963 is a must for any educator to have in their library. The illustrator, Kadir Nelson, has won a 2013 Coretta Scott King Book Award Illustrator Honor.

Kadir Nelson is an African-American artist whose works have been exhibited in many publications, both nationally and internationally. Many of his paintings are in collections of notable institutions and public collections, including the U.S. House of Representa...more

Thank you Dr. King and Kadir Nelson - this book is a magnificent blending of two powerful communicators. The speech - or at least some of its phrases - on August 28, 1963 is almost so familiar that we can hear King's voice and words in our minds. Nelson gives us the few at the end, the crescendo. Each phrase or short paragraph is paired with his commanding oil paintings. And Nelson gets us to all the right spots at the event on the Mall in Washington DC: looking from above over the crowd toward...more

This book was beautiful! The pictures are outstanding! I have never seen a book geared for children with Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech. This book was published this year and I am so glad I stumbled apon it. I think our history is important. I will be adding this book not only to my classroom library but also to my own children's library at home. I think it's a great way to remeber our nations past and educate our nation's future. This book is great for black history month. It's an easy read an...more

Kadir Nelson has outdone himself with the magnificent oil paintings he produced to illustrate some of the most iconic excerpts from Dr. King's most famous speech (the complete text is included in the back of the book, as is a CD with Dr. King delivering the address). This is a book that should be in every American classroom and library. The dignified and statuesque artwork, combined with Dr. King's inspirational language, cannot fail to move anyone who sees and reads this book.

Artist Kadir Nelson has taken one of the most powerful and inspirational speeches in history, and created a beautifully illustrated book set to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic speech delivered on Aug. 28, 1963. Nelson’s oil paintings are masterpieces and a feast for the eyes and soul. I was mesmerized by the strength and power in each painting. Now a new generation of children will have the opportunity to learn about this great civil rights leader.

Kadir Nelson's artwork never fails. His images are the perfect pairing with the words of Dr. King. While the images of people, particularly those of the linked hands and the illustration of Dr. King saying "From every mountain, let freedom ring", are stunning, the landscapes are also beautiful.

I appreciate the note at the beginning about the minor changes but it is rather small and could be easily missed. But glad to see the entire speech at the end.

Kadir Nelson took the most famous section of MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech and charged it with even more emotion with his moving illustrations. I have heard the "I Have a Dream" speech many times and it still makes me cry to this day. Kadir Nelson brought that emotion right back to me and will hopefully bring this important milestone in our nation's history to light for a new generation of kids. I could hear King's voice as I read his historic words.

I put off reading this one until today. Honestly, I get lost in Kadir Nelson's work. It's luminous and powerful and the perfect complement to one of the most luminous and powerful speeches of the 20th century. I never get tired of reading/ hearing that speech and I never tire of viewing Nelson's art. A must purchase for all school libraries. You may think you have enough MLK books; but you don't. Your collection is not complete without this one.

I think that Kadir Nelson is amazing. His illustrations to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech are just amazing. But then again, from someone who wowed me with We Are the Ship I am not surprised.

It has been a long time since I have read a picture book I have want to get my own copy immediately.

First of all it is impossible to miss when you have good text. King's "I Have a Dream," is one of the best out there.

Kadir Nelson's illustrations take fabulous text and make it AMAZING!

His illustrations are full of texture and movement.

This is one not to be missed and I'd like to see it win the Caldecott.

I can't imagine anyone better to illustrate this than Kadir Nelson, and he does a marvelous job as always with his large-scale, photo-realistic oil paintings. I'll admit it; I can't even read these words without tearing up a little. Includes the full text of the speech printed in the back, as well as an audio CD, which is great -- all kids should be able to hear the words as Dr. King delivered them.
Sarah
Beautifully illustrated. Comes with the original recording of the full speech, which my sons listened to over and over. Good to be reminded of the less upbeat and cheery parts of the speech. And good to make one wonder how exactly one would have behaved during those difficult times. I'd like to think I know, but I suppose I never really can, until the dogs and fire hoses are turned on me.

Nelson takes part of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s inspirational "I Have a Dream" speech and accompanies it with breathtaking paintings. He's able to capture the spirit of King's ideas in stunning visuals. I love that the book includes a CD of the speech in its entirety. The whole speech is also written at the back of the book. Every time I read or hear it, it sends chills through me.

Nelson reminds me of power of King's words and their power to change hearts, although all of Nelson's work is powerful, the pictures that got to me were the landscapes of America, our majestic country and it's people continues to bring new promises of new freedom and civil rights into the world. This book is available for check out at the Gadsden County Public Library.

Kadir Nelson never fails. His paintings cause goose bumps.

Nelson paints varied scenes from the 1963 Civil Rights March in Washington, D.C. Several are of Dr. King's face up close, his family and marchers as they appeared in pictures of the times.

I'm starting to lose hope that Nelson will ever receive an actual Caldecott. So many of his works have been passed over.

I love this book because of my culture. I like the fact the book is very accurate but appropriate for kids The book is informational with vibrant colors. Kids need to be informed of the past in a way the can relate to. Non fiction picture books is a great way to do that. This a great book to use in class for Black history month or Martin Luther Kings birthday.
Paul Hankins
Nelson captures the spirit of the speech, both in the literal content and the notion of King's dream realized. The pages where the words are featured only might invite discussions about page layout and how the impact of the words are brought forth by this decision. The speech in its entirety is in the back of the book as well as on a CD that comes with the book.

Kadir Nelson is one of my favorite illustrators. He is also an author. Look him up. The purchase is worth it for his art work alone, but the stories are of great value, as well. My students and I enjoyed this story and then immediately viewed the speech on TeacherTube and my second graders just kept saying, "This is sooooo cool." My heart was full.

I just bought this book a few months ago. I absolutely LOVE the wonderful paintings done by Kadir Nelson. Nelson vibrantly illustrated the famous and wonderful words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech. This book is great for teaching about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, black history month, and peace in the classroom.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the pivotal leaders of the American civil rights movement. King was a Baptist minister, one of the few leadership roles available to black men at the time. He became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–1956) and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1957), serving as its first president. His ef...more
