This is a unique little book of poems written "for two voices". The poems are meant to be read aloud by two readers whose voices sometimes call and answer, sometimes speak the words of different characters, and sometimes read in unison. The subject matter, insect life, lends itself well to this format and may capture the interest of students who are not otherwise poetry fans.

Poetry is not my favorite topic to teach, but it does help to have creative resources like this one. This...more

Joyful Noise is a selection of poetry meant to be read aloud by two readers. Each of the poems is written in the voice of different insects: mayflies speak of their short lives, while fireflies speak of their composition in lights. The poems are informational, but they are also often comic; for example, water striders speak about how they can’t teach other insects to walk on water the way they do. When I read this collection, I regretted that I didn’t have anyone to read it aloud with me; I ...more

Every time I open up this book of Paul Fleischman's "poem for two voices" I have to laugh all over again...you see, a dear friend of mine (music composer) set a few of these poems to music, which I sang on two separate occasions with baritone friends of mine. They never failed to be a hit with the audience, and they're just as fun when 'performed' as the author indicates (aloud, two voices at a time or occasionally just one or the other person reads). Really fun stuff.

The absolute standard in two-voice poems. Yeah, other poets write them, but they don't get them right. This is the only book where the poet uses the sounds in the language, and writes more of a musical duet than a poem. Crickets chirp, Whiligig beetles whirl, and grasshoppers hop. All poets could learn from this example.

I did not get this book the first time it was recommended to me. The book only truly came alive to me when used in the classroom and put in the hands of my creative middle school students. Give this book a chance and you will experience the magic as the lines come alive when read aloud. It can be truly dynamic.

This was delightful. I checked it out as an idea for me and Chris to do during our at-home dates. It's like playing duets together, except with words instead of music! Later I overheard Clyn and Russell enjoying it, too. This is one I would like to own sometime.

When you can get a bunch of school aged kids fascinated by poetry and wanting to read and write poems, then you got a great book. This was another one they wanted to steal from the library and we had to go buy our own copy. These are irresistable poems.

I listened to this book and was glad I did. Hearing the two voices made the effect meaningful. The poems describe insect life. I enjoyed the personification of the bees and the book lice.

this book is perfect: poetry from insects' point of view. makes a great source of material for open mike readings, as anyone who attended the lights-out open mike at stone soup can attest.

This Newbery is great. It's a great way to introduce children to poetry. There's nothing intimidating about it and because the subject is insects - kids are more likely to be interested.

My daughter and I read these poems together when she was small. This is a must-have for anyone who loves words and loves to share them with someone.

If Cats by T.S. Eliot can be turned into a Broadway musical, why can't this? :)
