Dare I admit that Tezuka's Deer Park is my favorite of the five Buddha books I've read so far? (I'll write it, but would never speak it aloud as my inner Rhode Islander makes an awful homonym out of those two words. :-)

While the first half of Volume 5 follows Devandatta's and Tatta's schemes for glory and retribution; and the unwitting innocents who suffer abuse and injury, it is in the second half that we begin
to experience the miracles of the newly enlightened Buddha. Two very special stories...more

Sometime in the early 90s I picked up the Japanese series in bunkobon (small-format paperback; Goodreads has only one of those registered, so I'm listing the English versions instead). I recently found the set stashed away in some boxes, so I decided to read through it again.

Tezuka playfully inserts anachronisms from lots of periods, but especially modern times. And he uses comically ridiculous depictions throughout. It works for me. But if you're looking for straight-up historical fiction, thi...more

Satu lagi selesai...

Setelah mempengaruhi pandangan Tatta, Dewadatta akhirny...more

The multiple storylines in this series add to the interest, but for me its at its best when we're following the Buddha. And having become enlightened in the fourth volume, he's mostly in a supporting role in this one, starting his teaching career by preaching to the deer at Deer Park for the most part. Not my favorite part of his ongoing saga to this point, and I can't say that the other plot thread knocked me out here. For the most part we follow Tatta as he continues his quest for revenge.

The last episode I read so far, the rest are still yet to be published. Oh I am soo curious!
This is where Siddharta started to teach the wisdom of this life in The Deer Park, with his first students were... the deer themselves! Those deer were listening and paying attentions to what Siddharta was conveying, as if they did know how to communicate in their languages. This is a very beautiful scene, to see Siddharta was sitting under a big tree and surrounded by the diligent deer.
In this book, Sidd...more

For all the series' title suggests, there is very little of Buddha in this installment. The man himself is present for a small portion of this chapter, but he makes a big impact. I marvel at the detail Tezuka packs into each chapter and although his figures are so iconic, the background detail is astonishing. His layouts are quite innovative for their time and I am not surprised that this is held in such high regard. So much to learn from this series alone, I am beyond impressed.

This volume is almost entirely comprised of pain and misery. The two main story arcs are Tatta becoming a warrior to fight the giant, Yatala, to settle the dispute between Magadha & Kosala (which just can't end well), and the story of Buddha's time in Deer Park, where he runs into Dhepa with a group of monks also undergoing ordeals (this can't end well, either.)

Story is still amazing, art is still fantastic, this segment of the plot is a little painful, can't wait for the next one!

In which Buddha begins to gather disciples (mostly deer, at this point), and Devadatta continues down his manipulative road, inciting war between two kingdoms and making use of Tatta as a pawn in his game. Buddha again takes something of a supporting role in this volume, though in the end many of the plot threads in the series thus far finally twine around him.

Good stuff, as is to be expected.

Another great one. It's interesting to see how Tezuka develops Buddha's character throughout these books. Each installment has him a bit more mature, maybe a different hairstyle, or no hair at all.

The story in the 5th book revolves as much around Tata and Migaila as well as the newly recruited giant/warrior Yatala.

The pictures are as astounding as ever, and the story is flawless.

One question I have though, how much of the story is drawn from the life of Buddha, and how much is artistic interpret...more

Sinopsis singkat: Buddha memberi ceramah pertamanya setelah ia tercerahkan.

Art: As expected.

Book ends on an interesting crossroad - Prince Crystal (of Kosala with Sudra mother)shamed by Buddha (he also saves his life), Thatta denied from killing Prince when he could, a vengeance (to avenge Chapra and his mother) that he lived for and Dhepa who had reviled Buddha, saved by transfusion of Buddha's own blood.

Eager to read more.

You have several fantastic stories in this, and how does Buddha figure into them? Well, his diplomatic skills are put to the test, that is for sure. With kingdoms warring one another and leaving countless dead, Buddhas has to find a way to make peace. The origins of war are many, and sometimes incited for the most stupid reasons.

I really enjoy this tale. I cannot put it down once I pick it up; I have to read until I finish. Tezuka was truly a master. --From A Reader's Journal, by d r melbie.

The fifth volume of the Buddha series is interesting where Buddha begins preaching first to the deer and how slowly his followers increase.

Buddha by Osamu Tezuka is an 8 volume Manga treatment of the history of the life of the Buddha. It is beautiful story telling and beautiful illustrations. I highly recommend any volume of this series.

My favorite of the series, I enjoyed the little vignettes that Buddha would tell the deer. It was moving. I was moved.

via NYPL - Not much Buddha in this volume, but who's complaining when the supporting cast are so compelling.

Really, what an interesting series! Makes me laugh out loud, all the breaking the fourth wall stuff, the characters making jokes about how they better not wear anything too elaborate because "Tezuka finds it hard to draw", all jokes directly shared with the reader, all the disruption of panels. It's genuinely funny as well as being just such an interesting and enjoyable way of framing the story of the Buddha. Top notch!

Working my way through. Finished 5. Some about the Buddha and a lot about others connected to him.
