Soraya had known since she was 14 y old that she is promised to marry the Emir who is 30 y older than her. But studying in Paris has made this promise seems unreal, in a far- fetched future. Zahir is assigned to escort Soraya to her betrothed Emir,Hussein, who is his mentor, friend and the father he didn't have. Sparks fly. Initial dislike turns to like. Misconceptions fall apart as they get to know each other during the trip that will take them to their final destination, to Bakhara, and the ro ...more

I love Annie West's stories and this was no exception. Soraya and Zahir's relationship is tension filled and seemingly impossible. And heart wrenching because they are both so determined to do the right thing by everyone, especially their emir to whom they both owe a huge debt of gratitude and loyalty. Zahir struggles to be honorable but his love for Soraya drags him in a direction he had never anticipated. Annie West slowly builds the tension in an ever tightening spiral until it zaps off the p ...more

This is the latest release from Harlequin Mills and Boon author, Annie West.

Honour is very important to a son of the desert. So what does Zahir do when he discovers that he is in love with the future bride of his master, the Emir of Bukhara, the man for whom he'd willingly lay down his life? Soraya decided long ago that romance was a trap and that she didn't want to go there. That's why she agreed to become the bride of the Emir when she came of age and completed her education. So why was she fe

A lovely read. You empathise with both the characters. The theme of duty versus desire is explored well.

Bit of a spoiler - and a rant - coming up. So be warned!

I did think the bedroom scene was not gelling properly when they were both such hotheads about doing the duty. The author has done the very best possible in fitting it in the story and you don't really mind it. But it IS out of the context of the characterization. She's engaged, and belongs to an Arab country with all the implied values.

Para pasar el rato, está bien. Terminó demasiado felizmente, nada le costaba a Annie meterle un poco más de tensión y acción a la historia. Como dicen estas estrellas, it was ok.

For some two weeks I've been looking for a book with pretty much straight forward story, that I would definitely know to have a happy ending, so that I would simply flow along with and enjoy without much of a "uh ah what's gonna happen next.." thoughts. And of course it had to be a love story. Yes I was looking for Mills&Boon type of a book.
Defying Her Desert Duty is a romance with ideal female and male characters, who get sizzling sensations right at first sight, and fall in love with each

A spirited, intelligent heroine and a passionate, honorable hero fight their intense attraction because of their loyalty and duty to their country and its ruler.

Annie West keeps up the tension throughout the novel, making the reader wonder how these two very appealing characters will find the happy-ever-after they so deserve.

The French setting is an added bonus to this engaging, sensual romance.

Maybe I have just graduated from these books and simply haven't been able to admit it to myself, but this book was a disappointment. I usually enjoy Annie West's books, but the writing here seemed forced, uninspired and amateurish. The story lacked the intensity and nuance usually present in an Annie West book.

I was bored. Reading this novel didn't really keep me entertained as others have. I liked the heroine, she was brave.
