Workaholic businessman and occasional Leatherman Jez gets stuck in Spain due to his plane being grounded thanks to the eruption of an Icelandic vulcano. For lack of anything better to do, he pays a call on his old friend and occasional lover, former porn star Nick who has gone into retirement in a villa near Barcelona. This is where Jez learns Nick is married, to incredibly shy and reclusive Jamie. Jez also learns that Nick is fatally ill--and that Nick plans to entrust him with caring for J

I'm a dissenting voice amongst the generally stellar reviews of this book. I think this is the rough draft of what could have been a truly amazing book. Here's the plot, here's what will happen, with some indicative key scenes sketched more clearly; now go finish the book.

Also some basic things needed editing. Our MCs go to a local vinyard to buy some wine. Everything looks untended; the vinter is sick.

“Sí, sí. Cancér,” he answered, coughing as if to prove a point. “My… uvas… grapes?” I nodded
A beautiful, dark, complicated story about damaged people finding happiness together, even if the relationship is unconventional. I think this book won't be for everyone; it's difficult and emotionally messy, but I loved the layers in it. Jamie and Jez truly have a "he rescued him right back" kind of love.

Despite the set-up being a storyline I don't really care for - deadly ill MC trying to secure the well-being of his better half - it pulled me in from the beginning. Poor Jamie, with his past and now being in a secure environment, only to have to deal with loosing it all again. Jez was very compelling in his journey from being a workaholic to putting someone else's well-being above said work. (view spoiler) ...more

Fabulous reviews for The Hand-me-down from Feliz and Oceankitty.

The short version...
Refreshingly un-sweet, believable and compelling romance.
Loved it!

Wow, this is one scary book!

The amount of sick people in this book is mind-boggling! Left and right peeps get laid and as a result diagnosed with scary STD stuff while catching other extremely scary non-STD illness and die, get mental illness and abuse their kids and die, get sick and die, get abused by crowds (twice) and diagnosed with scary STD stuff (twice), get sick and almost die, get sick and die, get PTSD and OCD, held hostage and get hurt (this time with no STD as a result).

This books just did not do it for me. The writing was good, the story was good, the sex was okay but I just didn't give a crap about anyone at all. I have no idea why. I think I had issues going in because the cover is so freaking awful. Shallow, I know!

What do you do when the only man you can truly call friend, who is also the only man you ever came close to loving, tells you he's dying and asks you to care for his young lover after he's gone? For that matter, what do you say? This is the predicament Jez finds himself in when he's stranded in Barcelona and looks up his old friend, Nick, and his beautiful young lover, Jamie. I'm a firm believer in the old adage that everything happens for a reason, so maybe it's fate intervening to provide Jez ...more

They say good and bad things come in three. My experience has been that in book form they come in two. Maybe I'm too obtuse to realize publishers sell "themed" books but this is the second time in probably as many weeks that I've read two books back to back that have shared characteristics. This book was the second I read this week with MCs who have either mental and/or emotional challenges. The first was Ethan, Who Loved Carter by Ryan Loveless. The reason I mention all this is because
I really had to consider what star to give this book. For likable characters, I want to give it -100 stars. But, as I have said before, it is not fair to rate a book by the lack of character strength in the protagonists.

The main character is Jez Robinson and for the most part, I really liked him. His character sees so much growth and I saw him as someone who in the end does the right thing.

Now, the character of Jamie is one F'd up fellow. There are many problems with him and we are introduced to

This is one of those hard to review books.
It is a long read and because it always seemed to be trouble and strife for the characters, it did take a lot of reading and I needed to break often.
There are a huge range of plot devices ( one reviewer listed 40 I think) so it read like a dour British soap at times - how much more can a character take, sort of thing.
It definitely won't be for everyone, though I liked some parts, really liked others and was OK with the rest.
So character wise:
Nick - didn

Enjoyed but still had a few issues

Hard to rate this one
There was so much going on, it was hard to keep up at times.
I loved Jamie. I liked that he grew during the book, he was still shy but had definitely made progress by the end of the book.
Jez, I felt sorry for at times. I liked that he freely admitted that he didn't choose the relationship but stayed by choice. He was manipulated into taking on Jamie but the way he handles him makes Jaime blossom. I also liked that he wasn't perfect, he didn

Im not a fan of this story.

I didnt believe the characters, especially Jamie, a man so painfully shy he can’t even bring himself to talk to strangers?? But fucking strangers isn't a problem??

No not a book i would recommend!
