Definitely on the hotter side of romantic, this story about an injured athlete trying to heal and find his feet again in time for the world championship and the Olympics had me engaged in the character's struggle from the start. Not only does the athlete have issues, the trainer who has been hired to make sure his shoulder has time to heal has his own problems. Not only does the athlete have issues, the trainer who has been hired to make sure his shoulder has time to heal has his own problems. The one thing they have in common is their attraction to each other, and they use that to great advantage – once they admit to themselves and each other that it may be their greatest strength.

Kenn loves beach volleyball and all he wants to do is play. Like so many athletes, all the politics around sponsors and the pressure to perform are not half as important or interesting as the game itself. He pushes himself pretty hard – and that is his biggest problem. A re-injury of his shoulder would mean he can forget the medals. Learning to listen to Dusty and trust that the man knows what he is doing is as hard for Kenn as fighting for his rights and independence when confronting his overbearing father and tyrannical coach.

Dusty is a trainer with a mission – although this one turns out to be slightly different in the way it pans out. Used to having to motivate his athletes to work hard, he is finding that the key to Kenn's success will be to hold him back, so he doesn’t injure his shoulder more by going back into full training too early. Others interfering in this plan annoy him to no end, and the increasing attraction he feels for Kenn doesn’t help. Standing up to people who don’t have Kenn's best interests at heart is not a problem for him – doing it without Kenn's full support is.

These two men are explosive together. The hard physical training and discipline requires relaxation to balance the stress – and once they hit their stride, boy do they "relax" hard together. If you like stories about athletes and their trainers getting up to more than on-the-job activities, if you enjoy the tension caused by trying to be at your best physically, and if you're looking for a fun, sexy read, you will probably like this book.

In Digging for Gold, he immediately swept this reader into the interesting and sexy lives of his characters, and even when I had come to the end of the book, I found myself wishing for more.

Kenn Majors has been working hard to make the Olympic Volleyball team. But after a well-intentioned, reckless stunt, he finds himself with an injured shoulder, and only a short time to get his shoulder back into competitive shape. When his coach hires a trainer, Dusty, to help him with this, Kenn is at first leery of him. Dusty insists on taking his recovery process slower and more easy than he’s used to. When he insists that Kenn move in with him so he can track and personally monitor Kenn’s rehabilitation, Kenn is thrown for a loop. It’s hard for Kenn to trust Dusty at first, but since his drive to work through the pain and get his shoulder back in shape for the Olympics is more important than anything else; he pushes his anxiety aside and hopes that his attraction for Dusty won’t get in the way of their professional relationship together.

Dusty can’t believe how driven Kenn is to get back into shape. Although, he admires Kenn’s determination, he’s also just as determined to keep Kenn from overdoing it so his shoulder can heal properly. At first, Dusty is resolved to keep his attraction for Kenn at bay, but the more the two men get to know each other, the more this becomes difficult for Dusty to ignore. Finally, after both men dance around the heat of attraction between them, they give into their sexual need for each other and soon find themselves feeling more than each man bargained for. Just as things are starting to get even more serious between them, Kenn’s coach as well as his dad is convinced that their relationship will do more harm to Kenn’s chance at Olympic gold. Will Dusty and Kenn be able to fight for the relationship that’s grown between them? Will Kenn be able to look into himself and know what’s best for his heart and his recovery?

I loved this book! I thought both Dusty and Kenn were amazing characters with an interesting story to tell. I loved the heated chemistry between them as well as the friendship and respect that each of the two men had for one another. I also appreciated how much Kenn grew as a character. He really learns to stand up for what he believes in and I admired his strength to fight back into competitive shape. He and Dusty are truly made for each other and I thought that as a team and as lovers they could conquer any obstacle that came their way.

I also thought the sex in this book was smokin’ hot! Whew! Keep a cold drink and a fan going when you read this one! Between the intense attraction and chemistry between the two men, and the introduction of some D/s play, I thought the sex between them was wonderfully intense to read. I would like to point out, that even though there is some BDSM in this book; it’s not over the top at all. So, even if these types of books are not your forte, or even if you’ve never read a book with this type of play, this would be a great book to check out and see if this theme interests you.

Digging for Gold is one of my favorites that I’ve read by Sean Michael this year. I liked the way he got to the heart of his characters and I’m always a sucker for his athlete/sports books. If you are looking for a fast paced read with characters that have sizzling chemistry between them, Digging for Gold is a great choice for you! Highly Recommended!

I know I said this before, but I suppose I don't learn my own lessons -- I'm putting a moratorium on Sean Michael books. I used to love her writing, but I think my taste has evolved in a different direction. I like a lot of sex in my books, that isn't it, but in this case I think I'm tired of the kind of sex that she writes, at least in the last few books I've read. That's not the only reason this book didn't work for me, and I suppose I wanted to read this book solely because it was about Olympic Beach Volleyball, but ultimately it didn't work for me at all.

Kenn is a fantastic beach volleyball player, but out with a shoulder injury from surfing. He's got everyone telling him what a fuckup he's being, no one more than his coach Steph and his dad, who seems obsessed with him winning gold in London. That's not to say that he doesn't want it -- he does, more than anything -- but getting there means so many changes in his life that he feels totally off course. He's had to take a semester off college and his partner is getting married and is soon to be a dad. Things are just different. That all changes when his coach hires Dusty, a trainer, to oversee his rehabilitation and get him in gear to start their training for Worlds and ultimately, London.

I think my first disappointment with the story was that there wasn't any actual beach volleyball, at least not anything about the sport or any on page playing time that wasn't about his injury for a small scene. If this were another Olympic sport I might have passed it up because of all of the games in summer Olympics, I watch beach volleyball the most, without fail and have really grown to love it.

For the most part, this story worked, it just didn't offer what I had hoped for. It is solid Sean Michael fare. It is rather short, but not too short for the story. There is rather a lot of sex, a fair bit of which explores BDSM but I wouldn't call this a BDSM story because that isn't the focus. There really wasn't any scenes where the characters go to know each other at all. It was all either about sex or the sport/his injury. Honestly, I never felt like I got Kenn's character for most of the book because he's a pushover. It make sense, he follows rules and his coaching and just does what people tell him, but it didn't give him personality. When that changed, it felt a little too late for me to like him as a character.

In the end, this was unsatisfying for me, but whether you like it or not will probably depend on if you like this author's work.(less)
