Hugh delivers another slow-burner in his second novel, Ian Pemberton. True to the blurb, Ian, a young Englishman, wakes up one morning fed up with his current state of life and yearns for a change. His wife, Madeleine, who seems to be the more practical of the two, is shocked and somewhat angered by his arbitrary decision to take the day off from work. This sets the tone for the rest of the novel.
That same day Ian comes across an advertisement for a housing developer in the south of Spain (the

One of those rare authors who skilfully take what could best be described as the largely mundane only to write a novel that is anything but. Not stories that instantly grabbed me but stories that slowly but surely, page by page, drew me into the lives of their characters. Characters that though in many ways are (stereo)typical Brits will I'm sure relate to many others given their topical and often worldwide concerns.

One day, he took off from work, and it fel

Having finished the sequel, Ian Pemberton, I felt that these books are less a series and more a collection of character pieces. There is the briefest mention of Barbara and Roy from the first book but besides that this is a standalone piece. Ian Pemberton revolves around a couple who move from Leicester to Spain to start up a garden furniture business. No, I'm not making this up. The entire book is about a couple trying to make it in Spain selling statues, fountains, and garden gnomes. I found ...more

Ian and Madeleine Pemberton is a British couple fed up of their humdrum lives in Leicester. Ian is a shy man and Madeleine is an arrogant and boisterous woman. But they care about each other and each other’s dreams. And that is why Madeleine supports Ian’s idea of move to Spain and they start their own business. So how do they go about with this idea? What happens to them? Will they survive in a foreign land? Read this book only if you find this blurb interesting.

What could have been a short sto
