The Sun, the Moon and Maybe the Trains

Rodney Jones
What would it take to convince you that the woods you just left is a hundred and forty-four years distant from the one you entered?
Ten years have passed since the Civil War broke up John Bartley’s family. Living with his aunt and uncle in the tiny village of Greendale, Vermont, isn’t filled with excitement for a seventeen-year-old.

RATING: 3.75 TIME TRAVELLING STARS!!
From the blurb of this book I had no idea I was going to be in for such a delightful read.
The title of this book has been woven early into the story.
“It seemed like nothing was regular anymore, except for the sun, the moon , and maybe the trains.”
I enjoyed what Rodney did with his story. We start off in 1875, meeting John, Emily and Paul. I really enjoyed the ‘feel’ of 1875 that Rodney gave to his story. I felt like I was in 1875. The manners, the speech an...more

The Sun, The Moon and Maybe The Trains was read I will not be forgetting in a hurry. John Bartley was a really nice lad, from 1875 that happened to hear a noise in the woods and went to investigate only to be thrown into 2009. He was alone and scared and wanted to go home to Greendale. Fortunately he met Tess a girl from 2009. Ok she thought he was weird at first but then started believing that John really was from 1875 and helped him find the woods and go back to his own time.

I really enjoyed this book for the first two-thirds. It was a really well-written story about a kid experiencing life in a different time period. The author did a great job of showing how John experiences all the crazy stuff in 2009. I was really drawn in to the story. I enjoyed the progress of John and Tess's friendship, and most of the story was very realistic (you know, for a story with time travel...).

Rodney Jones gives readers a taste of 1875 in Vermont. John Bartley lives with his aunt and uncle in the small town of Greendale, where children mind their elders and everyone has a place and responsibility. A routine to Rutland goes awry when on John’s way home the scenery evolves and he finds himself in 2009 Vermont. The Sun, the Moon, and Maybe the Trains is a light genre mix of science and historical fiction that readers will quickly enjoy. There’s even a hint of romance to keep readers enga...more
This was a sweet romantic YA time travel story. The main character John was a gentleman who handled everything very calmly and logically. He was sweet and likable and felt authentic. How he stayed calm while learning all about modern life is a mystery; I’m sure I would be freaking out.
Tess was a spitfire. She was a very modern teenager, and maybe a bit mean. She definitely could have shown more compassion toward John, and maybe a little less laughing at his expense. But she did come through for...more

I wasn't sure I was going to finish this book because the beginning and middle were kind of slow moving. I'm glad I stuck with it, though, because the ending was great, with all the action I had hoped to see more of in the middle. I really liked that the story was written from the perspective of the young man. It was a change from the average YA time travel romance for girls.
This was a semi-interesting time travel story. Just as it was starting to get good and interesting, it ended. A guy travels forward in time, meets girl, then goes back, then she comes back, and they both try and go back forward type of a thing. Left a lot of things hanging. I think this was also a free book, so I'm not going to complain too much!
A great quick read. I liked the author's voice and I thought having a boy from 1875 be the narrator was a unique choice. The story bogged down a little in the middle, but overall it was really enjoyable. The ending was a just a little confusing and it left me wondering whether the author might be planning a sequel to explain it.
