Although its really just an extended essay, the book still has relevance over 50 years after it was published because it is one of the few that lays out a broad interpretation of American history as a whole. Looking through the lens of law, Hurst sees America as on a continual quest to allow "the release of energy." Instead of directing individuals to create great enterprises, America tried to create conditions that allowed them to do that, almost forced them do that, basically by prioritizing " ...more
