What I liked:
-Writing style. I’m a huge fan of first person and if given the choice, I would pick first person over third any day of the week. To me, first person makes it easier to get inside the mind of the main character, and it makes it easier to show their emotions and how they react to other people.
-Scarlet, Gabby, and Jasmine. I liked the three secondary girls. They were very accepting of who they were and they weren’t ashamed of it. They were beautiful, they were deadly, and they knew it...more What I liked:

They might have even been a little proud of it. I’d love to get some more detailed background information on them and the lives they had before they changed. Jasmine was probably my favorite.
-Tyler. I really liked the first love interest and I liked that he wasn’t the perfect guy. He had epilepsy and I thought that detail was handled very well. I liked his relationship with Felicia, even though it started out as a case of insta-love. He seemed like a very caring young man and I could tell he cared about Felicia. However, I didn’t like how he seemed to be written off in an effort to make room for the second love interest, Jackson.
-Angelica. She was mysterious and dark and caring and a little two-faced, so I’m sure there will be more to her than meets the eye. I can’t wait to find out more about her history.

What I disliked:
-Felicia. I didn’t really connect with her, but normally I can overlook that if the character is smart or strong or brave or even just realistic. But I didn’t find Felicia realistic…at all. At one point, she (view spoiler) Then the next day she’s back to flirting with her boyfriend. She wasn’t even upset! If something like that had happened to me, I would have been a freaking wreck. So I didn’t like the main character, and that’s never a good thing.
-Plot. There wasn’t really a plot. The story didn’t really go anywhere. It was mostly Felicia living day to day and interacting with people. She didn’t have to overcome any obstacles, she didn’t have to learn any skills that came with her new life, and she didn’t really have to give up anything. I dislike books that act as a total introduction to a series. Something other than romance has to happen in a book to keep me interesting enough to read the next in the series, and that didn’t happen here.

Overall, this was a pretty okay book. I liked it. The main character was a little flat, but the writing was nice, the mythology was nice, and the secondary characters were nice. I would recommend this book to any fans of mermaids or sirens. I don’t know if I’ll continue the series yet. 3.5

Another amazing book from this awesome sister duo. I was skeptical from the beginning that it wouldn't be something I would enjoy because I'd never been a fan of sea tales. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Surface is one of the best young adult books I have ever read and is a must for those that are already fans of Jody and Jayme Morse.
