Another good book in the Arcane series.

Jayne Castle also writes as Jayne Ann Krentz and Amanda Quick. I enjoy all of Arcane series books no matter what name they are written under. She has a fun way of writing with Amanda Quick being the historical book, Jayne Ann Krentz the present day book and then Jayne Castle following up with the futuristic book. Rebecca Blake can detect the auras of dangerous criminals, including the one currently incarcerated voluntarily in the Chapman Clinic, Marcus Lancaster. Lancaster is a monster who has fixated on Rebecca. She tried to warn Dr. Ian Oakford at the clinic without success and is fired. Just like with the Harmonic Enlightenment community where she was raised, Rebecca doesn't belong there so she reluctantly travels back to Rainshadow Island. Years earlier Rebecca went into a fugue state, entered the Pr...more
3.5 stars for this paranormal romantic suspense. Book 2 of the Rainshadow Series and Book 9 of the Harmony Series. 332 pages with 2 sex scenes, a little swearing, no religious cussing, and some violence. This author has written for decades under various pen names: Jayne Castle, Jayne Taylor, Jayne Bentley, Stephanie James, Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Glass, Amanda Quick.

Okay…this is a bit complicated—Jayne Castle writes fantasy fiction, Amanda Quick writes historical fiction and the “real” Jayne Ann Krentz writes contemporary fiction–all with a dash of romance and most with lots of mystery. Her latest The Lost Night takes us to Rainshadow Island where there are lots of secrets.

I liked this. Prolific series authors have formulas, and Castle (Krentz) is no exception. But I almost always just sink into her books like they're the comfortable reading chair in the corner of my room. I know I'll encounter likeable characters, interesting problems (often with a paranormal edge), fun secondary characters (sometimes non-human), and a well-earned HEA.

I liked the opening of this book particularly. Usually JAK introduces you to both protoganists right away so it took a few pages to realize that Marcus Lancaster was actually a villain, not the hero in disguise. In fact, I was busy making excuses for Marcus in Chapter 1 until Harry showed up in Chapter 2. Good start. Harry and Rachel make an effective team, as is usual in JAK's fiction. Both are unusual talents that don't mesh well with others but do really well with each other. You can't help b...more
I am a huge fan of Jayne Ann Krentz no matter what name she uses when she writes. I love her characters and the crisp dialog. This book was no exception. Rachel Blake is a young woman with a strong and unusual psychic talent who was raised in the Harmony equivalent of a hippie commune. She never fit in and leaves to find her place in the world. After an unsuccessful attempt to live in the larger world which leaves her facing the unwanted attentions of a psychic vampire, she travels to Rainshadow...more
I liked The Lost Night quite a bit, although it didn’t bowl me over. The dust bunnies add a great bit of whimsy in particular. There’s a little discordance between the darker and lustier parts of the book and the whimsical light-heartedness found in the rest, but it isn’t too jarring. The unusual talents of Rachel, Harry, and those like them keep things interesting, and the mysteries surrounding the Preserve and Rachel’s lost night keep the plot moving. Despite the fact that Harry and Rachel are...more
This novel was an absolute pre-order for me. I love the Harmony and Arcane series. All of the books are designed to be read as a standalone, but I have read them in order since book one. The Lost Night offers up a suspenseful paranormal mystery with a healthy side dish of romance. Every time I open a Castle novel I find a delicious escape.

This is the first book in the Rainshadow series, but it follows Canyons of Night as far as story line. Rachel is a misfit in her home society and in the mainstream community, so she moves to Rainshadow Island to take over a book and tea shop she inherited from a couple of aunts. There she seems to fit. Harry Sebastian’s family owns the Preserve, an off limits area of the island with heavy psi disturbances. Harry is in charge of the family security operations. He comes to Rainshadow to check out...more
Not one of Jayne's better outings. It just seemed like a pale imitation of of her earlier work.
Nothing wrong with it--but...
The adventure itself is fun and we learn more about the mysterious Preserve that is at the heart of Rainshadow Island. The romance is okay, but it doesn't sparkle. Our hero and heroine, Harry and Rachel, spend a lot of time talking, but those conversations are more expository than romantic. There's no real sexual tension.

Too boring. Same old, same old, though I do wonder what happened on the Lost Night, but not enough to keep reading. This was mostly bec there was like a chapter lost between when the hero and heroine met and instantly were with each other. There was no build-up, it was just writing by numbers. And really, after as many books as JAK has written, I'd think she needs a break, to freshen things up, you know? It's all about the tall dark stranger and red haired beauty. Reallly her earliest books are m...more
I love Jayne's work, whatever name she publishes under. This book was no exception. She has a real gift for character and for dialogue, and I love how you get to see the vulnerability of her heroes as well as her heroines.
She definitely captured the constant fear that someone experiences when they have a fugue state in their past. I liked how Rachel was always dressed for a trek in the jungle after her lost night.

"The New York Times bestselling author delivers an all-new novel set on the mysterious Rainshadow Island.
With the ability to detect the auras of dangerous psychic criminals, Rachel Bonner has found peace and quiet on Rainshadow Island with her dust bunny companion. Then Harry Sebastian, the descendant of a notorious pirate, arrives to investigate strange developments in the privately owned woods known as the Preserve. There is no happiness quite like finding a Jayne Castle (Jayne Ann Krentz) book out for sale 4 days before its scheduled release date.
A synopsis of the book can be found elsewhere. Here's what I liked about it: the main characters, Rachel Blake and Harry Sebastian, both of whom have a hard time fitting in to mainstream life, the mysterious Preserve on Rainshadow Island, the cameo appearances of Slade & Charlotte from "Canyons of Night", Harry & Rachel in the SUV, Harry & Rachel in th...more

Jayne Ann Krentz, present, Amanda Quick, past and Jayne Castle, future. I love these books and look forward to each one. I like the paranormal activities and the family ties through the ages. The future takes place on Harmony, where there is a long lost alien civilization, whic some people from long ago earth can use psychic abilities that resonate through alien artifacts. There is always a love story and a mystery. I loved the hero Harry and also the heroine, Rachel. The charcters of the previo...more
There is pretty much no character development here (unless I dozed through that part) and not much to the romance (um, they have great sex and they make a pretty good team on the adventure so ... that's forever love I guess? There are worse reasons to get married. It's just not very romantic).
I like the formula of Castle's Harmony books, and while the beginning felt like an over-tired retread of that formula the last bits in the Preserve were quite imaginative and fun. Oh, and then the crazy sta...more

Straight onto my keeper-reread shelf. I love this series.
I though that this book was interesting enough, I think that if I was familiar with the world this author had previously created in her other series that I would have enjoyed it a bit more. The main characters fell a bit flat for me, like why is a spiritually enlighted pacifist trained in an exotic martial art. She never even fought anyone throught the whole book. And the romance fell flat, even thought I was rooting for Harry and Rachel to end up together, which they did. All in all, it was a p...more
3.5 stars ... I love Jayne Castle (Jayne Ann Krentz's pen name she uses for her "Harmony" series.) If you have read and enjoyed her other books set on Harmony, a planet colonized by humans 200 years ago and then cut off from Earth, you'll enjoy this one. Krentz/Castle/Quick has a formula, and she stays true to it here. I also recommend reading the first "Rainshadow" book, Canyons of Night, before reading this one. The first book introduces the setting, an island in the Amber Sea, some distance f...more
A ridiculous, fun fantasy / crime drama / romance novel that I read because I FOUND it, and after reading the publisher synopsis I couldn't say no.
I will say that apparently it's partway into a series, and starting at the beginning will elucidate some things that aren't necessary to know, but will certainly probably make reading this one more palatable.
Even so, this one was hilarious, out of this world ^_^
NSFW note! There are a couple of "adult" scenes, so beware, if someone is reading over you...more

FYI – This review is written by a huge Jayne Castle (aka Jayne Ann Krentz) fan. I have been reading her books for over 15 years now and I have no plans on stopping!

I don't know if it's just me or what, but the book opens with mention of 'psychic vampires,' and my brain went right to Orchid, book 3 in Castle's St. Helen's series. I still don't understand what's going on with the two series. Are they completely separate, related in as they occur at the same time, what?
Anyways, once I realized that Castle was introducing native fauna to the Harmony books, I really wanted to love The Lost Night. Evolutionary biology is a amateur hobby of mine and I love the i...more

2.5 stars.
I really think that Jayne Ann Krentz, and her pseudonyms, have been phoning it in lately.
What happened to the snappy dialogue, great plots, and tension-filled romances of the past?
I liked The Lost Night, but I didn't love it. I thought it was a bit better than Canyons of Night, but still not fantastic.
Our hero and heroine, Rachel and Harry, were both great characters, but there was no tension between them. There were also much fewer first-person descriptions of their feelings for one a...more

First got hooked on Castle (Krentz' future setting) 11 years ago when my husband was in ICU for a week and all I could do was sit and read and wait for his pain to subside. Rainshadow is an even more interesting place, more about setting, than Harmony. The magic between male and female is there--the psychic drama, the fierce attraction. And, it has a BOOKSTORE! (which unfortunately dates it some, who knew books would be so little-valued in the future...) Darwina is a sweetie even for a dust bunn...more
Alright, it fit in better than the last book with the Harmony series. Still, where are the ghost hunters? And no fair that the h can "fix" a burn. The H seems to almost have the same skillset as the H in Silver Master but... does he? Dunno, since there's no mention of amber on his person. The h apparently uses rainbow crystal. Didn't a previous h use that one to some extent? May be time for a reread. Am ready to go back to reading about guild bosses and their employees though.
I just finished reading the newest Jayne Castle book about the people of Rainshadow Island! I really enjoyed the new characters of Harry and Rachel. The Lost Night takes place in the futuristic world of Harmony, where psychic powers and rez-lights are common. Rachel can read auras and Harry is a hunter of strange developments and people. The story again is all about the Preserve, with its walls and secrets. Harry’s is a descendent of the one of the founders and is seeking to find out why the Pre...more
Jayne Castle's books are very old world ideals with a futuristic setting. This book is no different, set in the alien world with Ghost Hunters, Aura Readers, Dust Bunnies, Vampires and more strange creatures than I can recall. Yet the societal beliefs are very 1700-1800 Earth ideals. int his book Rachel Blake, aura healer, came from a hippy like upbringing. Trying to fit in with the mainstream community didn't fit so she moved to Rainshadow Island. Soon she meets Harry Sebastian who is on the is...more
I'd give this 2.5 stars if I could. I always like her books, but some of them (this one included) fall into the "only read once" category. I may have a bit more difficulty getting involved in the Rainshadow and Harmony stories because I don't think I've read them in order to get more about the world they're set in, which leaves me a step outside the story while I guess what certain aspects of the setting mean.
