Life is full of compromises. That's what Avi Rosen tells himself. He's a yeshiva boy turned historian, working on his dissertation and stretching his meager stipend by moonlighting as a closeted politician's houseboy. Their relationship used to feel like a real affair. Lately it seems more like a job.

It isn't until he meets someone decent that he realizes how corrupt his l...more

Avi is a teaching assistant in history department -- working on his dissertation for the past seven years. Avi is also a married politican's (Jack) male mistress; he lives in Jack's apartment, takes care of it if the politician is out-of-town. Lately though, he feels that this affair is more like work; that it's hard not to see himself as a rent-boy, since he lives under Jack's roof, and Jack gives him money for food and other living expenses. Then he meets farmer Pete ...

I had the feeling for this novel to be more dark and less romantic, and I’m glad to say I was wrong.

Avi is an History graduate student, and like most of them he is broken; when Jack, a closeted politician, offered him free rent in exchange of “safe” sex, Avi didn’t see a reason to refuse: Jack is not bad to the eyes, and he is mostly away; the fact he is married with children was not a problem, Avi is not in love with Jack, and though he is not jealous at all. If I have to be true, I didn’t like...more

Why I read it: I was offered a review copy by the author and I've enjoyed her previous books.

I finished it late last night and have to say - I really liked it. A lot. The beginning was disturbing, because on the one hand I started reading this book to take a break from the cheating Chase in Shadow and see what I got? On the other hand I didn't know that the politician was married with kids, so that was a tad disturbing as well. At least until there were some twists in the story that I didn't see coming. I know two wrongs don't make a right, but every reader has to decide for himself wha...more

I really enjoyed this book. Not only did we get a peek at how Isaac (from LEARNING FROM ISAAC) is doing but FIELDS OF GOLD is another example of Dev Bentham’s fluid writing style that takes characters from a difficult position to a period of growth to seeing what the future can bring if they make changes to their lives. I also love the infusion of Jewish holidays and culture that is part of the books in this series. It’s a little bit of the old world combined with contemporary t...more

This book’s premise was what caught my attention: a grad student lives and takes care of his boyfriend’s apartment and in the meantime meets an organic farmer that makes him question the choices he’s made so far. Of course it’s not as simple as it sounds. The boyfriend is a married conservative politician. When Levi meets Pete and their attraction flares, he realizes that his life is a mess. But he’s a...more

"Fields of Gold" is the second installment in the series and it centers around Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

While it is my least favourite book in the series, Avi & Pete's story, in my opinion, had the best entwinement of the holiday and a storyline. My favoured quote is at the end of the book when Avi invites Pete to his mother's house:

"The things is, you try to bring into Rosh Hashanah everything you want for the next year. I'd like to bring you...more

As first impressions go, not much can beat how Avi quite literally falls down in front of Pete’s produce stand, but having the cause be due to almost getting run over by a car makes for a lasting memory and a swollen ankle. The distraction Pete provides Avi, though, proves to be much more entertaining; relaxing under the sun watching the customers come and go while chatting and buying fresh vegetables and fruits all the...more

3.5 stars, rounded up for the quality of the writing. I love this author; Learning from Isaac is on my favorites shelf. This story didn't quite grip me in the same way, but it was a compelling read. The Jack plot was uncomfortable(on purpose, I'm sure), and I wish we had seen more of Avi and Pete together at the end. Still, the emphasis on atonement and new beginnings is lovely....more

I could have liked this a lot better, if it would have been longer. Just felt rushed.

In some places this book made me uncomfortable, but it was a good story.

Kind of weird. This is not normally the type of hero I like at all. But, I did find myself liking him eventually. I hope there will be more in this series as I do like like reading about unusual, imperfect characters.

It was good. Didn't read 'Learning from Isaac' however I didn't need to read it to really enjoy this book. I suspect I will go and read Learning from Isaac when I need to get my rent boy fix.

As Dev Bentham, I write contemporary gay romance. My characters are flawed and damaged adult men who may not even know they’re looking for true love, but when they meet their bershert, their true love, their lives are transformed. My stories are set in the real world where gay men have gay friends, families who do or don’t accept them, personal histories they’re not necessarily proud of and a myri...more
