This popular author has very poor theology and it comes out in his book. I find it offensive when he makes up stories about historical figures without any supporting evidence and gives these historical figures characteristics and traits that are clearly negative. Slander would be the charges against him if he wrote about anyone alive today and said such made up things. I'm sure the author thinks he is just making the book interesting, or assisting him in his point. Still, if I wanted to make...more

Alright, so I said that Witch of Portobello was not the best book in the world in my review, and yet, I found that I was still thinking about it days later. So, perhaps it was better than I thought...

I picked up The Fifth Mountain awhile after. I am glad that I read Witch first because I may have written the author off as a Judeo-Christian propagandist otherwise. I now understand that the religion of these heros does not matter. Religion is the tool to test the conviction of these stra...more

Another masterpiece from Paulo Coelho. I was reminded of nikos Kazansakis' Last Tempation through much of this, from the point of view of a man with a destiny unable to come to terms with it, constantly tortured by his self doubt until, eventually, through his trials and circumstances, coming to a deep personal understanding of his true destiny. More difficult to read than the Alchemist but not any less profound in the lessons it has wrapped in the text. I always come away from the authors books...more

This is an historical novel based on the biblical character of Elijah. It is meant to be very profound and spiritual but I felt like it missed something. The character's are shallow and there isn't much depth to the story. Like a lot of Paulo Coelho's books, there is a lot of advice about how to live life and how to find / interact with God. If you like Paulo Coelho's philosophy in general you may like the book. I find some of his books can be preachy, elitist and self-righteous and this i...more

This allegory tells the story of the Biblical Elijah -- the prophet and sage who crossed Jezebel but eventually restored Israel to greatness.

After reading an interview with Coelho in last April's THE NEW YORKER, I can't say as I'm a huge fan of his. However, there are elements of this book, and The Alchemist that offer soothing promises of hope, forgiveness, and direction that give comfort. For that, I am glad that his books are international best-sellers.

The style of his writing is ...more

The story is based on the story of Elijah from the Judeo-Christian Bible (1 Kings chapters 17-19). The focus is on Elijah's time in Zarephath (in this book named Akbar). Much has been added to the simple Bible story by Coelho, including Elijah witnessing the sacking of Akbar by the Assyrians, Elijah's journey up the Fifth Mountain itself (said to be the dwelling place of Baal), and Elijah's falling in love with the widow to whom God sent him.

This story may be considered religious in focus, d...more

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping ...more

The first Paulo Coelho book I ever read was "The Alchemist," and I was immediately obsessed with it. It remains, to this day, one of my all-time favorite books. When I lived in Brazil, I bought 8 Paulo Coelho books in Portuguese, their original language. I enjoyed a couple of them, listed on this site, and was disappointed by the rest. I got "The Fifth Mountain" in English, and was disappointed by it as well. I just couldn't get into it. While I respect Coelho's talent,...more

recommends it for: anyone who's a little lost and needs to learn that it's ok and that it will pass
Although a biblical tale, I found the story to be universal in its telling of a person's painful path to finding his or her destiny. Elijah's was a trial of faith both with himself and with what I like to think of as the forces of the universe (err, he would say God) to find out what his life should move towards.

As a 24 year old trying to make the right life choices and realizing I don't have most of the answers to this crazy and continuous pop quiz called life, I completely related!

The point of this book, is how person tries to find his/her personal legend. It's a little bit different from The Alchemist that focused on how person tries to find his/her destiny. In the Fifth Mountain, person has been destined to be "someone." He/she has role to be fulfilled.

The story of this novel is actually taken from the Bible. About Elia (maybe Ilyas in Islam). Elia denied his destiny as messager...

Buku ini bercerita tentang pergumulan Elia, salah satu nabi Israel "melawan" kehendak Tuhan. Terasa lebih riil dibandingkan versi Alkitabnya, bagaimana bahkan seorang nabi pun sering bimbang mengambil keputusan dan tetap punya rasa takut, meskipun dia orang pilihan Tuhan, yang pastinya terberkati.

Meski masih sedikit bingung, buku ini sedikit membantu memahami "why bad things happen to good people".
