The Far Kingdoms...a place of bright sunlight surrounded by dark, deadly wilderness. A place where the princes and magicians were kind and wise beyond all imagination. A place where wine and song were always sweet, every purse was fat with gold, and every heart at ease. The Far Kingdoms...said to lie in the distant east, across the straits of the Narrow Sea, beyond the ...more

The son of a prosperous merchant gets himself into trouble with the locals, and decides that it’s time to depart on his “Finding,” the journey every merchant’s son undertakes in order to make his own name in the world. His will be no ordinary voyage, however. Accompanied by an older, stronger and magically skilled companion, Amalric seeks the legendary, undiscovered Far Kingdoms.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. It is well-written, and it has lots of what every good adventure should have: danger,

This is the first book in the series about the family of Antero. It has everything: travel, battles, discovery, magic and sorcery. The novel is dedicated to the youngest son of the family - Amalric Emilie Antero, his adventure and search for the Far kingdoms. Together with Janos Grey Cloak he embarks on a journey, where they await the mass of the dangers, enemies, encounters, successes and failures, love, the test of friendship. This work is for those who craves adventure, loves stories about ...more

An ok read. There were times when the detail of clothing or food was a bit too much, then areas of the story where I would have liked more detail was rushed through. Different, but as a reading addict, I enjoyed the read.

Very well crafted story line. Sometimes poor grammar and word usage, but overall fairly well written. I wonderful escape from the everyday into a magical world of good, evil and somwhere in between!

The single best fantasy adventure I've read so far.
Evocative descriptions, thoroughly believable characters, and just the right details to make your mind hurtle the vast distances to places that only exist in dreams.

I feel the author managed to cram into one book more than others can in a series. Tragic friendship and loyalty, a slide into madness, ambition and dreams, this book has it all. The sense of adventure should make this essential reading for boys.”

Very well written fantasy story about human spirit, friendship, incredible adventures! Though the end is really sad... It actually was a part of my inspiration about my second book "The Opposite of Magic"...

The system of magic is original. The main character is a dumb, oversexed ape who lives on luck alone, and he can be annoying. The story drags on a bit, but the ending is worth the wait.

This was one of the first "adult" books I ever read and I loved it! For my fifth grade mind, the fantasy was unbelievable and I was absorbed by the story.

The story was just a bit slow, and dull. Got interesting in the very end...but, drug on to get there...took me over a month to finish.

First book I have read by this pair of authors. It's first one in a series but it didn't really grab me enough to track down the others.

Best book I've read in awhile. This author has excellent grammar and writing skills that can pull you into the world Orissa and beyond to the far kingdoms.

An entertaining fantasy adventure with likeable characters (vocal on gender equality, even!) and an interesting plot. Highly recommended.
