The Falls was my first ever Joyce Carol Oates novel. I've read a few of her stories over the years, though none of them particularly stand out in my mind. I have vague but admiring memories of what is probably her most famous short story, frequently anthologized, called "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" I know she's considered something of an icon in the fiction world, so I took that into this experience, expecting what's generally called "literary fiction," and exp...more

I read The Falls for book club. I was looking forward to reading it, given its roots in historical events and my past reading of her novel, We Were the Mulvaneys. The Falls was, hands down, the worst novel I have read for years. If I could, I would give it 1/4 of a star. The first few hundred pages are horrid: adjective after adjective describing nothing. The characters are boring, generally unbelievable, and have no depth. To her credit, Joyce Carol Oates offers the reader moments of promise: d...more

Synopsis
Widowed on her wedding night when her new husband, a young minister and latent homosexual, throws himself into the falls, Ariah Littrell, the plain, awkward daughter of a minister, henceforth considers herself damned. Her bleak future becomes miraculously bright when Dirk Burnaby, a handsome, wealthy bon vivant with an altruistic heart, falls in love with the media-dubbed Widow-Bride. Their rapturous happiness is shadowed only by Ariah's illogical conviction over the years that Dirk wi...more

Joyce Carol Oates has become quite a name in the fiction world. I thought it was high time that I read one of her works. Unfortunately, my first foray was The Falls. Neither the characters, plot, nor writing left me particularly enthralled. Nevertheless it was a readable novel, something to occupy my time. The main character is Ariah who becomes a widow on her honeymoon when her husband commits suicide by jumping in to Niagara Falls. Through this misfortune another man becomes obsessed with...more

first read Oates in a Modern American Lit class in college, and have read several of her novels and short stories since then with varying degrees of enjoyment. This one is an interesting study of a family that seems trapped in an uncontrollable downward spiral. It involves two suicides committed at Niagara Falls, one near suicide, and the exposure of the Love Canal contamination near the Falls. In brief, a woman marries a preacher, who commits suicide the day after their wedding. She then marri...more

I wavered between three and four stars on this...When I learned that my bookgroup had chosen a JC Oates book, I was not thrilled: years ago I'd slogged through one of her books—title now escapes me—and been so annoyed by her style that I never read another.

But I had a couple of long plane flights and so I figured I might manage it. It turned out to be a very compelling read: Oates' verbosity still annoyed me and there were passages I skimmed, but the saga was intriguing and I kept going...more

This was my second Joyce Carol Oates after reading We Were the Mulvaneys. I didn't enjoy this one as much, but it's still well worth reading. I lived in the Buffalo Niagara area for 12 years, so I enjoyed all of the local color in this novel. In addition, a good deal of this story concerns the very early developments in the Love Canal case. I took a sociology class in college from a professor who wrote a book about the homeowner's group that formed in the wake of the lawsuits from a sociolog...more

Wow. I don't even know where to begin. This was a hard book to put down, especially for the last half or so. Many interesting characters populate this book and once the events of their lives start unfolding (and their lives start unraveling), the story just gets more compelling. There's a lot to discuss, themes, phrases, and images that are repeated through the book and how they take on new meaning as the story changes. How the characters change (or don't), and the role of fate in the stor...more

this is the first of Joyce Carol Oates books I've read..several people have recommended her, and I decided to finally give her a try. I wasn't thrilled with this book..I found it rather slow and dull in parts, but overall the work she has created is worthy of praise.

The story is set around Niagra Falls and tells the story of one woman and her family. The Falls is a story of survival, of betrayal, of love, of adversity, of forgiveness, of doubt and of so much more. Its a complexly woven ta...more

This is a masterful work. Oates is at the top of her form here. Mesmerizing. It's as though she's channeling something other worldly in "The Falls." Her characters are finely wrought. A sense of doom pervades the work, yet the ending surprises, delights. I have learned from reading Oates that as an author one has to take risks, maddening risks and not worry about the outcome. She has a favorite saying from Hitchcock, "It's only a movie, let's not go too deeply into these thi...more

Well, even though I love ol' Oatesy, this was a tough one to get through. Unfortunately, the novel was practically a Bible in length, which made me feel like I was climbing a mountain as I dragged myself through it. Perhaps the only real problem with this book was the lack of a good editor because the plot and overall story was very compelling and the heart of it was tragic and beautiful. But the story lagged quite a bit at times, and I found the main character exceedingly difficult to identi...more

A typically ambitious and satisfying novel from Ms. Oates. I really like books in which location or setting becomes a key character in the story (see the hotel in King's The Shining; Columbia in Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, etc.), and Niagara Falls certainly takes on a life of its own in this story. The other thing I appreciate is that the main character, Ariah, is actually kind of unlikeable, yet you sympathize with her. And that is a tricky thing for an author to accomplish, but...more

This is a self-important book by a self-important author. The characters were unbelievable, the dialogue in many situations was contrived, and cliches were peppered throughout this novel. It was much longer than it should have been, as the stories within the book were poorly connected. Many of the smaller stories were not needed to keep the story line going, and in the end, I had a hard time caring for anybody in the book. Many questions raised in the book were left unanswered, but I couldn'...more

I could not get into this book. It seemed too much a cliche of the dysfunctional family--forced marriage of gay priest to a women who disgusts him, gay man jumps into the falls on wedding night, tragic widow searches for husband's battered corpse, hunky bachelor falls head over heels for the strange red-head, hunky bachelor has odd relationship with his vindictive mommy dearest, who is obsessed with her botched face-lift...that's where I left off and couldn't see the point of going further. Once again, I loved the experience of reading Joyce Carol Oates. "The Falls" is beautifully written -- haunting, engrossing, fascinating. The story revolves around a family whose lives have been shaped by tragedy, against the backdrop of the powerful and mythical Niagara Falls and the historical event of Love Canal, one of the most infamous hazardous waste sites in American history. The story explores several very complicated, fascinating people, and themes relating to love, motherhood...more

I picked up this book because we are planning to visit Niagara Falls in September on our way back from New York City, and the title caught my eye. I particularly enjoyed the first half and last few pages of the book, but the middle really lost my interest. It almost tried to "get into the heads" of a few too many characters. Ariah, the main female character, was also not at all likeable, leaving me feeling detached from her troubles. I enjoyed the writing style and the poetic descr...more

Since I was born in Niagara Falls I enjoyed hearing familiar places named. I wonder how much research she did, tho. I will have to get a hard copy from the library to look up some names she used since I was listening to it on CD. It seems she was calling Grand Island 'Isle Grand' or something. I'm not sure where that came from or whether or not there was a 911 service in place in Niagara county in the late 70s--I rather doubt that.
I did not really like the story much, but like that the kids...more

Although the class action lawsuit was interesting, the true story lies with Ariah and her self-fulfilling prophecy. It's heart-breaking to see how she's slowly driving everyone she loves away from her, and it's also heartbreaking to see the impact of her mental instability on her three children. I think what's most upsetting is the fact that many women seem to convince themselves of infidelity when, in fact, there is none, and don't allow themselves to enjoy what they do have because they've con...more
