This short novel reminds me of the plays of Martin McDonagh - the tone is the blackest of humour and the story, a quest by a young Irishman for his father in Wales, is one of impossible violence. Elements of Welsh and Irish folktales play a part in the narrative and anyone who has seen the Welsh coalfields after the death of the industry will recognise the scathing portait of a town that has become a dump.
