Polycentric Monarchies offers a good insight into the many opportunities of an historiography of the early modern world that goes beyond the anachronistic reading of the past through a national or at least proto-national prism. The contributions to this volume, which treat about different parts of the Spanish and Portuguese monarchies in Europe, America and Asia, show each in their own manner the value of an approach that takes into consideration connectivity as well as local contextualization. ...more
