Super like! Particularly: the sajak, the padded-shouldered jackets, the long-haired 80s rock fans and poets, the silhouette of Mat Som's dad when he's visiting his kampung, Wan Faridah's language, the ais kacang device on pg 157. Lat is a treasure. I'm only sorry I didn't come to his work sooner.

Great comic by Lat, about a character caught constantly caught between different aspects of contemporary Malaysian society. Poignang and humourous, with touches of nostalgia.

MAT SOM

Recommends it for: autobiographical comic fans
It might be a bit of a forced comparison, but after reading this and his autobiographical Kampung Boy, I couldn't help but think of Kuala Lumpur writer/illustrator Lat as a sort of male Malaysian Lynda Barry.

His stories are simple and not over-thought, but the heartfelt illustration and straight-forward narrative emphasizes the whimsy and sadness of everyday events in unexceptional lives.

Legendary.
Lat never disappoints.
I think the translator did a poor job in the English (blue cover) version though.
Seemed like word for word translation.
Among others: "If it is fated, fish in the sea and tamarind on land can get together". Really?
Can't he/she find a similar existing English equivalent to the "Asam di darat" Malay saying?

the geniuses of Dato' Lat... This is a good
comic novel 'Mat Som'... Although the i never
watched the movie depicted from the novel, but the
book really brought me to that late 80's era. The mini
bus, pyan habib, a samad ismail and more. The thing
is that Lat beautifully blends the history behind the scene

For some weird reason I find the following book quite sad and melancholic. It does have some fun moments. But the theme of a village boy coming to the city and trying to find his dream is distressing.

The cartoons of Lat is refreshing as usual. The honesty and feelings generated within the boxes is quite unusual.

Funny and fun. The problem with the English translated version is all the fonts have been changed to normal Serif fonts instead of using Lat's "handwriting" and that made some of the speech bubbles look awkward. I hope they'll publish a new English edition of the book.

It was fun. I really like the part with Pyan Habib. Maybe ill buy the Malay version too next time. Geram je baca sajak Aku yang dah di-translated.

I love Lat. As a Malaysian, I grew up with his comics. Mat Som tells the familiar tale of a small town boy (from Perak), moving to the big smoke (KL) for work as a budding journalist. I won't reveal more. Just get it. It is available in English.

i always love LAT, but his best work is still Kampong Boy. i bought this as my first pocket size comic at Kota Kinabalu and it's easy to carry along. his 'ugly cartoon' type is so funny, yet copied a lot in the SEA region. i wish him a long life just to read more of him.

Buku yang aku beli di Jalan TAR, Kuala Lumpur. Masa tu aku kanak-kanak ribena lagi tapi, entah kenapa aku tertarik dengan buku ni. Masih teringat yang aku masa tu memang sadis, aku baca buku ini berulang kali tanpa faham maksud sebenar buku ni. Tapi, memang aku suka sangat belek buku ni.
