here are those books that you think "Hmm it was pretty good," "Then there are those which you think "Wow can this book get any better?" This was that kind of book, with every turn of the page you were more and more engulfed into the story it was extremely powerful, that it had this pull to it where you just couldn't put down the book unless you read about 60 pages or more. It literally kept me awake all night long I wouldn't go to bed unless I was satisfied with the number of pages read in that...more

One of the most enjoyable books I have read in quite a while, this book was remarkably easy for me to get into. I loved the characters, in particular, the bad guy characters! I often laughed out loud at the imbecilic stunts and conversations. There would be all these grand plans that would never work out quite as expected. Just too funny! But, the reason it resonated so well with me is because I have known people with similar traits, attitudes, and quirks that could be substituted in a few of th...more

I think I've been reading too many chick lit/family drama books lately(a downside of the books coming up for review and giveaway here, LOL) , as it took me til about the fourth chapter to really get into this book! It may have also been the 'Three Stooges' effect of two of the main characters, Carl and Junior- I've never been a fan of theirs, so I just wasn't seeing the humor as much. Once the story really got underway, the author found his groove and it settled into a pretty good crime fiction...more

I think what sold this book for me was the cover. I hadn't even read the synopsis and just signed up for the tour. I love books with cowboys and so I liked this and was eager to read it. After that I obviously had to know what the book was about and it didn't sound half bad. Not to mention the title sounded really mysterious.

Nick, a private investigator whose divorce had made his life hard, was asked to investigate a missing case, the Reverand's daughter. As he takes the job, he finds it leads h...more

It took me fifty pages to become invested in this story....I think it was the first laugh out loud moment that hooked me and I ended up loving what I initially thought I wouldn't care for. The first pages were building the story pages and were indeed necessary. It was there we first met Carl, (a rather dim witted, farm boy, headed for his hiding spot) that he finds occupied by young black lovers. When it becomes obvious that someone is watching the young lovers, the male takes off after the perve...more

At first when I started reading the book I thought I am not sure if it would keep my interest. After I started reading a few pages I couldn't put it down. Even though this is a crime novel, it was a bit humorous. The charters were well described and the story held my interest.

Poor Junior no matter how hard he tried things just kept backfiring on him and his nephew. They were trying to hide a toxic waste dump on the farm that Junior owns, but when a couple wondered on the property they thought t...more

I started off the book without reading the synopsis...So I imagined the book to be about a kidnapped lovers who would find love and life, but then came a lonely private investigator Nick Sibelius..He sets on investigating the missing couple hired by the girl's father..Things get on an interesting turn with the next character Junior with his weird bad luck of people dying around him., including his who dies in front of him stepping on some farm equipment, he kills a drunken trespassing his proper...more

Toxic is more than standard crime-fiction fare. First, it’s funny. Not grab-your-gut-and-roll-over-laughing funny, but a comfortable shade of subtle, light humor that makes you crack a smile or snort every few pages.

Hacker doesn’t present rural Texas with stereotypical disdain. He treats Central Texas like a relative, perhaps like a well-intentioned half-brother you love but also know is nuts. You love him, craziness and all. If you’ve ever spent time in Texas, and love it like I do, you’ll catc...more

Don't give up on this book. The first good amount of the book is needed to build up the story and to give you insight into the land and lifestyle. But it gets better. Just keep reading. This is a great book to spend a lazy afternoon reading. It has just enough light humor to keep you light hearted and keep reading. The Mystery and suspense keeps you guessing and the characters will have you feeling like one of the story.

Such an interesting read. I do not know which character I enjoyed more, Nick, Marylou, Junior or Barry. The author has a great way with words and hooking the reader. If you are looking for a book that has lots of twist, turns and one character that is always on the receiving end of bad luck then this is it.

Thanks for such an interesting read Richard.

The bunnies and I give this book 4 carrots.

Loved it. Can't wait for the next book.

Hacker has a great sense of humor, and a talent for description and character development. I also found the storyline engaging; a decent man working through his personal demons while helping a man find his missing daughter, uncovering more criminal enterprises in the process. “Sex, murder and toxic waste: nowhere else but Texas.” It’s a solid, entertaining read.
