After reading the author's series regarding a villa of reduced circumstances, the finer points of sausage dogs and Portugese irregular verbage, I was excited to read something else by him. This is a book of short stories concerning what else? Dating. The first story met my expectations but the others were just...okay. The titular story was truly weird and disappointing. A review on the book said it was reminiscent of Roald Dahl (I expect the reviewer meant his 'Skin' novel, not Charlie and th...more

I really enjoyed these stories. They are unpredictable, quirky, and oddly reminiscent of Roald Dahl (as the blurb on the front cover proclaims). The pacing and buildup of tension in the stories is superb, and the endings are always just perfect. I would never have guessed the author based on his other writings -- the feel of "Heavenly Date" is very different from AMS's other writings. I highly recommend these stories.

Delicacies..
Have fallen in love with his famous Mma Ramotswe, I read this book. Becomes a fan of dating and flirting, I was tickled by the title. And yes, he told the dating tale very interesting. Although the setting is scattered all over the world, once again, the way he explained Africa was overrated. I could fell in love once again.
My favorite was the Angelic date.

This is a collection of short love stories. I read this around the same time as Adverbs which is a collection of loosely interwoven love stories. I much preferred this book.

This is a collection of weird short stories. He is a good writer, just picks some odd plots. Read this if you are highly tolerant of the avant garde.

Rightly compared to Roald Dahl's "adult stories," this collection contains some good writing, but a bit darker than Smith's other series.

I love McCall Smiths other books but including the pedophiles story in this collection crossed all sorts of lines for me.

I don't normally love short stories and hadn't read any of the author's other books, but it made me want to do so.

A very nice collection of short stories. My favorites were the ones about the fat people and the final story.

I did this one as an audiobook. I loved some of the stories, and not others. My favorite was "Fat Date".

I didn't like this book at all. I love this author so I was shocked that this was his work. Strange stories.

Very different from the other AMS books I've read. Well written but not terribly entertaining or engaging.

Not as good as others I've read by him. Though, not a bad way to pass the time... :)
