For Hutch, shortstop has always been home. It?s where his father once played professionally, before injuries relegated him to watching games on TV instead of playing them. And it?s where Hutch himself has always played and starred. Until now. The arrival of Darryl ?D-Will? Williams, the top shortstop prospect from Florida since A-Rod, means Hutch is displaced, in more ways...more

The Big Field by Mike Lupica is about a boy Hutch Hutchinson and his love for baseball. His dad also was a really good baseball player, but got his dreams crushed when he found out he wasn't going to make it to the pros. Hutch feels that his dad doesn't care about him because he doesn't have time to show up to his games, but his dad wants to teach him to appreciate the game more and to relax a little. Hutch cannot get along with a kid on his team named Darrel who is the star shortstop. Throughou...more

I read the book The Big Field by Mike Lupica. this book was about a high school boy named Hutch that was a really good baseball player. He plays shortstop till a boy named Daryl that is better than Hutch steals his spot at shortstop. This was a big deal for Hutch because his dad was a pro baseball player and Hutches dad will not come to his sons games till his son earns his respect for the game.

I liked this book because it talked about his struggels and how he overcomes obsticles and works harder...more

I am really getting into this listening to audio books! I just listened to my first Mike Lupika book (embarrassed to admit), The Big Field, and loved every single word that the voice of Christopher Evan Weber spoke. I guess you could call me a sports fan, especially baseball. Every spring I listen to the sports talk about the predictions for the Colorado Rockies, and although this has been a miserable year, I am still watching games, or listening to them on the radio, when I'm not listening to a...more

The Big Field by Mike Lupica, was an outstanding book. This book was about a fourteen-year-old baseball player, in help with his team, are trying to live the dream, making their way to their American Legion summer baseball championship. I loved this book mainly because I love to play and watch baseball. The main character’s name is Hutch, the superstar on their team. Until, a new shortstop comes on the team, and pushes Hutch out of the way.
This American Legion team plays in Florida, where the ki...more

This book made me think of father and son relationship. In the story Hutch and his father have a bad one. Hutch's father was once was a huge baseball star, but when he made it out of college he was told he wasn't good enough. Hutch is in love with baseball, but his father wants nothing to d with it and especially if it involves Hutch because he doesn't want him to get hurt like he was. Hutch feels as if his father ignores him and doesn't even like him. All hutch wanted was his father's acceptanc...more

Mike Lupica The Big Leagues was about a boy named Hutch Hutchinson and he has always played shortstop as a kid, but when he went to a new and older team things changed for him. The kid on this team is a little better than him and he plays shortstop as well so Hutch moves over to second base. It takes a little bit for him to get used to.
He worked really hard and gets better. There was another big problem in this book and that is with him and his dad. They were close before but everything kind o...more

The Big Field is amazing! Mike put everything into play perfectly. This book is a great sports book!

Hutch, the main character, is fascinated with baseball, he learned everything he knows from his dad. his dad was a former star but got heart broken by the sport he loves. At times Hutch and his dad go through real tough situations, but they get through them as father and son.

Hutch and his team go all around Florida playing for the championship. Hutch and his teammate argue and fight but play th...more

The Big Field I think is a really good book if you like to watch or play baseball. The main character's goes by the name of Hutch. His legion baseball team is trying to become the youngest legion team to win the state legion championship. There is one thing that Hutch is a little disappointed about, he is normally a shortstop, but he was moved over to second because a kid named Darryl joined the team. In a game just before the championship game Hutch hit two home runs and one of them was a walk...more

The big field was a good book and I think other people should read it. This book is about a little kid named Hutch who really wants to play baseball everyday of his life. His father once played professional ball and that is where Hutch wanted to end up. But the arrival of Darryl Williams {the top prospect from Florida comes in town means Hutch has to move to 2nd base. With the summer league championship on the line, just how far is Hutch willing to bend to be a good teammate? Ever since being mo...more

The Big Field is paced a lot like a baseball game. The first hundred or so pages was a no-hitter. In fact, there were a few things in the writing that even turned me off. If I were at a game like that, I would have gone and gotten a hot dog or something. But around page 126, I suddenly realized that something was happening and I was hooked in the drama. The characters became real to me. Their thoughts, feelings, words, and actions seemed to be very accurate portrayals of how real people would de...more

This book was great. The biggest reason being, that I love baseball. Which if i dont pass this semester i wont get to play. haha. not good really. Anyways this book is about a kid named hutch who is really good at baseball. He really is a shortstop in his mind and he has the build and arm for it, but a star player deicdeds to play for his legion team which means he cant play shortstop but gets stuck at second base. He hates this naturally. Well it has been a dream season even with him playing se...more

Keith "Hutch" Hutchenson is a fourteen year old who LOVES baseball. He play short stop and loves it because it keeps him in the middle of the action. His dream is to attend a private baseball school up north and make it to the major leagues. His father was once a triple A player had his heart broken by the game. In the past he was Hutch's biggest fan, but now does little to encourage Hutch in his dreams of making it big in baseball.Hutch is the team captain and takes his baseball very seriously....more

The most exciting and entertaining baseball book, The Big Field by Mike Lupica is by far one of the best books I have ever read. The big field has different topics to it. For example, one of the topics is the main character, Hutch Hutchinson, who has a lot of social problems like friends and family while he has to guide his baseball team to victory.
The book reminded me of myself when I play baseball. Hutch always wanted the ball to come to him it was a close game and he make that all-star play....more

The Big Field is an amazing book. It is about Hutch Hutcherson who is a fanatic about baseball. He has played it since he was younger. Hutch's dad used to play baseball. He stopped because of an injury and now all he does is sit on the couch watching baseball on the T.V. Hutch's favorite position is short stop, and Hutch is the star player. Until Darrell comes along and takes Hutch's spot at short stop. Hutch has to be moved to second base. His coach says "...more

I thought that this book was pretty well written and i enjoyed it very much! Hutch seemed to connect to me in many ways. We both love baseball very much! It is an amazing sport. I felt bad for him though, because his da NEVER talked to him. That is the thing I am lucky to have. But sometimes he talks too much...Anyways, Cody seemed to be an awesome friend that joked around a lot and never really got to mad. He only did once. It was nice to see him and his mom really try to make Hutch feel better...more

Fans of Mike Lupica sports novels will be doing the wave in celebration of his new book The Big Field. Centered on a teen baseball team, Lupica tells the story of Hutch Hutchenson a fourteen year old who LOVES baseball. His father was once a triple A player but had his heart broken by the game. In the past he was Hutch’s biggest fan, but now does little to encourage Hutch in his dreams of making it big in baseball. Hut...more

For Keith Hutchenson, shortstop has always been his position. His dad was a star shortstop for his team and almost made the big leagues. Hutch plays American Legion ball for his team in Florida and is the star of his team until one season, a new star player joins the team. He is the biggest prospect to come out of FLorida since A-Rod and is only 14! The players name is Darryl Williams, nicknamed "D-Will." The problem is D-Will's position is shortstop and ends up chasing Hutch out into second bas...more

I struggled to get into this book because of all the baseball vocabulary that I don't understand. I am going to have one of my baseball playing students read it to see what he thinks of it. I like the characters, but I felt Darryl and Cody should have been more dimensional. They were a bit flat and undeveloped. I liked Hutch's character. He showed courage and honor, but he wasn't all good. He also showed his temper. I like a character who also can show his faults. I worry that some of Lupica's r...more

"The Big Field" by Mike Lupica is a great book. I enjoyed almost everything about it. I like it because it is so easy to relate to because many things that happen in the story have happened to me. For example, through out the years I have always played shortstop but at the start of middle school a boy transferred to our school and he was better than me at shortstop. Also, I liked the book because it is so realistic. I can see this actually happening in real life and I like books that are realist...more

This book was well written and if I was a baseball fan, it probably would have earned 4 or 5 stars...but I'm not a baseball fan. Even so, the main character was believable and likable and you really wanted things to turn out well for him...to win the baseball championship, figure out the complex relationship with his dad, and relate to Darryl. I liked that while it really did show the joys of baseball (I mean, honestly, if it could almost make ME like baseball, then it was able to transmit that...more

I am on page 23 of the book, The Big Field by Mike Lupica. Although I'm not that far into the story, I am really, really likeing this book!!!!!! In the first few chapters, Hutch's baseball team wins then play-off game, they will get to move on and hopefully get to go to the leage championships.

I predict that Hutch's team will get to go to the leage championships because they have some really good players. Also, the book is called The Big Field so I think that that means that they will g...more

The book that I am going to tell you about is called The Big Field by Mike Lupica.

The first thing that I am going to tell you about is my favorite part of the book. My favorite part was when Hutch and his team go to the championship and Darrell [ Hutchs teammate ] hits the game winning homerun to end the game. The reason I liked that part was because 1. He pretty much deserved it and 2. They won the championship. So that was an exiting part of the book.

The second thing that I want to tell you...more

Summary:
When Hutch a kid who is talented and loves baseball has to move to second base to make room for talented Darryl, it causes problems for everyone.

Passage: page: 230 Paragraph: 1-2
"Hey" Hutch shot him a quick look. Darryl said, "It comes to us, we got this, right?" And somehow Hutch knew exactly what he meant without asking. Just knew. Somehow, In the last game they were finally on the same wavelength. They were never going to be friends. They might never play together after tonight.

Lupica's Heat was well received, and I know many boys who've loved it, but I think this book is the better story, better written. The theme of a boy (Hutch) who craves his father's approval and attention dovetails nicely with the baseball story, and the addition of a team mate who is supremely gifted but doesn't love the game who takes over Hutch's spot on the team works well. This will provide a satisfying read to readers who want lots of sports action, but it also packs plenty of emotional pun...more

This was a good book for people who really love play by play baseball. I do not. The underlying story was good and well written--about a young baseball player and his difficult relationship with his dad who played ball as a youth and young man. The exchanges between dad and son seemed realistic as did the mom's attempts at intervention. The story has a nice resolution in the end and if you really like playing or watching baseball you would probably like the whole book better than I did. Some of...more

This book is about a boy named Hutch and how he loves playing baseball and how is father used to play it. Unfortunately for his dad he loved baseball, but it broke his heart and he never goes to Hutch's game. Until now. The arrival of Darryl “D-Will” Williams, the top shortstop prospect from Florida since A Rod, means Hutch is displaced, in more ways than one. Second base feels like second fiddle, and when he sees his father giving fielding tips to D-Will the same father who can’t be bothered to...more
