Mike Lupica is one of the best sport's book author in my mind. This book "The Big Field" is about a boy named Hutch Hutchinson, a star shortstop. but when a new shortstop comes to there team. Hutch has to move over to second base because the new kid is a little bit better than him. I read the book The Big Field by Mike Lupica. this book was about a high school boy named Hutch that was a really good baseball player. He plays shortstop till a boy named Daryl that is better than Hutch steals his spot at shortstop.This was a big deal for Hutch because his dad was a pro baseball player and Hutches dad will not come to his sons games till his son earns his respect for the game.

I am really getting into this listening to audio books! I just listened to my first Mike Lupika book (embarrassed to admit), The Big Field, and loved every single word that the voice of Christopher Evan Weber spoke. This book was about a fourteen-year-old baseball player, in help with his team, are trying to live the dream, making their way to their American Legion summer baseball championship. This book made me think of father and son relationship. In the story Hutch and his father have a bad one. Hutch's father was once was a huge baseball star, but when he made it out of college he was told he wasn't good enough. The Big Field is paced a lot like a baseball game. The first hundred or so pages was a no-hitter. In fact, there were a few things in the writing that even turned me off. The most exciting and entertaining baseball book, The Big Field by Mike Lupica is by far one of the best books I have ever read. The big field has different topics to it. For example, one of the topics is the main character, Hutch Hutchinson, who has a lot of social problems like friends and family while he has to guide his baseball team to victory.

I thought that this book was pretty well written and i enjoyed it very much! Hutch seemed to connect to me in many ways. We both love baseball very much! It is an amazing sport. I felt bad for him though, because his da NEVER talked to him. That is the thing I am lucky to have. But sometimes he talks too much...Anyways, Cody seemed to be an awesome friend that joked around a lot and never really got to mad. He only did once. I struggled to get into this book because of all the baseball vocabulary that I don't understand. I am going to have one of my baseball playing students read it to see what he thinks of it. I like the characters, but I felt Darryl and Cody should have been more dimensional. They were a bit flat and undeveloped. I liked Hutch's character. "The Big Field" by Mike Lupica is a great book. I enjoyed almost everything about it. I like it because it is so easy to relate to because many things that happen in the story have happened to me. For example, through out the years I have always played shortstop but at the start of middle school a boy transferred to our school and he was better than me at shortstop. This book was well written and if I was a baseball fan, it probably would have earned 4 or 5 stars...but I'm not a baseball fan. Lupica's Heat was well received, and I know many boys who've loved it, but I think this book is the better story, better written. The theme of a boy (Hutch) who craves his father's approval and attention dovetails nicely with the baseball story, and the addition of a team mate who is supremely gifted but doesn't love the game who takes over Hutch's spot on the team works well. This will provide a satisfying read to readers who want lots of sports action, but it also packs plenty of emotional pun...more
This was a good book for people who really love play by play baseball. I do not. The underlying story was good and well written--about a young baseball player and his difficult relationship with his dad who played ball as a youth and young man. The exchanges between dad and son seemed realistic as did the mom's attempts at intervention.
