Dutch Sneakers and Fleakeepers: 14 More Stories

In the tradition of Edward Lear, Calef Brown has fashioned fourteen nonsense poems so wacky that both young and old will be unable to suppress their laughter. Invented words and sounds and their visual counterparts create both an audible and a visual feast. This is the kind of silliness children (and many adults) relish.

Another fun collection of poems from Calef Brown with quirky themes and zany rhyming. Kids will get a kick out of eccentric characters like Donut Beatles and Runaway Waffles. The illustrations--just as in his other books--borrow from art movements (e.g, Cubism, Dadaism) but are infused with child-friendly vivid colors and drawn simply enough to keep kids' interest without overwhelming them. Older kids and adults may find this book a bit too simple; the real charm of this book lies in reading it ...more

I love the description for the book and what to expect.

Welcome to the world of
Dutch Sneakers and Fleekeepers.
Where a Runaway Waffle makes a
quick getaway and Donut Beetles
march slowly across Sugar Beach.
Sir Dance-a-lot cuts a knightly rug
and Little Ned itches for days.
You can groove to the sounds of a
Magic Electric Guitar, ride a
Gumbubble all the way from
Nantucket to Galaxy seven, and
meet one Mytserious Fish. But
keep an eye out for Pirates,
Tattlesnakes, and Seven Bad Teeth.

Another fun work by Calef Brown. I wonder where he comes up with some of his ideas. The illustrations are so funny!

To whet your appetite...
"Little Ned got a rash
on the back of his neck.
He wouldn't stop scratching for days.
His grandmother gave him
a jar of strange ointment.
His mom and dad said, "It's only a phase."
The doctor's solution was simple:
a plastic adjustable cone,
to keep Ned from scratching
the back of his neck.
He just couldn't leave it alone"

This may be perfect for some but it just was not my cup of tea. I was attracted by the colorful graphics and the nonsense implied by the title. But the "stories" are really just nonsense poems with a lot of rhymes.

Calef Brown’s children's books are truly one-of-kind experiences. Part Dr. Seuss, part Shel Silverstein, and all his original folk-art creations. Not for the close-minded, and for those who except and love that which is sometimes called "weird."

Another great book from Calef Brown. His poetry and illustrations are so whimsical and easy for my son to memorize. We have a collection of all his books. Not only do our kids love to read his poems, but the adults can't get enough of them!!!

Not as good as polka bats- poetry featuring polka dotted bat poo is hard to beat when it comes to impressing a 2 and 5 yr old boy...
