Chapter Three: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered is the reason for my two star rating and yes I am biased against those who speak out against gun-control. The ludicrousness of the arguments for banning gun control overshadows the author's relatively cogent arguments for smaller government, how lowering the corporate tax rate can make the US more competitive again, and how regulations are hurting small businesses in the U.S.

I suppose as an American who has lived overseas and spent much time in

This is an excellent popular treatment of some issues in current politics and economics. One of the points made quite well is that the US is no longer one of the small-government countries in the world, but among the handful of biggest-government countries. This inevitably leads to endless malaise and crises, and must eventually lead to rampant corruption, falling incomes, and falling level of happiness. (All the same, I would like to have seen the numbers for government spending by different ...more

OK, the author is obviously criticizing the current path our government is on, but he is a Ph.D. economist who was actually on the teaching staff with Obama at the University of Chicago 15 years ago -- 10 years before Obama was elected. He knows the subject well and overwhelms the reader with complex graphs and world-wide projections. One of the more fascinating sections concerned the "airline safety ...act" of 2010 that will make air travel too expensive for all of us very soon.

This book just scratches the surface of our problems. I agree with most of the authors ideas, in theory he is generally right and he posts a lot of numbers and graphs to support his train of thought. Government spending and Entitlement programs are out of control. We continue to lose our lead in the world's economy. Our standard of living has gone down, the risk takers earned wealth is under attack, and somehow some people in government think we need to redistribute wealth to the needy and ...more

Obama is a dangerous man, With Taxes, Rules, Regulation by decree our country is fast on the road to ruin. Book has lots of graphs, which can only be understood by the designer. However other chapters very interesting.

I find it quite interesting what Lott finds as he digs deeper into the half truths and claims that drive so many people in their beliefs.
