This was my first book by Aleksandr Voinov and I really liked it :) Although, I'll do a re-read after I finish (get the nerve to actually start reading) Soldiers, I think I'll understand some things better :)

Sweeeeet!

If you read this book expecting the gut-wrenching intensity of Special Forces, this book is a whole different beast - it's more like your house pet - but if you're looking for a pick-me-up contemporary romance, which makes you want to strip the next man in a suit you meet, it's for you AND you'll get to see a mature Vadim that you'd love to tend to like that poor waiter in the book.

The story is in the point-of-view of Nikolai and while we got to see his side of the story and know his motivations, learning how a sane, loyal and good guy he is, his love/lust interest, Henri LeBeau, remained a bit out of reach. I really wanted to find a connection with him and I couldn't, but still I liked him. He was a man with something to prove, but also a man probably dissatisfied with his life. I saw a sort of desperation in his seduction - maybe desperation is too strong a word, maybe resignation, and it appealed to me a lot and I guess it appealed to Nikolai's decent chore. I think it was what prompted that incredible tenderness Nikolai couldn't help feeling and that gave emotions to their sexual encounters.

Nikolai was a bit too perfect, I think, he did all the right things, especially when compared to his sister and her vengeful email. Now I don't know at which point this becomes a spoiler. Maybe in the context of this book if you haven't read Special Forces everything is, so let's tag it. (view spoiler) There are a lot of feelings that were hinted at, but not really explored, and really, what's a romance-romance without a bit of drama?!

The corporate setting was interesting and it was done very well. I loved the contrast between Nikolai's more blue-collar origins and the corporate environment he was thrown in, this contrast between appearances and substance.

A very fine stand-alone as well as a must-read for established Special Forces fans. I would also nominate this as an excellent first male/male romance book.

Aleksandr Voinov's voice takes on a fresher, lighter tone yet remains sophisticated in this highly enjoyable romance. I've been anxiously awaiting this new look at the next generation of his Special Forces characters. While it's possible that this book was written purely to indulge his fan's wanton pleading, I honestly believe this project...more

I didn't realize how much I missed SF, especially Vadim until I picked up Gold Digger. I really think Mr. Voinov did a great job intertwining both the Nikolai/Henri and the Nikolai/Vadim storylines. At times, I also thought Nikolai was a bit too awkward and naïve about his sexuality. Considering his family dynamics, I wouldn’t have expected this. I understood the doubts. It was completely believable that Nikolai would have a problem with being intimate with a man but he seemed to dismiss his feelings far too quickly and the reason for that didn’t come through for me.

This book would have been perfect if it was a bit longer. There was a lot going on. I felt many issues needed more time to develop. Mainly, I wanted more of Nikolai dealing with (view spoiler) That was a major issue in the book and it also brought Nikolai and Vadim closer together so I think it deserved a bit more page time. Overall, I think Nikolai took things far too well. He even got over his conflict with Anya fairly quickly. I would have liked to have seen more of them.

This brings me to Vadim! I absolutely loved how Nikolai and Vadim's relationship came together. To see them develop a father/son bond was so touching and heartfelt. The time they spent together in New Zealand was priceless and filled me with so much warmth. Vadim finally opened up and became the father Nikolai needed. This was a very intense and fulfilling moment. Can you tell how I feel about Nikolai and Vadim? Ok, end of gushing.

This is a great SF spin-off especially for all you Vadim fans out there.

And I did, I really really did!

You see - I've been a lost and wondering soul since reading the cult series Special Forces. I have missed all the characters so very much. I have mourned them desperately, so I saved this novella - a spin off for when I knew I really really needed it.

First off, I must say I'm in love with the cover. So simple yet so...nice. I loved this book. Loved it. It was so refreshing after finishing Special Forces. And short! Not that it's a bad thing, but SF was super long.

I still love Nikolai. If it wasn't for Hooch I'd say he'd be right behind his father. Love all three of them. I've read some reviews where people made comments about how one minute Nikolai was straight but then he was gay and not really caring for that too much. True, but I still enjoyed the whole thing.

Katya strikes again. For someone that is so rude and mean and just a straight up bitch, she sure doesn't know how to keep things in line. Like Anya? Yes, she grew up without a father. Yes she's (view spoiler) Yes Katya is a bitch and Vadim has the means to be a real bastard if needed...but Anya is just over the top. (view spoiler) Ugh.

This was a nice change from SF and I'm really glad I held out on reading this before I finished the series. I understood Vadim and Nikolai more than I would have if I hadn't waited. It was a cute little romance and I enjoyed all of the characters other than Anya and Katya but that's to expected. I also keep pronouncing Ruslan as "Russkie." Oh my! All in all I loved this book and wouldn't mind seeing another in the future about how Nikolai and Henri are doing. (less)

I enjoyed the book more than I thought. Nikolai's story fascinated me from the beginning and I couldn't get enough.

Gold Digger is a romance but the settings are amazing. Interesting characters (I like Nikolai's boss and friend Ruslan), sensuality and intrigue – it's plain and simple fascinating! It's a real Voinov, the writing will take you right into the action and you can't stop reading.

I would classify this as one of Voinov's lesser books. It's not bad by any means, it just a little too run-of-the-mill in my opinion.

The biggest gripe that I've is that I couldn't buy the two MCs as a couple. I failed to see even a smidgen of connection between Nikolai and Henri. Sleepy. Stayed up late finishing this one, so my review may not be the most coherent or even well-written, but here we go.

It's nicely done! It comes from the world of Special Forces, but at the same time, it's very much its own story. I read Deliverance over the summer, and it wasn't nearly as flawless at mentioning characters without actually mentioning them as Gold Digger is. In that book, there were all kinds of weird little gaps that could only be explained by having read Special Forces, but...more Sleepy. Stayed up late finishing this one, so my review may not be the most coherent or even well-written, but here we go.

It's nicely done! It comes from the world of Special Forces, but at the same time, it's very much its own story. I read Deliverance over the summer, and it wasn't nearly as flawless at mentioning characters without actually mentioning them as Gold Digger is. In that book, there were all kinds of weird little gaps that could only be explained by having read Special Forces, but in this book I didn't see any of that. It also manages to avoid the dreaded infodump in bringing the reader up to speed with the characters and providing the necessary background for them. Information about the characters and where they've come from to arrive at their present point is provided of course, but it's evenly spaced throughout the book instead of in one giant coma-inducing paragraph.

My only real problem with it comes from it being a novella and not a full-length story. There's plenty in here to make it longer without it getting tedious, and cramming all of this story and plot (and there's plenty of both) into a tiny space doesn't do it any favors. The love story, for instance, gets a little rushed in that Nikolai and Henri couldn't have known each other for more than a month, but by the end marriage is mentioned as a distinct possibility? This sort of thing happens all the time in books, and especially in classic lit, but it seems strange that someone as confused as Nikolai was about his feelings (poor guy actually had me confused for a while) would settle down so quickly. I do think he and Henri genuinely liked each other, but their relationship just got squeezed into this small little space so that there wasn't much room to watch it really grow and develop. Also, I actually expected a little more emotional fallout from Nikolai finding out the truth of his origins, but that was really never the case, and everything got resolved a bit too rapidly there too.

In the end, I think I would have liked it more as a slice-of-life story instead of a story with a definite plot resolution. I would have been ok if we'd picked up with Nikolai at one point in his life and left off at another without everything feeling like it was set in stone and all the loose ends neatly tied up. I'm probably in the minority, but I wouldn't have minded the truly HFN ending, where it's still up in the air as to whether Nikolai and Henri work out, where they go together and individually from here, and whether or not Nikolai ever does experience any angst over who he truly is. I suppose if I really think about it, nothing's ever certain, but that might be getting a little too deep.

I was wondering for a while whether to give Gold Digger four stars or five. It's a really good story showing a different angle than you usually read about: the corporate world, the politics, the gold mining - and because it's a real Voinov, the different setting isn't just a ruse to make things interesting, it's a real part of the plot. I LOVED this book, but then I like almost everything Voinov writes, so that's no surprise. LOL

I thought it was sweet, interesting, and genuine. My 2 complaints:

1) It's too short! I want more! (I am greedy!)

I loved this story which despite the family tensions affecting both Nikolai and Henri and the cut throat reality of the business world has a gentle and healing tone. We have a glimpse of Vadim and his and Nikolai's delicate dance of a father/son relationship. There was a lot of family stuff woven into Nikolai's arc that is very true to the Special Forces back stories (no retcon needed :)). Gold Digger is a sweet, sensual romance in the middle of a business war.
Henri notices Nicolai who is presenting his corporation in the hope of finding a financial partnership and from then onwards launches a takeover on Nicolai’s body and heart.

I really enjoyed this one. The story was wonderful, well written like I expect from Voinov with great characters. It's much, MUCH, milder than the dark or intense Voinovs that I lust so hard after, which was perfect this time around. Nikolai Krasnorada works for a company that explores and mines gold in Armenia. Nikolai has worked for this company from the beginning and is good friends with the CEO. They realize they need help from a larger company to be successful mining this gold, and turn to LeBeau Mining in Toronto. Nikolai presents his case to the CEO of LeBeau and also his nephew, Henri. After the presentation, the CEO asks to take some time to think about the proposition, and Henri offers to show Nikolai around the city and takes him out to dinner. After a little alcohol, Henri offers Nikolai a blow job to end the evening. Nikolai has never been with a man (although he has thought about it a little) and decides why not. From here Nikolai starts to explore a sexual relationship with Henri, which by all accounts is hot. I think for someone never being with a man before, he may have fallen into it a little easy. However, my main complaint isn’t with the sex in this book, but that the sex is the only thing that Nikolai and Henri have together. I never once felt an actual romance develop. They had sex a few times and then it felt as if a HEA is just tacked onto the end of the story. There is no sharing of feelings or any type of foundation for a relationship to build up from. While the sex is hot, because it lacked romance, it really didn’t work for me.

We also never really get to know Henri. Told in the point of view of Nikolai, this book is all about his life, and his journey during the timeframe of the book. We learn about his father, Vadim and the awkward, colder relationship they have together. I liked how they work on it, and I like that we get to see the two of them together to work out their issues. Nikolai also has major drama with his sister, but that felt more forced and rushed. It felt just thrown in to give him more conflict in his life. I didn’t like the inclusion of that storyline.

There is also conflict over the business dealings, as the CEO of LeBeau decides on a hostile takeover route, putting Henri is an awkward position, both working for LeBeau and being Nikolai’s lover. The business dealings seemed to work out a little too easy. I think overall, I needed a longer story, both to convince me that Nikolai and Henri are actually headed towards a relationship – that Henri would sacrifice all that he does to be with a man by all accounts he barely knows. And to make the outcome of the business dealings flow better. And that would give us a chance to actually get to know Henri better. It’s a good start, but I needed much more.

First impressions: After reading other reviews, I'm glad I read this before reading Special Forces, because I didn't have the expectations that others did. It was easy to connect with Nikolai, and I loved his awkward relationship with Vadim.

The romance was GFY instalove, but Henri was likeable and intriguing enough to make me root for their happy ending. I really want to know more about Henri's backstory, especially the dichotomy of his flirty personality and his intellect and business expertise...more

Was pretty interesting to read. I liked how business-y it was.

The MCs were nice and vulnerable. Utterly delicious.

This was a good book.
