One of the things I really loved about Shelley's Settling series is the characters. After reading each book now, the thing that really stuck with me was the characterization and the way these characters interact with each other. Each one of them has their own personality, their own quirks, and their dialogue is so natural. It really makes them seem real to me.... so kudos to Shelley for some great characterization, for having created some very sympathetic and memorable characters.

Sound takes place just after the events of Settling, however I had to read the previous books again in order to dive in the final installment of the series. This is not necessary, of course, Shelly provides us with adequate information to know just where we are. So it was rather a delicious pleasure that I wanted to take because I loved Solid series since the beginning and I think anyone who likes science fiction will enjoy the trilogy.

I liked how the story unfolded, although felt a little rushed the end, I was surprised to find the final scene. I think I was very nervous thinking about what would happen after that chaotic outcome on Settling. Really, I can not ask for a better ending to the trilogy. How exciting! I loved how the problem was solved between friends, Clio and others are an indescribable charm, their voices are fresh and very appropriate to their ages.

They were, however a few things in the air, but in short, I think the wait was worth it.

Sound was a great way to tie up the Solid trilogy. I loved this trilogy, the characters and the plot. I would be hard pressed to decide which book was my favorite. I enjoyed all three books and think all three worked well to make a great trilogy that told the story of Clio and her friends during the summer they deal with finding out what happened to them well.

The characters continue to be wonderful in this book. Clio continues her struggle to balance wanting her alone time and her typical way of dealing with things with how it works to be friends with a group and come to count on others. I like Clio, she feels real and like a normal teenage girl even with her superhuman powers that she has been secretly without her knowledge been given. I love the others too. Garrett is hysterical with his cockiness and humor. Miranda just being Miranda. Bliss with her sweet naivete. Alexis' tough exterior but strong desire to fit in with the group. Rae and Xavier's toughness have really been great addition to the group since the second book. And of course Jack, wonderful, adorable Jack. Each character brings something to the book, and it's not just their powers, it's their personalities. That's what really contributes to the story and had me enjoying every page.

The story behind this one was a little more under the radar than the first two but it was a good light suspense tale with the characters still taking the front seat. I enjoyed the plot, and enjoyed seeing where it was going. In the end I felt things were a tad rushed, but it didn't bother me too much, I still really enjoyed the book. I just felt I needed a little more right at the most suspenseful part. The very end was handled well, but I'm wondering if there is a bit more on the horizon? Oh Ms. Workinger, you are a crafty one.

Even if there isn't, the end was very satisfying. I will miss seeing the gang again if I there aren't any more books in the works and I will be overjoyed if there are. Either way, this trilogy is finished with a flourish. I have enjoyed each book and loved Sound. Thank you Ms. Workinger for a refreshing fun series revolving around interesting characters and a different plot. I loved every minute and Solid is a tremendous finish. If you haven't tried this series, it's a must-read, if you haven't read Solid yet, then you have to get it to finish up the series. You won't be disappointed.(less)

The final installment in the Solid series is finally here and, thankfully, it’s a very tidy ending for a series I really enjoyed. Awww. It's kind of sad to see Clio's story come to an end. This book was more about Clio reconnecting with her friends and accepting how she fits in with those around her than anything else. Still dealing with the repercussions of her kiss with Ford, Clio has been ostracized by most of her friends, leaving her to wallow in self-pity. Luckily for her, she has some great friends and it's not long before they're all apologizing for over-reacting, asking for her to forgive them for being a little extreme in their silent treatment. Of course Garret's apology was my favourite:

“And I thought maybe I owed you a solid.”

Didn’t see that coming.

“Because I haven’t been the best lately,” he went on, then hurried to clarify. “To you. I’ve obviously kept on being the best thing to happen to, you know, the universe.”

While it was all a little convenient, it also made Clio snap out of her funk, and become the "funny and weird" girl from the first two novels. It also made me appreciate her determination to resolve things with Ford, even though he continued to avoid her, because it wasn't as easy a fix for her.

Of course, at least then I’d know where he was, unlike now, when my seeing him on campus was about as likely as spotting the yeti. Either he was avoiding me, or he traveled by secret tunnel these days. Or both – he’d probably dug secret tunnels just to avoid me.

With things patched up between her friends, the real plot was able to begin! After some not-so-coincidental power outages at different field trips, Clio is convinced that something - or someone - is up to something. But, with her friendships still on shaky grounds, she was forced to drop the issue when all of her friends argued she was grasping at straws - saying she was looking for something to be amiss.

With much of Sound's focus on her rebuilding friendships, there wasn't much room for Clio's theories on who was behind the power outages - or their reasons for it. So when the ending came, and Clio ended up being taken captive, it was with minimal interest from me because there had been very little development leading up to it. With a grossly anticlimactic ending, which ironically enough, Clio comments on later, the villain explains their motives and is thwarted before things get too hairy.

But even with it's lacklustre ending, finishing the last few pages of Sound was bittersweet. I grew to really enjoy Clio and her gang of friends, even with their slightly corny-yet-heartwarming camaraderie, and I'm both sad to see their story come to an end and content with how things wrapped up. For fans of this series, it's a satisfying conclusion to this light and fun trilogy!

I thought it was a really neat idea to go that route and not tie everything up. Instead it could be left up to the reader, so as I was reading the ending I was fully prepared to not get answers to everything.

Then I read the epilogue. The epilogue was different than just leaving some loose ends. It seemed to specifically imply that there was more the the story. It didn't just leave plot points open. It created more of them, which left me kind of confused. This is supposed to be the last book, but now I'm left wondering about the epilogue. Maybe there's more to do with that? Maybe a different series or book based around the same universe that will expand on the epilogue? I don't know. I do know that, if there is a new book or series, I'll read it.

I really enjoyed Sound and the whole series. I'd never read a series like it before. The idea of teenagers finding out they were genetically altered before they were even born was a really neat idea. I loved the characters and the storyline. I definitely recommend this series.

A solid conclusion for for the series. I was so excited to finally read this conclusion to very entertaining trilogy. It mostly wrapped things up, mostly. Relationships and friendships are restored and I feel like Clio really grew up and matured by the close of the novel. I did feel a little let down as far as the plot went. I must say Shelley wrote one heck of a series. I devoured each book and longed for more. Sound is a great ending to her series and she has made a fan out of me for life. Sound, like the rest of the series, was so hard to put down. Her characters are so relatable and full of layers.

Sound takes place immediately after the events in Settling, book two. Clio is ostracized by her group of friends, because of her betrayal of Jack. Clio had an inappropriate moment with Lieutenant Graham at the end of book two and once her friends found out, they shunned her. The worst part was that Jack does not remember anything about Clio's betrayal. In fact, he can't remember his relationship with Clio at all!

Finally, Clio takes ownership of her mistake and is accepted back into her group of friends. I loved the way the conflict resolution between the group was handled. I loved that Clio really owns her feelings and stands up for herself. I also was happy with the way Clio handled her relationship with Jack: it wasn't at all what I was expecting, but it was perfect for the situation. Additionally, I was also pleased with how Workinger resolved the conflict with Lieutenant Graham, especially the part where Clio confesses her indiscretion to Colonel Clark.

My one complaint about Sound was that there was a lot of build-up to the actual action sequence in the book. The build-up was necessary, but I would have preferred for the book to be longer and to have more action.

I was surprised at the ending---which made me happy---I love to be surprised. I think it was the perfect way for Workinger to end the series. She left things open enough for a future sequel, but closed enough to give her readers closure. I hope there is a sequel sometime in the future, because I'd love to read more about the Solid characters and spend some more time in their world!(less)

As soon as I entered into the book, I felt a warmth that comes from welcome and familiarity and the joy of a reunion with some of my favorite characters. Not everyone can enjoy this series, and not every fan will be happy with every aspect of this book, but for my part I found it hard to be totally unhappy with it, even while acknowledging the unadventurous and obviously rushed plot, because the characters never stop being some of the perfect friends I’ve ever read.

In full: Oh-ho, Settling by Shelley Workinger ended with a hot mess that made me nervous for the lovely Clio Kaid. But, that’s me getting ahead of myself.

One of the reasons this series is so near and dear to my heart is because it’s among the first few review requests I ever received and actually loved. The Solid series is comprised of a trio of books that, no matter the direction of the story, remain addictive. The series begins with the illumination of an experiment performed by one shady scientist years ago, who had managed to alter the chromosomes of pregnant soon-to-be mothers somehow connected to the military. This one sinister alteration later brings together nearly all one hundred of the effected teens under one military-sponsored roof to be studied and tested for any dangerous, harmful side effects. What they learn about themselves is both thrilling and disturbing, and sets the course for the rest of the series, as it tempts those greedy for power to take control of the dark opportunity before them. This series specifically follows the life of Clio Kaid, who quickly befriends and brings together a group of clashing personalities who somehow work, and the shenanigans they unwittingly get themselves tangled in during their stay.

What I downright adore about this series so much is the aforementioned group of friends. I can’t go on with this review without mentioning each of them. The original group of five including Clio began with the cocky, hysterical Garrett, whose athletic prowess and friendly charm probably make him my favorite character in all the books, following with kind, peacemaker, adorable Jack and shy, pleasant Bliss, before finally adding in mean, cranky, bossy Miranda to seal the group. Clearly, this is not an ideally matching group but they are far from disjointed. I would’ve been absolutely okay with just the five, but then Workinger later goes on to add in wise, intelligent, reserved Alexis, a girl version of Garrett, Rae, whom I also adore, and, lastly, music-engrossed, hypnotic—literally—Xavier. You would think eight would be a crowd, no? But these later additions to the crew only enhance an already amazing bunch. They are the kind of friends I wish I’d brought together and constantly hung with in high school. Separately, not all of them completely stand out and make a huge impression, but they are each enjoyable. And together? I wish I had a t-shirt for my thoughts.

Solid, for me, is indeed a solid—pun intended—start to the series, and then Settling turned out to be an explosion of awesome for a follow-up. Which is why I was disappointed that Sound by Shelley Workinger wasn’t EVEN BETTER. The first half of the book really worked for me with all the forgiveness and hugs and fixing the mistakes of the second book. I almost wish that Workinger hadn’t added in a mystery and villain to mix in with the rest because it detracts from what I feel the essence of a finale—though, after the epilogue, I’m not quite sure if it’s really over—should be. Because all this mystery-solving takes place, BIG developments that I’d been waiting for since the beginning are rushed instead of focused on. The second half of Sound by Shelley Workinger begins to give a ‘pressed for time’ vibe, as if Workinger was quickly rushing to crush and shove everything in, tying up loose ends in a hurry, and her typically fun Big Reveal suffers tremendously with a totes anti-climactic twist. If Workinger was so adamant about including ALL THE FLIPPING THINGS then there should’ve been an extra fifty pages minimum added onto the story to fit it all better. However, because the author enjoys dishing out short, easily readable books, her lack of room became painfully evident.

Despite the enormous let-down of the plot, I can’t write off the book all together. Shelley’s writing style is simple and companionable, which is a plus, but it all goes back to these characters. This story and its characters aren’t literary masterpieces, and yet I couldn’t quite break down and pinpoint what I love so much about them. It’s that kind of addictive, happy, comfortable love that just brims over whenever you see certain characters interact together. It’s the idea of a group of teens, in spite of their differences and personal obstacles, relating, befriending, and sticking together for better or worse. And when the worst happens, given time, they can forgive, move on, and grow closer together. It’s a collective friendship that, frankly, makes me wistful and envious and happy all at once. What girl wouldn’t feel secretly smug for being the adhesive that not only keeps the group together but also the attraction that lured them into becoming friends to begin with? It’s my secret—or not—fantasy come to fiction!

If you’re after fun, light, quick reads and can suspend a certain amount of disbelief, then you’ll find yourself among those like me who enjoy and are quite entertained by this series as a whole and truly adore the collection of characters within.

Most Likely to be Enjoyed By: The less analytical reader who can enjoy a book completely without analyzing suspicious details and can simply go with the flow, who can enjoy mysteries and the solving of them even if they find themselves ten steps ahead and very expectant of a certain conclusion, and can ultimately relax with the brain candy in front of them and find laughter and cheer among a group of (not necessarily overly developed) characters who create an addictive and compulsively readable friendship and atmosphere, will have an easy time with this series. As for this third book, in particular, I find that fans, whose expectations may be unfulfilled, might be disappointed by the rushed vibe carried throughout the latter half of the book and might also realize that Sound by Shelley Workinger isn’t what they hoped it would be, especially after such a long wait between this installment and the last.

Content Warning: This book, this series for that matter, is perfect for a middle grade to young adult audience as it lacks any profound harshness or worrisome content. There’s kissing, death threats, but nothing explicitly violent or sexual in any of the books.

The Solid books are always enjoyable reads that you can fly through fairly easily, and Sound is no exception. I really enjoy the “super powers” aspect, especially when it started off with a government conspiracy, and that aspect of the tale remains interesting. Where Sound is successful is in the great group dynamic that’s at play. There are all these different characters, but you feel like you get to know each of them because of their distinct personalities and abilities.

The conclusion to the Solid series is a fast paced and interesting end to the lovey world inhabited by Clio Kaid and her fellow mutants. I use the word “mutant” loosely because this isn’t a true genetic mutation born of evolution, but rather an intentionally scientifically engineered one that I still want to know more about. Luckily, the door is left open to get more information down the line, and I’m almost as excited as Clio would be.

I adore the Solid series by Shelley Workinger, so I’m naturally sad to see it end, but if that epilogue is any indicator, there’s still more to be told.

Well we have come to the end of the solid trilogy by Shelley Workinger with the final installment sound. Here we pick up where Settling left off with Clio Kaid having to take responsibility for the choices she made. Her friendships have become a mess and she has no clue how to fix them. after an end of summer outing things get even more interesting for cilo.

I've been with the series since the release of the first novel. I was happy to be asked to participate in the tour for the final book. Sound was a great ending to a trilogy I've really enjoyed.

There are still questions to be answered about their abilities, and some might have plans for their abilities - given the opportunity to control them.

Great (maybe) ending to this series. :) Clean. No full on review for this book because I've got so many going on and this was sort of an in between sneaker book. I really wanted to read this book even though I probably didn't have time to do it. I just couldn't help myself. The last book of the series is always a draw. I'm a girl that likes resolution and while this book didn't tie everything up in a box with a pretty bow, it did give enough resolution to satisfy me. This was a fun book.

I’m a big fan of Shelley and the Solid series. I hate to see it come to an end (Is it the end? ☺), but I think she did a great job wrapping things up. There is always a good mix of drama, action, and humor in each of Shelley’s novels and she does a great job portraying the lives of the extraordinary teens. This was a quick read & a nice ending to a series that I have really enjoyed! Clio & the gang are a fun bunch and I am going to miss them. It was great to see Clio make up with her friends and still continue to "solve the mystery." After book 2 I was so mad at Clio, but I am glad she fixed things and I got to understand why she did what she did.
