I found Rise of the Magi a truly enchanting tale that kept my interest and kept me wondering what the next page would bring.
Much like traveling through the wardrobe in Chronicles of Narnia, the characters are transported to another world...one that piqued my curiosity.
Although I felt some detail in the beginning chapters could have been trickled into the story rather than fed to me in one big dose, I was captivated by the characters and I wanted to know what great adventure they were taking.

Rise of the Magi... A tale of 3 broken souls seeking truth and satisfaction and finding much more than they had bargained for in their journey. Omar is the stubborn Atheist who has many good and desirable traits. In his quest to save his sister in an alternate dimension he comes closer than ever to the truth but chooses to wear the blinders that our modern day science has created for most Darwinists. Myles, a scoundrel, is the most loveable of characters. Aren’t we all scoundrels deep down insid...more

Rise of the Magi was indeed a fascinating book mixing Science Fiction within fiction and Religion. I found the book to be easy reading till I needed a score card to keep up with all the different races and portals. It reminded me of the Robert Jordan’s Series where there is a lot of description and very little dialogue. I loved his characters Myles the Gambler, Omar the scientist who reminds me of Einstein, Tyree and many of the main characters which Randy creates as he takes you from one dimens...more

Oh my word! I just finished reading the Kindle version of this book. It’s like a rollercoaster ride. As a reader you are thrown into the plotline and immersed into Mr. Blackwell's worlds. I think there is a little bit of everything in Rise of the Magi for lovers of all genres. It's really hard to explain but I will try to do so by referencing movies and TV shows. Stargate/Sliders meets Chronicles of Narnia, Cowboys and Aliens meets Lost (minus the horrible ending in Lost), Lord of the Rings meet...more

Rise of the Magi had me hooked from the start. The first chapter is the kind that gets you so hooked it doesn't matter if the rest of the book is trash, you want to know what happens in the end. But the rest of the book was not trash. Indeed, it was magnificent. This novel is a real page turning piece of work and the action never stops. I have never seen someone spin a story combining so many different elements (fantasy, sci-fi, christianity, steampunk, romance, and action/adventure) and do it...more

There isn't a lot of really good Christian fiction out there that clearly points to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. This Book is one the very well written exceptions. The author weaves the truths of the Bible throughout this fantastic quest themed novel. The characters are very well thought out and developed and they mirror the types and attitudes of people in the real world. This gives the book a "real" feel to it. The insight into the internal thoughts and emotions mimics the actual thou...more

I was excited to get into this story and looked forward to finding out about the new world and characters. The overall story kept me reading. I typically don't like when descriptions are overdone when it comes to new places and races, some of the new races and places introduced in this story could have used some more descriptions/history (and there is a big range of races - for example height of the races range from a few inches to 25 feet). Even in a reality where things operate differently som...more

The author needs to work on his writing technique, especially in the first 1/3 of the book. This is a first novel, and it shows in that way. Despite that, the story and the characters are vivid (though the dialog often leaves more to be desired), making this book well worth reading. I recommend it.

I enjoyed the Rise of the Magi a lot. The parallels with Scripture are blatantly obvious. The world in the book is creative and it is interesting how the transformation once the Master is accepted is shown. The Red Dragon and the ability to change in order to deceive was an important point. I feel like the story line is geared more toward teens and, therefore, would be a great outreach method. I look forward to reading the second book when it is released.

The Rise of the Magi is a sci-fi, christian fantasy, steam punk, action adventure, and romance (WOOOO) kinda book. Chapter one grabbed me and sent me on a wonderful exciting journey. I'm a huge sci-fi fan, so all the different characters and dimensions etc, is right up my alley. I can't wait to jump into the continuation of this story because I really need to know when the Dragon is going down!

This is a bold and exciting novel, but do not let the Christian tag stop you from reading this. This novel has a unique storyline and takes you on quite a journey.

A great read for the YA audience.

Forgotten Portals: Rise of the Magi

LOVE LOVE LOVE This book!!!!!
i was hooked from the first chapter (which has never happened!!)
The excitement and intensity of hardly being able to wait to see what happened next! The thoughts that race through your mind as your reading and the ability to relate to the characters were awesome! There was not a single part of this book that I did not enjoy.
This is a book that you will not want to put down till the end.

Well, the story and premise is very good, and there's a lot of potential in the characters and premise, but the writing is lacking. There was much, much more telling than showing that made it difficult to read at the beginning before things picked up speed, and then it got easier to read as it picked up speed. There were times I had to stop and reread sections because the way it was written was confusing. The ending was anticlimactic, and the discussions on Christianity didn't seem real. But it...more

Randy has created an amazing blend of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and solid Christian values in a novel that draws the reader away to a new world full of mystery and adventure. This book passes my personal test of a great read: I stop being conscious of reading, and become engrossed, letting my imagination take over as guided by the words on the page while watching the story unfold. I highly recommend this book, and am very excited to explore these worlds and characters further.

In Rise of the Magi, Forgotten Portals, Blackwell has created a solid Christian work combining fantasy with the Christian morals so desperately needed today in books aimed at young adults. This was my first fantasy/sci-fi book and I was drawn into the story immediately. The maze of tunnels was especially enticing. This book fits well into the secular as well as Christian categories. It's not preachy; it's spellbinding!
I can hardly wait for book 2.

I just finished this book. It was one of the best books that I have read in a long time. It was fresh and interesting and transported me through the portal with them. I can scarcely wait for the next book to find out what happens to Kasey, Myles and Omar.

I really enjoyed this book. Normally Christian based SyFi is boring, but this was the oppose it. "Rise of the Magi" is a really creative and very unique story.
