It was 1972, and a teenage girl named Elizabeth Ryan thought that her world was coming to an end. Elizabeth was the daughter of two Selkies, you see, and she had just been passed up for a skin. But then a mysterious cousin who calls herself Annie appears, and Elizabeth finds other things to t...more

Wow! This is the story everyone who was blown away by the confrontation between the Luidaeg and the head of the selkie clan at the end of One Salt Sea wants to read - it's the backstory between these two characters, and very generously it's available for free on Seanan McGuire's website. Don't read this before One Salt Sea, but do be sure to read it afterward. Given the bitter, tormented relationship exposed there, it's no surprise that this story is full of heartbreak. The Luidaeg has always be...more

Review from 1st read, August/September 2012. 2nd read, March 2013.

Firstly, for anyone who hasn't seen this about: the ebook is available through Seanan's website, seananmcguire.com. It's free to download and is not available in print form at this point.

Secondly, for Toby readers who have never heard Seanan's music, I suggest you try to find the song "In This Sea", from her album "Stars Fall Home" (now sadly out of print). It ties in perfectly to this, its companion story. I read this a while aft...more

This is a short story that expands on revelations from One Salt Sea in the October Daye series. If you haven't read that far in the series, there are minor spoilers.

Chronologically, this story is a prequel, with only a little of the timeline overlapping. None of the main characters show up in this. It is, instead, a story which gives insight into the Luidaeg, the grumpy sea witch Toby both fears and needs in her adventures.

She's less grumpy in this story. Here, she's Annie, the green-eyed cousin...more

This beautiful story concerns the Selkies of the October Daye world and is told from the point of view of Elizabeth, who's the head of one Selkie family by the time of the books. In this beautiful story that takes place over about twenty years, Elizabeth tells of how she fell in love with someone she shouldn't have and learned the truth of the Selkies as well as the price she paid for that truth.

I don't want to say a lot about the details of the story because it fits together beautifully and it...more

What an interesting, emotional, and well-written short novella! I particularly liked this story because Seanan McGuire really knows how to pull a reader in and keep them hooked even to the bitter end and the ending truly was bittersweet for both Annie and Liz.

This look into the past of the Luidaeg and some of the Selkies previously introduced in One Salt Sea showes readers how even a seawitch can find just a little bit of true happiness even when it leads to the ultimate heart-break and changes...more

Set in the world of October Daye, this short story focuses on the Selkies of Half Moon Bay and most specifically Elizabeth, a daughter of two Selkies who is repeatedly passed over for a skin, and their mysterious cousin Annie, a Roane whom cannot shift, who keeps watch over their traditions. What Annie gives to Liz is without compare, or so she thinks for many years until that which has ever been denied her is finally offered. Will she return to those who snubbed her over and over again or stay...more

Mmh, this was weird.

I love the world of October Daye, but apparently I've completely forgotten what happened between the Selkies and the Roanes? And don't have my October Daye books with me to check ... so, my lack of background knowledge unfortunately ended up making this story less interesting. I also didn't remember either Colin nor Liz from the main story.

I used to like Annie, but I don't understand her behavior here. It felt kinda out of character? Mostly, the love story really didn't work...more

EDIT 12-26-12: Hmm. The more I think about it, the less I understand how things ended up with Annie and Liz. I'm beginning to think this is one of those stories in which the major conflict stems from a willful lack of communication. Which makes the (view spoiler)[tragic ending (hide spoiler)] feel kind of contrived.

Here's the thing. I really do understand why (view spoiler)[the Luidaeg wanted to curse the descendants of the people who murdered the Roane. Who wouldn't feel that kind of rage, in h...more

I liked this short story. It was very poignant. If you wanted something for all your life, thought you were not going to get it and left your old life to be with someone you loved but were suddenly offered the one thing you coveted...what would you do?

A nice side story that does not truly affect the Toby Daye series but fleshes out the background of a secondary character, the Ludaieg, the Sea-Witch.

Recommended as a nice side tale that enhances the depth and breadth of the October Daye series.

These are the things every Selkie-child knows: that the sea does not love us, that we are finite and flawed, and that we must never, never trust the sea-witch.

This brief story sheds light on the relationship between The Luidaeg and Elizabeth, the Selkie clan leader we met at the end of One Salt Sea. It's a must read for all Toby Daye fans especially after reading One Salt Sea.

If you haven't read any of the October Daye books, I highly suggest you wait to read this story, as it makes more sense after reading the fifth novel of the series.

That said, this is a moving piece that really captures the essence of McGuire's writing. I consider this a must-read if you're a fan of her work. Really loved the complexity of the world and the Catch-22 the protagonist finds herself in. Fabulous.

I've never read any of the books in the October Daye series, but I jumped right in with this story because it is a Hugo nominee this year.

It was a fun little story. I gather that there is much more back story between the sea witch and the selkie clans. This story gave me a good taste of their world. I may need to explore the other titles in this series.

Reading this one made me sad, I hated that Liz felt over looked for most of her life. I hated that her mother gave her a choice knowing where she was in her life. I hated that Liz made the wrong choice. But most of all I hated when all was revealed to Liz and she realized just what she lost.

Seanan McGuire, writing in whatever guise, has a gift for writing characters that winnow their way into a reader's heart so throughly that their pains are shared by the reader.

it is twingingly painful when we first meet Liz and discover why she's a cousin. that twinge only becomes worse as it is repeated, even as Liz meets again and again with odd, mysterious cousin Annie. The pain is gaspingly sharp as Liz finally gets her heart's desire, not understanding the price she will pay for this choice...more

Well, this helped a lot. I was a bit confused at the end of that book and wondering about the story there with Elizabeth and the "Annie". It was a beautiful little love story with a horribly sad ending. She wasn't a second prize, but Liz couldn't stop being what she was either.
Andrew Miller
Just like all of Seanan McGuire's most recent works this was amazing. Sweet and depressing. Like the other October Daye stories it presents an alien worldview that somehow sucks you in and presents the world from a skewed perspective. All while feeling real and honest.

Exceptionally good short story, but certainly not a fluffy, feel-good kind of thing. It gives us a lot of insight into the Luidaeg and the history of the selkies but it isn't written as a history, it's a romance. A 24 page bitter sweet romance.
Pamela
What a great, emotional read. Even though it was a bit heartbreaking, I truly enjoyed reading about the hidden heart of the sea witch. Her character is great in the October series, but it was wonderful to read a Novella all her own.
Jami Leigh
*Happy sigh* No words for it. There's this sadness to this story, giving it this sense of ineffable, inevitable longing that can never be changed. I love the way Seanan crafts mood. Awesome.
Sarah
First, it's not a Toby book. It's the same universe and that's about it. I did enjoy getting some background for the Luidaeg, but I really didn't like the main character,Elizabeth, much. She seemed selfish to me, which really blew the whole story for me.
Geoffrey
Ms. McGuire can do no wrong in my eyes and this bittersweet and beautiful creation is just one more example.
Susana
A tale about life and love.

Just like the other stories that take place in the "October Daye" world, this was another beautifully crafted tale.

A treat for any "October Daye" fan.

Holy shit, this made me cry. The Luidaeg is probably my favourite character in the October Daye books, and this was just lovely. LOVELY. More of this, please.

Sad beautiful story. Sigh.
Jean
This a bittersweet love story. It's probably not imperative that you read this one, but it gives some more insight into the Luidaeg (one of my favorite characters) and delves into the Selkie society. It's also free on Ms. McGuire's website here. Read this one after One Salt Sea (October Daye, #5).
Sophie
Omg so sad and so good. The detail of the clean hallway alone is enough to break your heart. An aching, perfect story.
Michelle
A beautiful and heart breaking looking into the Luidaeg's past. A sea-witch who has been loved and hurt and loved and hurt again.
Betsy
If you love the Tobey Daye series you cannot miss this novella. It is a breath takingly beautiful and tender tale of the Luidaeg.

Hi! I'm Seanan McGuire, author of the Toby Daye series (Rosemary and Rue, A Local Habitation, An Artificial Night, Late Eclipses), as well as a lot of other things. I'm also Mira Grant (www.miragrant.com), author of Feed and Deadline.

Born and raised in Northern California, I fear weather and am remarkably laid-back about rattlesnakes. I watch too many horror movies, read too many comic books, and...more
