This was the first Yarbro vampire book that I read. I thought it was so good that I checked down the others, including ones that were out of print. The novel is good and accurate historical fiction set during the time of the three mustketeers. The d'Artagnan of the title is the historical d'Artagnan upon who Dumas based his own character. As always, the historical detail is excellent: people, places, events, clothes, food, everything. I always enjoy Yarbro but i especially like her historical settings and how she weaves the characters. I really like Olivia, being that she is a strong female character.

Olivia inserted into the world of Dumas' Three Musketeers, with rather more historical accuracy for the time period than Mr. Dumas.

A professional writer for more than forty years, Yarbro has sold over eighty books, more than seventy works of short fiction, and more than three dozen essays, introductions, and reviews. She also composes serious music. Her first professional writing - in 1961-1962 - was as a playwright for a now long-defunct children's theater company. By the mid-60s she had switched to writing stories and hasn' ...more
