Tačiau kelionė namo ...more

Why is this not as popular as All Quiet on the Western Front? Like All Quiet, it's about a young German soldier in WWII, but this one has a great love story and was three times more pleasurable for me. *note* Don't read this if you're a recovering alcoholic because on every page, someone is drinking something.

update: Oops, I mean WWI.

In rea

This book was quite amazing. It is from the viewpoint of a Nazi soldier who gets to go home from war. He finds out that things home are terrible, everything is turned upside down. He falls in love and among the chaos there are moments of peace and beauty. There is amazing social commentary on concepts such as collective guilt, our responsibility to standing up to evil and war. The ending of the book is quite haunting and i cant wait to read more of his books

Brilliant on so many levels. We were studying the Stanford Prison Experiment in psychology, which led me to read Ordinary Men, which led me to read this. And I honestly think this is the better of the three for explaining why good people do bad things.

A soldier tries on the role of a civilian, tries to balance following orders with making his own life, and struggles with disillusionment and love. He's still a Nazi, still a German soldier, but he doesn't feel the weight of those title yet. He's j

Otherwise known as 'All Quiet on the Eastern Front'...
after Remarque's notable work 'All Quiet on the Western Front'
it's been observed he was a one trick pony and this book
does nothing to defer that accusation.

This is a sentimental version with our hero Ernst, a
German soldier on the Eastern Front who undergoes all the
ups and downs of soldiers everywhere. Remarque was
nestled in Hollywood when he wrote this one during the
war, so I'm sure he had movies on the brain.

I did like this tale particula

I have always been a fan of Erich Maria Remarque's novel "All Quiet on the Western Front", which I consider to be one of the best war novels ever written. So, when I saw "A Time to Love and a Time to Die" at a used book store, I was excited to read it. I had hoped that "A Time" would live up to the high standards of "All Quiet". I was not disappointed.

"A Time" is arguably an even better novel than "All Quiet". Set in World War II, it is the story of Ernst Grueber, a soldier in the German Army on

Uzvilkt skaistu kleitu. Aiziet vakariņās. Pavadīt ar tiem, ko mīlam, kopā katru brīdi, atceroties, ka šie brīži reiz izbeigs ...more

Given to me as a gift from my daughter. It is heavy reading (war, of course) from the get-go. I read the first few pages right before bed and immediately thought that it was NOT bed-time reading
material. However, once over the initial graphic subject matter, I settled in. At heart, it truly was a desperate story of trying to live a normal life when life was anything but normal. Would I recommend it? Yes, but I've always lived a more thoughtful life and enjoyed a good drama over comedy.

The book of WWII is about the man from another side - he is not a hero, he is not a bad man. He just wanted to be alive and you become to sympathize with him

It was ammazing. I cannot say that I was enjoying because the book started with the scene of describing dead soldiers: and it was about war.
Read and think about life. After this book it's impossible to not think about life and what you have now. Now I understand and worth more each second of my life and what do I have right now.

My first aquaintance with the works of Remarque. What can I say... This novel is perfect!

Remarque doesn't take sides. He tells you a story. He tells it simply and honestly. Not important in what country you was born and what side you took - war is the same everywhere, it's always awfull and meaningless.

The style of narration captivated me, it is so easy and clear! And the dialogs are brilliant! It is such a plesure to read them!

Remarque shows us, that there is no bad nations - only bad people.

"There's no such thing as a "bad book" when it comes from Remarque" - is my constant recommendation, when someone asks me is it worth start reading it.
This book is a conglomerate of his earlier warfare novels (All quiet on the western front) and his later, much sentimental and bohemian writings (Heaven has no favorites, L`arch de triomphe). As an antiwar hero, he depicts the war which we always tend to forget, putting the realities and the reason in every human being, fighting on the both sides

I remember the thing I loved most about this book was discussing it with Dad. He wasn't big on novels, but he thought this one was ok, because it was about a German soldier on leave from the Soviet front. :) One of the best scenes we discussed was the one where the main character is on the train ride away from the front, and all the soldiers are talking about what they are really fighting for. Trying to make sense of the racial purity policies, trying to understand who is an ally and who is real ...more

People complained that this book is pretty much Remarque's formula for depressing reads. Sure it is, but hey, some of us love Remarque because angst and bittersweet romance is what we're going to get! The novel starts off in Russia, with a ghastly description of the front lines, and moves back through the wasteland of the narrator's hometown, as he tries to find his family, and experiences microcosms of both the soldier and the civilian trying to simply survive in the latter days of a war they w ...more

Just a few notes for myself, as a reminder.. XD

If I could, I would've given this book 4.5 stars. It is quite (mm, i do love this word XD *feels like a sir*) good, but with a couple of minor flaws. Firstly, dialogs oftentimes are very forced, it feels as if everyone is a philosophy major, from a lowly commoner to an SS officer.. Secondly, the ending is rushed. Yes, you can kinda see how this will end, it is fittingly random, but still..
Overall, it is kind of a war romance story, but it always fee

Time to Love and A Time to Die: http://readwithstyle.wordpress.com/20...

Recently I read an article about the topics you should avoid when speaking to a foreigner, depending on his country of origin. Unsurprisingly, the most popular topic one should never mention in front of a German is World War II. Germans are quite sensitive about Hitler, the concentration camps, and the Jews and they don’t like discussing it or even mentioning it. However, this is the single most violent event of the 20th cen

Erich Maria Remarque is one of the best known and most widely read authors of German literature in the twentieth century.

Remarque's biography is essentially marked and his writing fundamentally influenced by German history of the twentieth century: Childhood and youth in imperial Osnabrück, World War I, the Weimar Republic, and most of all his exile in Switzerland and the United States. With the
