Everyone knows how all those fairy tales go. The princess gets beautiful, nabs her prince, falls instantly in love, lives happily ever after and leaves her evil stepsisters in the dust.

But what happens when you’re the ugly stepsister and your obnoxiously perfect—read pretty, smart, and, worst of all, sickeningly nice—stepsister is dating the charming, tall, devastatingly h...more

4 1/2 stars. Very fun and enjoyable book. Adults will enjoy it as much as teens will. My daughter loved it too, even as much as me. Characters were fun. Ella was my favorite.

"Salad isn't food. Salad is what food eats."

This book is so much more than I expected. The characters are wonderful but definitely not perfect. Sometimes I thought they were jerks but they're so alive and multi-dimensional. I absolutely adore multi-dimensional characters. Aaaaa....dore. I loved everything about this book from the plot delivery to the beautiful and timeless concepts of self-acceptance and love. But most of all I was enchanted with Mattie. She just makes everything so interesting...more

Another free kindle book that I bought on whim that turned out to be AMAZING, and possibly one of my new favourites!

Firstly I love the main character - she is perfectly relate able, and I think a lot of girls feel they are in the same position as her, except perhaps without the flawless (step)sister, rich background and of course the pink hair! Mattie Lowe is amazing, and is now a heroine of mine.

The true colours of high school life are shown very clearly and realistically, which again is one...more

This is not your typical young adult teen romance. This book is such a sweet and funny Cinderella story about Mathilda (Mattie) Lowe, a manga artist, who perceives herself to be the ugly stepsister of Ella; the beautiful, perfect, and popular cheerleader.

Eighteen year old Mattie, with her fuscia streaked hair and non-prescription black-rimmed glasses (her crutch of sorts), is a defiant emo artist with with a long list of grievances against her perfect stepsister, Ella. Having never been kissed...more

This book made me so happy. It reminded me so much of my reading experience with some of the other books I absolutely loved. Especially Fat Cat, Sean Griswold's Head and Flipped. If you're a fan of any of these books, you're bound to love The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back.

Mattie has been hopelessly in love with Jack Kingston since the age of 9. But before anything could happen between them he started dating her super nice, perfect stepsister Ella. Not like she believes that a guy like Jake w...more

Cinderella has always been one of my favorite fairy tales so I am always on the lookout for interesting retellings of it. I stumbled across The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back a few weeks ago when I saw an ad about it being free (temporarily) on Amazon. Now, I am not one to turn my nose up at free books so I hopped on over there to buy it. And I am so glad I did! This was a real hidden jewel for me and I definitely recommend it to fans of sweet YA contemporaries with a fairy tale flair.

THIS is what I call a good entertainer. Although I give some books 5 star rating, only very few move on to my 'favorites' shelf. And this book made it.

Sariah, you have got a die-hard fan from the minute I started this read. Thanks, 1000 times thanks for making this book so much fun. I JUST LOVED IT!!!

If there is some book this author is writing, just count me in! I am going to stalk her from now on..

So, this is the gist of the novel:

Don't let the cover fool you. Seriously. I admit to being skeptical about the book at first because of the cover and the Cinderella-inspired plot. But once I started reading it, I couldn't stop!

I just love how incredibly well written this book is. I liked that the story incorporated a few Cinderella elements into it without letting them take over. I also liked that the story tackled things that teenagers would normally experience: envy, self-doubt, first...more

The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back is another indie gem I ran across while trawling through Amazon's "... also viewed" lists looking for my next indie read. The indie market has become so overly saturated with mediocre reads that while I love reading and supporting amazing indies, I must admit to a greater feeling of apprehension at times. HOWEVER, this book put those fears to rest immediately as I found it to be exceptionally well-written and executed. It's laugh-out loud funny with fantastic hum...more

I've been looking for something light and fun to read. Something without supernatural creatures and post-apocalyptic settings. The minute I saw this on Amazon I knew I'd hit the jackpot. It took me a while to get through it, even though it's not that long, because I had to stop at just about every turn of the page and take the time to roll on the ground with laughter. It was some very serious business.
It's a perfect read for Disney fanatics and hormonal teenage girls. Sariah Wilson captures the...more

A real feel-good book that satisfies your quest for all that is right in the world.

In a nutshell, girl pines for unattainable boy. Boy dates girl's sister. Sister dumps boy. Boy fall for original girl. This is a tried and true plot formula for many a romantic comedy. Nothing surprising or unexpected happens here. The adult reader will figure out the ending very quickly. The YA reader will definitely enjoy the ride to the end.

This is a very quick read for the experienced reader. This book is li...more

I received an ARC of this charming book from the Goodreads First Reads program.

This book is a modern day retelling of the Cinderella story, with a twist. I immediately wanted to root for the main character, Mattie, as she deal with life at high school which includes her perfect stepsister, Ella. I wanted to dislike Ella, but found it impossible.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down, and finished it the same day that I received it in the mail! It was fun and easy to read. It made me s...more

Think Clueless meets Cinderella, but from the other side. It's fun, light-hearted, with nuggets of truth, and contains enough teenage angst to remind older folks how traumatic school really used to be. A great read!

Holy Cow. This book is fantastic. You may be thinking, "Oh this is another typical teenage romance." Well.. that's where you are wrong!

It's the journey to the end that is the most delightful. I read it multiple times not just to see how it ends but because I loved the path to get there. How Sariah sets it up and has them stumbling along until they finally understand that they like each other is the best part.

I won't give any spoilers - but there are some of the CUTEST scenes in here that I, as a...more

A fun modern day Cinderella with a twist. I enjoyed the dynamics within the family relationships. A great book for the giddy romantic teen.

Cute story, and not too much melodrama... Well, it is YA fiction after all. :-)

This one was fun. And not only was it fun, it was funny.

I know there have been a million plays on Cinderella, but usually Cinderella gets the staring roll. I really was kind of fun to see the stepsister get the spot light for a change. And I loved Mattie. Mattie doesn’t have it all. She is not beautiful, she doesn’t get perfect grades, and she is head over heels in love with Jake Ryan Kingston, her stepsisters boyfriend.

Through it all she finds out her stepsister may not be so evil, and maybe Ja...more

This was a cute, fun book. I was expecting there to be a sort of rivalry between Mattie and Ella, and there was a bit of one at first, but they both really just liked each other two much to be bitter enemies. That was nice to see, when Cinderella stories usually rely on that relationship as the main source of conflict.

The Mattie/Jake relationship was interesting, and listening in on Mattie's personal reactions to Jake was hilarious. She'd get so flustered from just a smile, or a handshake. But d...more

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not the sappy romance lover (cheesiness beware!) or the girly-girl book obsesser-overer, but sometimes, a girl’s just gotta have that one little treat! In this case, this book is the treat, and I’m the one patting my stomach after over-indulging. However, since this is a virtual treat, I don’t need to worry about getting back into shape.

I’ll be honest. I only read this book because at the time,...more

Okay, first reason I loved this book and still do is because it was beyond relatable for me. Okay, so I don't have a stepsister who's ten times prettier than me. Neither do I have a crush on the hottest guy in school(mostly cuz I study in a girls' high school and never really had a chance to) but I've had this one crush and I understood that horrible pain of the fear of not being loved back, but that's what I'mma do in this review, talk about each aspect of the book that I loved.

First, there's t...more

In this retelling with a twist, Matilda “Mattie” Lowe is the ugly stepsister. She lives in a wealthy California community and goes to an exclusive prep school. She lives with her world renowned artist father and her stepsister Ella. Ella is perfect, which is offensive to Mattie. She even has a list of grievances about her: guys like her, she’s really nice, she cleans all the time, she’s a cheerleader and oh, yeah she’s dating the bo...more

I read to be entertained. I am busy and I need something fluffy and fun that sucks me in, and this book did that for me. I liked it so much I stayed up later than I should reading it, and then I came over and had to turn the computer back on just so I could gush about it. Was it fabulous literature? No. It was a fun story. I'm not a fan of the classics. I'm a fan of entertainment and being taken somewhere else that doesn't include dishes and piles of laundry and screaming children. So this book...more

Actually 4.5.

Mattie Lowe has a beautiful, "perfect", stepsister named Ella. Ella is not only pretty, a cheerleader, a charity worker, and good-hearted, but she has as a boyfriend, Jake Livingston, who Mattie has been in love with, since she was nine years old. Jake and Ella are part of the "in" crowd, while Mattie is an outsider with attitude.

THE UGLY STEPSISTER STRIKES BACK is a delightful young adult romance with interesting, complex characters. Mattie has issues to work through dealing with h...more

I gave this book 3 stars, but it deserves close to a 4. I had never read any book by Sariah Wilson, but I would most definitely read more stories of hers. This is a book is directed toward a younger crowd, but I still loved it! The love story was extremely PG, but it is exactly what I was expecting when I picked this book up. I just wanted a nice, light read.

I wasn't expecting was to fall in love with Sariah's writing style, but she got me. Hook, line and sinker. The way she wrote the book and...more

I wasn't sure what to expect upon hearing about THE UGLY STEPSISTER STRIKES BACK. The cover looked like a full-fledged fairy tale, so I immediately wanted it. When I started reading, however, it was clear that this wasn't the stepsister's version of Cinderella. For one thing, Mattie's dad married Ella's mom, and Mattie and her father aren't evil. Neither is Ella, though she does have a few do-gooder Cinderella-esque qualities. In fact, Mattie feels sub-par next to Ella, who is everything she isn...more

This is simply delightful! I loved Mattie’s voice in this surprisingly humorous and poignant story that is easy for most of us to relate to. There were many times I cackled out loud at some thought or antic. The pacing was perfect for this book; I just had to keep on reading to find out what would happen next.

Almost as endearing as Mattie is her step-sister Elle. Both girls are strong, independent and creative but pursue different outlets for their talents. Importantly, however, both have their...more

This fun and heart warming read is what you get when you blend two parts Cinderella with one part John Hughes. The super-hot object of Mattie Lowe's non-prescription glasses clad eyes is even named Jake, (a la Sixteen Candles).
But I digress...
Mattie is a perfect example of a person who can't see her own forest because she is too busy staring at other people's trees.
She is a wonderful, smart, and beautiful girl in her own right, who has a few issues.

Ok...Ok...I have to stop myself here before I s...more

This was an enjoyable read, but there wasn't anything spectacular about it. There were a ton of cliches but to be fair, I like cliches sometimes, and it obviously was good enough for me to finish reading. If you're looking for a short, fluff read, then I'd reccommend it and since I got it for free on Amazon, I'm always happy about that.

Matilda (Mattie/Tilly) lives with her sister (STEPsister) Ella and her father, who is an artist. Both the girls' mothers aren't in their lives anymore, although...more
