Ystyn Francis
The quintessential Australian gothic playtext, "Constance Drinkwater..." relates a disturbing colonial tale set at the tip of Cape York. With horrors both supernatural and man-made permeating the multi-faceted narrative, this play is one of the best I have ever read and would have been in equal parts fascinating and terrifying to see performed in the theatre.

This play put simply, is painful.
Its melodrama, though characteristic of Gothic theatre, has no foundation or positive contribution to the play.
The conclusion, though intriguing was both inadequate and unbelievable which lessened the success of the play in my opinion.
Important themes and issues dealt, but poor delivery, story and writing.
