I want my YA goggles back! Iwant my YA heroines to be strong and independent. I want my heroes not to be creepy. What ever happened to strong and independent heroines/heroes? Why on earth has this story come to revolve around a murderous set... and I don't mean the vampires!

This second book of the Vampire Diaries series picks up exactly where the first book ended. Stefan is missing, and Elena confronts Damon by her choosing. We see a lot more of Damon in this books and he gets close to classmates and family members, drawing ever closer to her. Bonnie's abilities get showcased more in this book as well. This story also focuses more on Elena's missing diary.
The pace of this book seemed a bit faster to me, which I liked. we also get to know the minor characters, Matt,...more

I thought it ironic because the song playing when I finished it was Vampires Will Never Hurt You by My Chemical Romance. . . Ha! Ha! Ha!

I liked The Struggle a lot better than the Awakening. Elena's character was a lot more likable in this one, and it flowed easier. It just made more sense--plus there was lots of Damon which made me happy! ;)

Mostly, though, the series just made my DYING to see the next episode of Vampire Diaries on the CW. I like the television adaption much better of the book it...more

Iniziato e finito in un giorno.
La lettura è scorrevole, piacevole e tuttosommato ricca di suspance.
Non manca niente a queswto libro, benchè catalogato come un 'libro per ragazzi' l'autrice riesce comunque a coinvolgere anche chi ha degli standard decisamente più alti.
La protagonista è decisamente ben strutturata, è umana e quindi con pregi è difetti.
e' riuscita a creare una ragazza forte, decisa e combattiva ma allo stesso tempo in grado di provare paura e quindi di sentirsi indifesa.

I admit I decided to read these books because of the TV show. Also, they're easy reads and, well, I do love a good vampire story.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't call The Vampire Diaries a good vampire story, though it does have its moments. I guess the main issue I have with the books in general is that I pretty much hate all the main characters. Actually, I like Matt the human and I appreciate Damon for his pure evil (he is so much darker in the books than in the TV show!) and fro...more More like 2.5 stars.

I admit I decided to read these books because of the TV show. Also, they're easy reads and, well, I do love a good vampire story.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't call The Vampire Diaries a good vampire story, though it does have its moments. I guess the main issue I have with the books in general is that I pretty much hate all the main characters. Actually, I like Matt the human and I appreciate Damon for his pure evil (he is so much darker in the books than in the TV show!) and from what little I've read of Meredith, she seems pretty cool.

However, when the main female protagonist is a shallow selfish asshole, it's kind of hard to really enjoy the books. The Struggle was a definite improvement from The Awakening though, possibly because you learn more about the characters and see more facets. That may be the only reason I didn't rate this book lower. The story itself was interesting enough to keep me reading despite the uninteresting writing. Even though Elena is hard to like as a character, I appreciate that she's shown to have both a good and an evil side. That's a reasonable excuse for her to consort with Damon, Prince of Darkness, after all.

As for Damon...I was surprised. He is so much less sympathetic in the books than in the show and at first, I thought it strange that Elena would want to have anything to do with him. I'm wondering how he and Stefan will ever reconcile as brothers because from this book, it just seems impossible. Damon really wants Stefan dead and I don't recall anything friendly about their relationship from what backstory the author provided in Book 1. Strangely enough, I don't hate Damon too much, simply because I'm intrigued by him and his affinity for evil. I like that he has no qualms about his darkness and takes full responsibility. That obviously doesn't excuse him from his crimes, but still, he stirred up the pot in Fell's Church. I like me a good villain! I almost wish Damon in the show had been evil for longer - it seemed way too easy for him to become better (I guess that's arguable since he still does bad things).

So my main complaint was really about the writing. I'm not a fan of some of the characters either and sometimes events seem contrived, but overall, this was a quick read that didn't make me angry, so points for that. It's a little juvenile, but teens enjoy it, so.(less)

Like many people, I read this because I loved the TV show. To anybody else who has this idea, I say this: really, truly, don't waste your time. Even if you love the characters. The TV show has created lovely characters and the book just doesn't have them.

So book two. What to say, what to say. It is well written. Upon Elena's question as to whether Stephan has a reflection in a mirror he explains, blah, blah, blah "You are my mirror.' Very cool sentence. One! Very cool sentence.
So now you know the positive, here is the not so positive.
Here is the rest. Remember the scene in the first series where THE BLOND goes all self pity and turns to Matt in a drunken stupor telling him that she is as shallow as a fish pond. Well if she is as shallow as a fish pond then Elena, in the books is as shallow as goldfish bowl, those small, inhuman ones, the ones you can fill with the same amount of water as you would fill a cup of coffee with. Bonnie is portrayed as dumb. It really gets on my nerves; she has a sister, woo hoo. Bonnie is about as flat as a piece of post it. Her sister, seriously, I know why she is an only child in the series. Now here is the one thing that gets on my nerves almost as much as Elena and her shallow goldfish mentality. I do not get this. So we have Elena, in her single minded pursuit of Stephan. She wanted him, without knowing him, she got him. So here is a question, when does want turn to a love that conquers all? I have no idea, do you?
I gave book one a four star review. I am now onto an epic question, does writing the worse possible characters in history as the hero's and heroins constitute a bad book? Oh yes. I give this a two star review. One star for every good, positive point. Stay clear. On an island with only this book, use it to start a fire.

She is endeavoring to derail a plot to frame and persecute Stefan for murder at the same time that she is trying to protect her friends and family from Damon’s deadly obsession with her. Putting the safety of those around her above her own is the dominant theme in Elena’s struggle, and it is that very trait that pulls her deeper and deeper into trouble. The pacing in this book is different from the first, without the foreshadowing that I loved so much in the first book. Instead, unexpected and vividly disturbing events draw the reader forward. It is also in this book that the protective bond between Elena and her friends is strengthened:

"I should go out there, Elena thought. It’s me he wants, not them. He said as much. I should go out there and face him, and maybe he’ll let Bonnie and Meredith leave. But the fiery rage that had sustained her that morning was in ashes now. With all her strength of will, she could not make her hand let go of Bonnie’s, could not tear herself away."

The Struggle does not let down after The Awakening. It plunges Elena deeper into the horror, forcing her to use her independent mind and courage to go it alone. She is also starting to face the opposing desires within her that rise to the surface as she battles Damon, the one she can least afford to reveal conflict and vulnerability to. Damon can harm her, but Elena herself may prove just as powerful in her own undoing.(less)

Yep, I just finished this book about 30 minutes ago. I started reading this after I finished the first one last night. It was probably around 2am. These books are so action packed. Not to mention that usually books who have sequels leave you hanging on the end BUT these books... that's an understatement. The end of the first book left you hanging mid-sentence. But she has they loyalty of her friends Meredith, Bonnie, and Matt. Also someone has stolen Elena's diary and plans to use it against her on Founder's Day and humiliate her and get Stefan killed or driven out of town. I'll leave it at that. I won't give away the ending. But the climax of the story was great and the book is well-written. A good series so far. These vampires have special powers of the shadows and the dark. If they feed on humans and grow in power they can transform into animals and they can manipulate the weather. I recommend this series for ages 14 and up. It's young adult literature. I grew up on LJ Smith and though this is a good series, she has better. In terms of general environment, the books are definitely spookier and more atmospheric than their TV counterpart. In terms of actual plot, I would honestly just recommend the TV show. I don't think I've EVER said that before in a review, but it is true in this case. Elena tak menyangka kalau Caroline dan Tyler lah yang berada di balik semua itu, mereka bersekutu untuk menghancurkan Elena dan mengusir Stefan keluar dari Fell’s Church pada acara Founders Day. Saya jauh menikmati novel kedua ini dibandingkan yang pertama, mungkin karena di novel ini cerita mulai kompleks, tak seperti novel pertama yang “begitu doang”. Karakter Damon yang bad boy dan mencuri perhatian juga membuat novel ini semakin seru untuk dibaca. Walau begitu, entah kenapa saya masih merasakan kekakuan pada terjemahan novel ini, padahal penerjemah sudah berganti. Kata-kata yang digunakan masih terlalu baku, bukankah novel ini ditujukan untuk remaja? Sedikit saran, kata “kamu” bisa diganti “kau”. Mudah-mudahan lebih diperhatikan untuk novel selanjutnya. Dan terus terang masih ada 1 pertanyaan yang ada di otak saya, kenapa yah Damon lebih disukai oleh para wanita dibandingkan Stefan?

This series is definitely intended for young kids, evident from the lack of creativity in the writing (How many times does Elena say, "I want to kill him!" "I'm just going to die!"? There ARE more ways to say that without repeating the same two verbs.) I finished the second story in the series, "The Struggle" yesterday but didn't have a chance to record any thoughts. I'm not quite sure how to go about doing so without giving spoilers to readers who plan to read the books but haven't read them yet. That said, if you dislike spoilers this is a review to skip.

I can see why these stories would appeal to young adult readers, and high school girls in particular, who are able to consider meeting the man they will spend their life with in high school...more

I gave the first book in this series, The Awakening, 2 stars, but The Struggle is 2 and a half. The half comes simply from the surprise ending.

This book was just as plodding as it's predecessor, but had a little more action in the plot. I still have pain in my face from all the grimacing and eye-rolling (as the characters made stupid, immature decisions, relentlessly). But the twist at the end was actually really good...I wish there had been a story worthy of it in the first 7/8 of the book.

The second book picks up where The Awakening left off, and delves further into Damon's attempts to win Elena's affections and Stefan's struggle to survive. One word to describe this book: EPIC. A HUGE improvement on The Awakening, because it deals with Damon increasing his reign over Fell's Church and over Elena's life. He's creepy as hell, totally dangerous, and really kept me reading on. I wasnt sure how I felt about Damon at the end of the first book, but now I'm hooked.

The Struggle is a book about a girl who finds out a big secret about Stefan.

While "The Struggle" was better than "The Awakening" it still fell victim to many of the same faults. Very little happens in the book, Elena is still dumb, and she falls in love to easily. In "The Awakening" she fell in love with Stefan immediately. In "The Struggle" Damon was horrible to Elena at every turn, but when he comes near her, she swoons. It's just lazy writing.
