Flukes
by
Nichole Chase (Goodreads Author)
Meena has a secret guarded closely by her family—a secret as dangerous as the sea and buried just as deep. When court-appointed community-service workers are assigned to Flukes, the family-owned animal sanctuary, everyone is on high alert. It doesn’t help that Meena finds herself attracted to sexy-as-sin Blake Weathering, one of the new workers. If he wasn’t so distracting...more

[...] 'it's the truth.' I glared at him. 'You wanted to kiss me just as much as I wanted to kiss you.' His eyes dropped back to my mouth and I felt the fire in my stomach rekindle. 'That's not the point.' My words were breathless and I frowned, realizing that I had agreed to what he said. Half a conversation later he hopped onto the bottom rung of the ladder so he was pressed against my back. [...] His long, hard body pressed against mine was giving me ideas I didn't need.

Nichole Chase proves once more that she is a master story teller with an eye for the visual, an ear for the characters and a hand for molding magic.
Flukes is just delightful - a blend of smart, modern story telling infused with classic mythology that becomes fresh and full of life right off the page. Her key characters in Meena and Blake are such an attractive couple and their growth through the story arc so convincing, I came away from the story feeling as though I'd made new friends.

THIS IS A NEW ADULT NOVEL AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. SOME CONTENT MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR YOUNG READERS.
Nichole Chase has done it again. She captured my heart with her Dark Betrayal Trilogy. I am Team Roland all the way and I did not think I could fall in love with another of her characters and boy oh boy was I wrong. Blake is my dream man. He is the bad boy persona but at the end of the day he is the sweetest guy you could ever ask for.

Meena was found by her parents next to her dead mother in the water next to their island home. Her parents ran a marine animal sanctuary and adopted her (and the protective dolphin) and kept her identity secret for her whole life. Meena had one friend who knew her story and unfortunately she was going away to college -- Meena was trying to put up a strong front so her friend wouldn't feel bad about leaving but when you are a mermaid ... only so many people can know your story.

Review:
I have to say that when I read the Dark Betrayal trilogy by Nichole Chase, I knew she'd pop out a novel that was a more R rated than her young adult books. She has a fantastic way of making you feel emotions and those hot and sexy ones are no exception. Remember Ree and Paden's kitchen scene? Yeah, well, just wait until you get to Meena and Blake's beach scene. Holy hot!

OMGOMGOMG!! When I cover revealed the cover few months ago I knew I wanted to read this book. I love mermaid books, animals and cute romance. Did it match my expectations? Read on and find out.
Meena, to me felt somewhat like a cute little princess. She was curious, sweet, and naive. I pictured her as an older version of Numa no Himemiko. I mean sure the cover of the book probably is Meena but I like to picture my own characters :P (You will see more on that when you read Blake).

I'm starting to think that I am really a NEWBIE in the blogging/book world. Why? Because I haven't heard of Nichole Chase, well, not until I sign-up for the cover reveal of FLUKES, saw the cover **swoon** . Cover Unveiled: Flukes by Nichole Chase .I even remember commenting on the cover:

Flukes is a new adult mermaid romance. Check, check, check! Everything about that sentence makes me excited about Flukes. I thought this was a perfect romance. It was sweet, there was plenty of chemistry and there was mermaid lore surrounding it all. I was immediately drawn into the world at the sanctuary animal cove. I loved the idea of two animal lovers/scientists finding and raising Meena. This book kind of reminded me of Emerald Isle by Kate Hinderer, which I totally loved. But Emerald Isle...more
I love mermaids and dolphins and the story that Nicole wrote was a fantastic fantasy. From the get go, I was hooked! I felt for Meena's parents right away. Meena is fantastic, she is smart, sheltered and a little lonely and confused about things in her life. She really only has her parents, her best friend Vi and her dolphin friends. Meena has a wonderful understanding of the animals they shelter, she is able to help them like no one else can, a pretty awesome talent. Then you have Blake, he is...more
To be honest, I didn't know this was a mermaid book until I read a review on Goodreads. Call me stupid but I really didn't get that from the summary or the cover. I know.
I feel like this is a bit like Twilight. Especially the romance. I thought it was too fast, only knew each other a few weeks and then now they're like confessing their 'true love' to each other. YUCK. And since this is more NA than YA, a few scenes are quite graphic and a little 'more' than typical YA romantic scenes. Just warn...more

Aww, this was a pretty cute story! I've never read a mermaid romance before, but I liked it. I love the setting (a marine mammal sanctuary), the relationship Meena has with her parents and her best friend. I love the rules and traditions that are slowly revealed regarding mermaid culture. I love the attention to detail regarding dolphin behavior, too. I read this book so fast, b/c I couldn't put it down. Especially when the sexual tension escalated between Meena and Blake. I love Mermaids!!! What's cool and different about this mermaid tale (not tail, lol) is that she is found when she is just a baby. Marion and Ben had suffered after the miscarraige for their first child. They wanted desperately to have a child. As the couple is out in the boat assessing damage to the shoreline from a hurricane they come across something tangled in a fishing net. They help release a dolphine and discover more than their scientfic minds were prepared for. A female mermaid is also tr...more

PNR and paranormal YA fans, fans of Shelly Crane's Significance series
THIS IS A MUST-READ FOR PNR AND YA FANS!!!!!!!! Wow, wow, wow, did this book ever sneak up and bite me on the tail fin!!! I am not usually a fan of mermaid stories, but this book officially breaks the mold. When I saw the NA warning in the blurb of a mermaid story, it immediately peaked my interest since I'm all about the PNR these days. Little did I know that Nichole Chase had done something that few authors dared to do; to bridge the noticeable gap between the YA reads we love so much but some...more
Thank you to Erin for recommending this to me. I never would have tried it if she did, as I've never read anything about mermaids. Well now I'm on the hunt for more mermaid books.
This is the type of book that lately I've been loving; young adult but with a supernatural twist and it's set in the carribean, which is awesome to read about at this cold time of the year.

Dolphins, mermaids and romance…what else could you ask for. I really liked this book and the characters in it. With the prologue you felt for Meena’s parents and what they were going through. Meena’s character is awesome – she’s fierce, independent, witty and sticks up for what’s she believes in, basically everything that has to do with Flukes. Blake is a spoiled rich kid that gets a kick in the butt to change his way of thinking when he meets Meena. I really liked the back and forth between the...more
I have read all of Nicole Chase's books and enjoyed them. When I saw that she was coming out with a Mermaid book, I admit I was curious. (I am not much of a Mermaid reader.) But I am really glad I got it and read it. The story line was pretty unique. The flow of the beginning, body and ending was flawless. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely read a sequel!

Dang it I waited too long to give this a proper review. I really liked it, although I was hoping for more of an underwater world. I didn't really like that mermaids lived on land and just jumped in the water for a swim every day. I was hoping to find another whole world. But it was still a fun book. It was a cute love story. It made me want to read another mermaid book.

5 Magical Stars!

I need to start off by saying this was my first novel about a mermaid, so I have nothing to compare it to.
But right off the bat, I'll say, I loved this!
I loved the setting. It took place in the Bahamas, and I loved being on the island and experiencing the beach and oceanic animals. It was a wonderful escape from the dreary midwest.

I haven't really read any self published books in awhile..not because I haven't wanted too but I just haven't seen any ones that sparked my interest. I happened across Flukes on Amazon a couple of weeks ago and I decided to give it a shot. Overall, I was surprised on how much I enjoyed Flukes.

I love this book! Flukes was exactly what I wanted it to be: cute, sweet, interesting, MERMAIDS, and a bit of romance. But most importantly, I kind of wanted something that was just a little fun and not that over the top with drama or intensity. Flukes fits that perfectly. If you are looking for a crazy, insane, intense, emotional whirlwind, this book probably isn't for you. But if you want something fun, cute, and sweet, Flukes is the perfect book!

Meena and Blake meet when Blake is sentenced to community service at her family's animal center, Flukes. There's attraction at first sight, but Blake also antagonizes Meena by badmouthing the center, even before a complete introduction can be made. Even with all of the sparks flying between them, Meena can't let her guard down with Blake because of her secret.

I was very excited to read this book. I have been trying out a lot of New Adult books lately and I love mermaid books so I gave this one a try. I loved the book. It was a wonderfully entertaining, romantic, fun read. It was a bit gushy at times, and yes the romance is hard and fast, but hey I live in a fantasy world.

I was emotionally invested from the beginning. I really connected to Meena's parents and could feel my heart ache for them at first. I was so so happy when they found Meena. I felt like it gave them a purpose.

So I really enjoyed this book but I did feel like it was rushed especially at the end. I did like Meena and Blake's interactions and I thought they were adorable. I do wish there had been a little more expanded on the mermaids though like the whole clan thing. I know the cousins talked a bit about it but I didn't really feel like I got to experience what a mermaid clan was like. I thought this book was really good but I felt like it ended too quickly which is why I give it 3 stars instead of 4....more
This was the first mermaid book that I have read, and I am so happy I did!! It was amazing!!
Meena, to me, was perfect. She's shy, because of the secret she carries, and Blake is perfect for her! At first, she is cautious of Blake, knowing that if she gets too close, she'll get hurt. He's leaving, and she doesn't want to get involved just to have to say goodbye.
Blake, on the other hand, is a little more determined to get to know her. They are forced together by her father, who is looking for new...more

When Nichole said she was sending me an ARC I was beside myself. I was super excited to dive in and discover this amazing world Nichole had created. I was expecting a cute read about mermaids and what I got was cute...for a time. Then it got steamy and then it got hot...really hot! Definitely not a YA read. But of gracious me was it good. Like really good.

I'm sitting here reviewing my notes and I'm getting overheated again! Now it's no surprise that I like me some steam and I've seen hints of Nichole's swoon abilities in her other books, but WOW! Not only did she create a delicious story, but she created characters that I fell in love with.

Flukes was the first book I ever read about mermaids -- well, merpeople in general, not to discriminate. I discovered author Nichole Chase through a young lady who used to work for me in my past lifetime working at a bookstore. She got me hooked on Chase's Dark Betrayal trilogy and I've been following Chase ever since. I admit that when I first heard what Flukes was about, I wrote off the book, thinking I had no interest in mermaids. But for some reason I just kept coming back to it and decided...more
