Those who need simple reading material while traveling
Easy read of a medical thriller set primarily in South America and Hawaii, Plague was fairly straightforward and simple to follow, with no random side stories or confusing relationship issues to sort out. The author writes well, in a clear "just the facts" style that is a nice change from many of the current crop of writers.

I seem to really be enjoying medical thrillers at the moment; this book was a real page turner. Unlike most other medical thrillers I have read, it got going very quickly, with intriguing characters and a gripping plot from the first chapter.
The writer is very skilled in his craft. He chose vocabulary that was easy to read, enabling you to speed through the pages, but without being overly simplistic, which would have made me enjoy the book less. The threat itself was described in a way that mad...more

I picked this up for free on my kindle as the title interested me, and well, it was free. To be honest I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, I mean if the book is being given away for nothing its best not to have high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Methos has a masterful way of building suspense and I found the themes explored in the book to be really interesting. I love a good disaster story, but only if its done right and constructed in a believable way. And this was. I found...more

I found the story started off strong - a tour guide in Peru falls prey to an unknown pathogen and then through the human interaction of modern society it reaches the United States (Hawaii).
After the epidemic starts however things start getting a bit average and predictable, then the author starts mentioning God at random intervals and one point stating that humans naturally would all rape and kill without God. (Never mind the millions of people throughout history killed and/or tortured in the n...more

I enjoyed the suspense and my attention was definitely glued to the novel. It was hard to put down for the most part. However, the ending felt rushed and incomplete, leaving me wondering if the virus was actually contained and wanting more details about how it was released.
I disliked the author's portrayal of Amazonian Indians as violent and sexist. Also, the tendency of the author to start talking about God at odd times really annoyed me. It kept mentioning that without God, we would be rioting...more

Predictable and flat. I was drawn in by an interesting premise (I have always been interested in epidemiology), but disappointed by a predictable plot, clunky writing that veered from overly specific product placement, use of medical terminology without any possible explanation for the layman reader, glaring plot holes and a large, two-dimensional cast. I don't mind authors using medical terms if they provide context or explanation, but throwing out there in a lame attempt to add veracity to the...more
I think this is a very well written account of a epidemic event. I'd have given it 5-stars if it wasn't for an ending that truly sucked. Do I recommend this book to others? Sure. But be ready for an ending that just doesn't sew up the main plotline of the book, only the subplot.
Despite this flaw, a fatal one in many books, Plague still has a lot to recommend it. I really liked the way that Methos draws his characters and his descriptions of events comes across as quite vivid and plausible. Even...more

For me, Victor Methos' novel, Plague (A Medical Thriller) plodded along until I thought that I would have to abandon further reading. However, I like to complete things, so I stuck with it through endless scenes of black bile spewing across the pages and dark patches of blood surfacing under the skin of victims of the plague. This novel was not novel, nor did it always have its facts straight which soured its believability for me. However, there is some intrigue which was satisfying although it...more
I have no idea how I stumbled across this book (I suspect it was loaded after I lent a friend my kindle) but I thought I would give it a go last night - and now several hours later I have finished it - and really enjoyed it - sometimes I think you have to read something out of your comfort zone - and this was certainly it - dont think I can remember the last time I read a medical thriller but I am glad I did. The characters are easy to connect with and like, the storyline plausible without sensa...more
the plot was intriguing, the writing was good, and I liked the main characters. I enjoyed the first two thirds of the book, but when it came time for the climax where everything should have been explained and resolved, it started feeling rushed and incomplete. Part of the ending referred to something that was supposed to have happened in the beginning which was not included in the book (at least I don't remember it) and would have helped support how the story was concluding. this apparently is t...more
For $2.99 this book isn't bad and it's never boring. The plot of the story is a tour guide returning from Peru brings back a horrific disease that infects almost all of Honolulu. Dr. Anna Bower of the CDC races to stop the plague from spreading.
The set up of the book is fine, although the plot is similar to the movie outbreak. Somewhere about halfway through the book falls apart and the plot goes into a bizarre direction. I would have given it 3 stars but the ending was so bad and ties up nothin...more

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and struggled to put it down. There was so much suspense that I didn't want to stop until I was finished reading it.
The ending did seem to be rushed and kind of left me wondering, what happens next? Was the virus contained or is it still infecting people in South America, Hawaii, or even the United States? However, it was something that made me think about life and how quickly it can change. How one outbreak can spread like wildfire.

Plague is an excellent book. A deadly disease has infected people in a tour group and now it has been spread to an island. Specialist Doctors are trying to figure out what it is and how to beat it. They realize that there is no hope for the infected; everyone who is infected dies. This is a story of country loyalty, illness, death, hope, and love. If you read it I hope you enjoy it.

I gave this two stars because in general I found it well written and completely absorbing. I couldn't put it down. However, as a medical mystery, I found the how and why a bit incomprehensible. The book really pushed the idea that people will do evil with the right set of circumstances. That each of these circumstances are different for everyone. I don't know there was a bit about it that just fell a bit flat.
This book is written like a Syfy Channel Saturday night movie. If those appeal to you, you will love this. For me it was too much hopping around and introducing random elements. Works for a movie, because visuals tell us a lot more. Characters were a bit thin at the start, so that may have added to the feeling of lack of continuity. Once it got gooey, I bailed.
What if...
What if one man's exposure to a communicable disease exposed the whole world? How would you stop it from spreading. Complete madness! This book was extremely thought provoking. I liked it. It was just insane enough to keep me flipping through the pages.
By madness and insane, I don't mean unrealistic. I mean a very creative, well-written story.

Usually the only thriller or horror movies I like are medically based. This book drew me in from the very beginning and kept my attention even though there were a lot of characters. As is the nature of the story, most characters weren't around long so it wasn't too difficult to keep track of the characters that stayed. I'll be keeping an eye out for the sequel!
Overall, This was pretty good and quick read.
I think that it was a bit improbable in places but I still think that if you want to read something like this you should try this one The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story
